  • Yuzawa Now: Thursday 26th February 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 883cm Posted on Thursday 26th February 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday I didn't venture outside much until the evening and don't know what we going on weather-wise. Perhaps a good idea, but at least it wasn't raining by then. This morning we have one of those clear and beautiful blue sky morning. The mountains are looking really beautiful. The snow is feeling... spring. I think the best comment regarding our snow is that conditions are generally better the higher up you go. There is some snow on the two week forecasts in places, though just how much we actually might get remains to be seen. If we don't get much, though, and the mild/warm conditions continue, we have to prepare ourselves for the possibility that some ski areas might not be able to remain open as long as they originally planned. Hopefully we won't get there and March might still deliver some surprises. Sometimes when you get a run of warmth and lack of snow, you start thinking things...! My mind can't help but remember the mad snowfall that we enjoyed last February. It's quite the contrast with this year. Still, spring-like conditions can be a whole lot of fun. A different mindset is perhaps required. Let's try to enjoy what we have while we still have it! Tomorrow should at least start off fine again. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. After that completely clear start to the morning yesterday, today we start with more cloud around. Forecasts generally predict a fair chance of some sun this morning, with mostly cloudy conditions from late morning. There's a cool looking sea of cloud over the Minamiuonuma valley (see image below). Weekend weather? Tomorrow we will probably get rained on in town, and might be lucky to get some snow at higher elevations. Sunday should see a return to sunny skies. Beyond that, there is a chance we get snow in town around Tuesday/Wednesday next week. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We did end up with some nice weather yesterday morning with some blue sky and sun for a while before clouding over by afternoon. It's the weekend again and not a very nice start weather wise. Light rain and some limited visibility in places. It's expected for the day. Looks like the Tashiro Area of Kagura will be closed today due to strong winds forecast, and Kagura open up to Number 1 pair lift. Also, only the lower areas of Naeba are open, again due to forecast wind. Tomorrow (and Monday) should be much nicer! Future possible snowfall update: I'm still pleased to see some possible snow on the radar. It may not be 'full on', but any precious fresh layers would be great and very welcome. For now, on we go! • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 1st March 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 883cm Posted on Sunday 1st March 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. I, for one, am rather pleased that yesterday is over and we can try to start again in this new month. It was pretty miserable weather yesterday, not that I ventured outside much. (I wonder if any higher areas might have had some kind of snow since yesterday, but no ski areas are reporting anything). This morning we have a mix of cloud and blue sky and forecasts seem to indicate that the sun might win the day and we should get clearer skies. There is already a bit of sun in places. Clearer weather due tomorrow too. The Prince Number 1 gondola and Takenokoyama lifts are not operating at Naeba due to avalanche risk. I was looking back at snowfall stats from previous seasons. Our snowfall for the season currently is at 883cm and I was quite surprised at how big that number seemed. It doesn't feel as though there has been as much as that this season. It just goes to show how it's not just how much snow falls, but it's when it falls and a whole lot of other conditions (temps, rain, wind, etc). One thing is for sure and that is after the wonderful 549cm of snowfall last February, February 2026 wasn't very snowy - particularly the second half. Only 19cm of snowfall has been observed since 14th February; that's really poor. The total for the month was just 132cm and that is one of the lowest showings for February since our records began in 2012. So here we are in March, a month that is traditionally unpredictable. The Yuzawa Now reported snowfall numbers for the month of March have varied from 9cm to 191cm. (191cm sounds great!) There are still signs of some snow on forecasts from around 8th March and maybe some light stuff at higher elevations before then. It remains to be seen if it might be enough to make any difference to the big picture. After all that, it's important to point out that there's still a lot of fun to be had - spring skiing can be fun. It's just... we still want to hold on to winter skiing! Generally, as you might expect, better snow conditions found the higher up you go. --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 190cm Notes: The Northern Area connection with Ishiuchi Maruyama and the Southern Area (Ropeway) connection with Yuzawa Kogen are both open Special night skiing is planned for 14th, 21st, 28th March and 4th April ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 170cm Notes: The top connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th February and then Fridays and Saturdays until 28th March (until 8:00pm) ----------------------- Iwappara Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 135cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th March (until 7:00pm on weekdays and Sundays, until 8:00pm on Saturdays and nights before holidays) ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 170cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 22nd March (until 9:00pm) The Atema and Osawa base car parks (and associated runs) are scheduled to be open on weekends only ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 300cm Base: 220cm Notes: Both Ropeway bases open as normal ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 160cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays until 28th March (until 2:00am the next morning) ---------------------------- Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 215cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Saturdays and Sundays until 14th March (until 8:00pm on Saturdays and 7:00pm on Sundays) ---------------------------- Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 280cm Base: 150cm ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 