The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. Interesting skies this morning, I think hazy is probably the best way to describe them. But it's bright and the sun is out. Temps once again going to head up to 15C and perhaps over, and a similar story for tomorrow too. There is some rain forecast later on Sunday and into early week. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Pre-weekend update It hasn't been so warm here today even with the sun out. It has been windy though. Tomorrow will also be sunny but warmer and less windy. Should be a fine day actually, though skiable area is getting less now with lots of patches showing through down to Paraside now. Cover on Uenotaira and Yamabiko - while relatively thin - is still good and the resort are putting a lot of effort into trying to keep things going smoothly. There's still fun to be had out there. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 25cm Snowfall at base this season 400cm Posted on Wednesday 5th February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Ah, yes... now this is more like it! I am very happy to be able to report lots of fresh snow down here in the village area and just hearing the numbers from the resort: Yamabiko - 35cm Uenotaira - ?cm Hikage - 30cm Nagasaka - 30cm Karasawa - 20cm So up to 35cm of fresh snow on the upper slopes this morning, with Uenotaira area yet to report. (I suspect they may well report more). I haven't been hearing of any reports of lift or course closings early this morning, but care will be needed with these quickly changing conditions. It is suitably cold (minus 7 degrees here at base and a very cold indeed minus 14 degrees up top),but has also been very windy overnight. The wind has calmed down a lot though now and actually (and unfortunately) the snow has been easing off - down here anyway - and even some clouds breaking up showing a bit of sky in places. I'm looking at a few forecasts here now and they are saying different things... cloud for the day, snow showers for the day. Looks like overnight was the peak of what we are getting this time anyway. Saturday onwards into next week is looking to be rather snowy as well, so things are looking up. Hopefully that mild dry spell is behind us! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 375cm Posted on Tuesday 4th February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Morning from Nozawa. I'm happy to report that after another mild day - it was a balmy 6 degrees as the resort closed yesterday - temperatures have been dropping since late last night and it is going to be a much colder day today, currently -3 degrees at base. There has also been some snowfall, albeit very limited. The resort is reporting 5cm on Uenotaira, and 1cm on the other areas of the mountain. Snow showers are reported for the day and just now it's actually a bit sunny down here in the village. Upper areas of the mountain are covered in cloud though and as of a short while ago it was snowing lightly up there. Not quite the huge dump of snow we are looking for, but definitely an improvement. We are keeping hopeful for the chance of decent snow overnight tonight and while late on tomorrow and Thursday are forecast to be mostly dry, snow is due over the weekend. Potential. Come on, bring it on! Let's see what I can report tomorrow morning. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 405cm Posted on Thursday 6th February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Uenotaira pulled through later in the morning yesterday - they must have been moving tons of snow as they ended up reporting 50cm of fresh snow with the snow depth up there jumping up to 235cm. Impressive. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get up there to sample, but I heard brave stories of happiness at being able to play in the new snow. It didn't clear up in the end yesterday and was snowing for most of the time. This morning it is still snowing lightly and the resort is reporting 8cm of fresh snow on the Nagasaka and Hikage areas, 10cm on Uenotaira and 15cm up at Yamabiko. Keeping cold and as of 9am about -6 degrees here in the village area, with a low temperature of -13 degrees on the mountain. It should be snow showers for the day today with a break from snowfall tomorrow (just cloud?)...... and some potentially heavy snowfall again coming over the weekend. Yokatta, great to see winter return. I am going to get up there today to sample the new snow. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Yesterday was another really good day out on the mountain and some fine stashes of snow to be found. It's another cold morning here with a temperature of -10 degrees on the top area of the mountain, around -5C at base. The resort is reporting 10-20cm of fresh snow on the (lower-upper) slopes and there was a corresponding nice layer of snow to brush off the car this morning. While it is still snowing, it's forecast to ease off and just be cloudy for most of the day today (perhaps a chance of some sun later too?), but it will remain cold. Snow is forecast for tomorrow and probably into Sunday as well. So if you are here for the weekend come prepared for snow and cold conditions. A week can make a big difference. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . I was hoping to bring news of decent numbers this morning, but it's just 5cm or so on most of the mountain with the Karasawa are reporting a lonely 0cm. That is at 7:30am for the top slopes and 8am for the lower slopes. But, we need to give it a chance as it only started early morning - it is snowing and it's from now that it will build up so there will already be more out there than those numbers imply. The snow is coming down, visibility is limited and everything looks the same colour up top in particular, it's cold. Yes, a good winters day in Nozawa. Hopefully conditions will be good out there and continue to be with snowfall forecast for the day and hopefully tomorrow too. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 40cm Snowfall at base this season 496cm Posted on Sunday 16th February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Snow, snow and lots more snow. Not sure that we were all expecting quite as much as this, perhaps just hoping. But the heavy snowfall has continued and here's what we have had since my report yesterday. This all official numbers coming from the resort: Yesterday as of 3pm... Yamabiko - 45cm Uenotaira - 50cm Hikage - 40cm Nagasaka - 38cm Karasawa - 30cm And this morning... Yamabiko - 30cm Uenotaira - 25cm Hikage - 0cm (?) Nagasaka - 20cm Karasawa - 0cm (?) I add those up and come to a Nozawatastic total of... Yamabiko - 75cm Uenotaira - 75cm Hikage - 40cm Nagasaka - 58cm Karasawa - 30cm ...since yesterday morning. The official snow depths have all taken a big jump. Those are big numbers and exciting to look at but do bring on their own set of problems. One of the most important ones being dangers of avalanche. Probably best to stick to the courses - there's tons of fresh snow to play in. Venturing outside invites risk. Yesterday, I mentioned that Skyline was closed. It did open, though during the day Rinkan, Kamoshika and Tanuki closed no doube due to dangers and the resort made the call. They remain closed today it seems. This morning the snow continues to fall. The forecast says that later on in the day today it might ease up and we will end the day with just cloud but there's a decent chance of more snow tomorrow. Transportation issues (non running Shinkansen and closed Expressways) due to the unexpected snow mainly in the Kanto regions stopped people from getting to Nozawa yesterday and issues remain today. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . I am the bearer of good news this morning. New snow. Nice powdery snow. Oh yes. Yamabiko - 20cm Uenotaira - 25cm Hikage - 30cm Nagasaka - 35cm Karasawa - 25cm So today, most snowfall on... Nagasaka?! Interesting. But bottom line is there's a good wad of new light fresh snow over all the mountain as we feel like we are back to winter again. Although it's strangely mild and just about keeping in the negatives for now. We are being told of the chance of the snow being sleet later on down here at base, but I hope we avoid that. Just a few less exciting things to report. First of all it looks like early on the popular Skyline course is closed, as well as the Kamoshika course. I don't have any details on that or whether they will open later on in the day. The other is that this weekend again heavy snow is falling in places where it often doesn't - down to the south including the Tokyo area. There seems to be widespread disruption to traffic with roads closed and trains cancelled. This will mean less people getting here, which while sad for those people it means less crowds for those who are here. Should be a top day today. Enjoy. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 501cm Posted on Monday 17th February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . After that somewhat wild weekend, things have calmed down somewhat now. Cloudy with light snow early this morning and generally just cloudy conditions and sometimes snow forecast for today and just cloudy tomorrow. Perhaps even a bit of sun. Yesterday during the day there was another 5cm or so of snow over the mountain and this morning Nozawa is reporting up to 10cm on the upper slopes, with none down at base. It's about 0 degrees at the moment, with -7 degrees posted for the top Yamabiko area. Visibility limited on the upper areas this morning at the moment. The Kamoshika and Tanuki runs coming off Skyline still seem to be remaining closed for the moment. So, with a relatively quiet Sunday because of people not actually being able to get here and all that snow, there is still a lot of untouched out there on the courses of the resort. Those trees might look very tempting, but real care needed. It should be a fine morning for anyone getting up there today. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . More snow in Nozawa. Yes, the last run of days since late last week has really felt more like a 'normal' Nozawa with the consistent snowfall. We're even getting the 'too much snow' comments from some people - always a good sign! Since yesterday the Yamabiko area has reported 25cm; Uenotaira 35cm; Hikage 5cm; Nagasaka 30cm; Hikage 25cm; Kawasawa 20cm. Whatever the numbers, there's more fresh out there this morning and it is continuing to snow this morning. If the forecasts are to be believed, snow should dry up during today and tomorrow should be a cloudy day; perhaps even clear and sunny. Roads around Nozawa are ok but there are still some roads that people use to get here not open - still! - and warnings of more snow for Tokyo before the weekend. Hopefully that will not affect peoples plans like it has done since last weekend. For those able to be here.... great conditions to be found. Hope you can get to enjoy it. Of course, those people aren't used to the snow and causes all sorts of problems. Take care out there on the roads! On the other hand, of course, we always want that snow where we are here in Nozawa. Yesterday it was snowing all day and we got up to another 20cm or so on all but the base areas of the mountain, and this morning there's another 10cm being reported on Yamabiko and 5cm on Uenotaira areas. Conditions up there today should be great once again. People on the first lifts in particular in for a treat. The snow has eased off since last night and it's just a cloudy morning. Fog being reported on the top area. It's around -3 degrees at the moment here in the village. Perhaps more snow overnight tonight, then it looks like the coming week might be somewhat drier and clearer. But hopefully keep cold. Should be a good day.