220cm Base: 170cm Notes: Tanenokoyama pair lift and Prince Number 1 gondola not operating due to avalanche danger Daily floodlit night skiing until 21st March (until 8:30pm) ---------------------------- NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 150cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 180cm Base: 90cm Notes: The upper Kogen area and base area are both open The Ropeway connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open ---------------------------- Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 160cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 120cm Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Sunday 1st March 2026 Total snowfall at base so far 883cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 46 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 68cm (on 25th January) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days January 2026 snowfall 595cm reported on 23 days February 2026 snowfall 132cm reported on 13 days March 2026 snowfall 0cm Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Thursday 5th March 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 8cm Snowfall at base this seas 891cm Posted on Thursday 5th March 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. After the rain turning into snow last night, we have some fresh snow cm this morning! I've done my best, but after spending over 30 minutes trying, I cannot find one ski area that is telling us how much fresh snow they have received since yesterday. Why is that information not seen as important? Drives me nuts! (The latest social media post by Naeba ski area is about their 'strawberry fair' event a few days ago). Are these operations not ski areas, appealing to folks who get excited about skiing and snowboarding on fresh snow? Mini rant over, the only fresh snowfall number I have to report is my own. 8cm in town, and less to the north in Minamiuonuma (2-3cm at SJHQ). The Japan Meteorological Agency is also showing 7cm at their measuring point in Yuzawa. Perhaps 10+cm in higher elevations? Good to see snow on some trees and that fresh white look again. More over the weekend and early next week? (A handful of cm is welcome any day, but what we could really do with is a 20+cm layer. Obviously). Kagura is still struggling with wind today - the Tashiro Area will be closed again today with Kagura open up to the Kagura gondola (via Mitsumata). They are not reporting any fresh snowfall numbers. • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 7th March 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this seas 892cm Posted on Saturday 7th March 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. It did end up being quite windy yesterday. I was woken up by the sound of rain early this morning, but thankfully it has now turned into snow. Just a dusting so far down in town, but there is some snow on trees and I feel justified in representing that with 1cm added to this report. Currently just under 1C. There has been at least a few cm of fresh snow as you go a bit higher. We can see a covering of snow on the Gala webcams (see below), 5-10cm perhaps, and Kagura is actually reporting 10cm of fresh snow this morning. We are told to expect some kind of mix of sleet/snow for much of today, and snow overnight into tomorrow. Come on!!! Some lower town-level slopes have been getting increasingly 'patchy' looking with some ground starting to show, so a fresh covering would be most welcome. I will of course let you know what we end up with tomorrow morning. (There are some lift restrictions again at Kagura this morning due to wind, with the Kagura Tashiro connecting course closed; but both Ropeway bases are open). --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 190cm Notes: Special night skiing is planned for 14th, 21st, 28th March and 4th April ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 150cm Notes: The top connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open Floodlit night skiing on Fridays and Saturdays until 28th March (until 8:00pm) ----------------------- Iwappara Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 120cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th March (until 7:00pm on weekdays and Sundays, until 8:00pm on Saturdays and nights before holidays) ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 150cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 22nd March (until 9:00pm) The Atema and Osawa base car parks (and associated runs) are scheduled to be open on weekends only ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 300cm Base: 220cm ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 155cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays until 28th March (until 2:00am the next morning) ---------------------------- Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 215cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Saturdays and Sundays until 14th March (until 8:00pm on Saturdays and 7:00pm on Sundays) ---------------------------- Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 270cm Base: 130cm ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 190cm Base: 130cm Notes: Tanenokoyama pair lift and Prince Number 1 gondola not operating due to avalanche danger Daily floodlit night skiing until 21st March (until 8:30pm) ---------------------------- NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 140cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 180cm Base: 90cm Notes: The upper Kogen area and base area are both open The Ropeway connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open ---------------------------- Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 150cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 110cm Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Saturday 7th March 2026 Total snowfall at base so far 892cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 48 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 68cm (on 25th January) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days January 2026 snowfall 595cm reported on 23 days February 2026 snowfall 132cm reported on 13 days March 2026 snowfall 9cm reported on 2 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 8th March 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 11cm Snowfall at base this seas 903cm Posted on Sunday 8th March 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. And a good morning it is, with a nice fresh coating of white. At SJHQ to the north of Yuzawa there is 6cm of snow on the top of cars. There's 11cm at our measuring point in Yuzawa. It is still snowing and limited poor visibility in higher areas. Higher areas will very probably have received more snow than that, so there should be some fun conditions to enjoy. Again, I can't find much of any snowy news and specific numbers from ski areas. If I find any, I will add in here or tell you about it tomorrow. But it might also be windy especially in higher areas. (The Tashiro Area of Kagura is closed again due to wind). (The latest news posted by the famous Naeba ski area, and the follow up to news of their previous 'strawberry fair', is about an indoor kids room. Not a word about skiing or snowboarding or fresh snow. I promise to shut up about that kind of thing now! And in all fairness, the Dragondola account is mentioning 5-10cm). 5-10cm of fresh is not enough snow for a full reset, of course, particularly down at town level, but all the ski areas around town should be happy this morning. And I'm not embarrassed to be excited about it! (It usually takes at least 25cm for that, but... spring). There is more snow on forecasts over the coming week. Perhaps Tuesday and then Thursday/Friday. Keep it coming please. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It has been a good 24 hours. Perhaps unexpectedly, the snow continued yesterday and it's actually snowing early this morning too. We've seen an additional 10cm since the report yesterday (with just a small dusting of that from overnight). Kagura is reporting 3cm 'since yesterday'. It's so good to see everywhere good and white once again, and from what I gathered from a few people yesterday there was 20-30cm of fresh snow at higher elevations yesterday. The forecasts for today generally say cloud in the morning and some sun later on. Some say the sun might make an earlier appearance and there are actually a few signs of breaks in the cloud in some directions. As of 7:20am though, some light snow still lingering. We might get some more snow tomorrow, too. --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 220cm Notes: Special night skiing is planned for 14th, 21st, 28th March and 4th April ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 170cm Notes: The top connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open Floodlit night skiing on Fridays and Saturdays until 28th March (until 8:00pm) ----------------------- Iwappara Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 125cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th March (until 7:00pm on weekdays and Sundays, until 8:00pm on Saturdays and nights before holidays) ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 145cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 22nd March (until 9:00pm) The Atema and Osawa base car parks (and associated runs) are scheduled to be open on weekends only ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 300cm Base: 220cm ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 170cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays until 28th March (until 2:00am the next morning) ---------------------------- Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 215cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Saturdays and Sundays until 14th March (until 8:00pm on Saturdays and 7:00pm on Sundays) ---------------------------- Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 270cm Base: 130cm ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 190cm Base: 130cm Notes: Tanenokoyama pair lift and Prince Number 1 gondola not operating due to avalanche danger Daily floodlit night skiing until 21st March (until 8:30pm) ---------------------------- NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 145cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 180cm Base: 90cm Notes: The upper Kogen area and base area are both open The downhill course is currently closed The Ropeway connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open ---------------------------- Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 150cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 110cm Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Monday 9th March 2026 Total snowfall at base so far 913cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 50 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 68cm (on 25th January) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days January 2026 snowfall 595cm reported on 23 days February 2026 snowfall 132cm reported on 13 days March 2026 snowfall 30cm reported on 4 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The clouds did clear up yesterday morning and the sun came out. Some cloud did remain but it was a fine day weather-wise. We have had a dusting of snow overnight, though it's in the mm (rather than cm). Adding in the mm that we got post-report yesterday, I can just about justify the 1cm in this report. Perhaps some more cm in higher elevations again (?) Forecasts tell us to expect some snow during the day today. (And it is indeed snowing lightly in places). Onegai shimasu! Tomorrow might just be a cloudy day with clearer skies currently forecast for Thursday. We probably can't expect much fresh snow going forward, but temperatures not rising much would be a big help in us keeping what we have. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this seas 917cm Posted on Wednesday 11th March 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We did get snow falling yesterday in town - at times very light, at times somewhat heavier. It didn't end up with much in terms of new accumulation and the roads have remained clear, but with another dusting overnight on top of the car I can add 3cm to this report. Hopefully some more than that in the mountains. This morning starts with grey cloud cover. Forecasts differ regarding what to expect today - either largely cloudy for the whole day, or the clouds parting and us getting some sunshine this morning. Happily it shouldn't warm up too much with a high of around +3C or +4C forecast for town. Sun is expected tomorrow morning. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 13th March 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 917cm Posted on Friday 13th March 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Morning from Yuzawa. We did get some blue sky yesterday morning but it was limited and it remained largely cloudy. It was quite cold out there, and in some ways it felt more like February than our actual February felt. If that makes sense... That lack of a big March warm-up is really going to help ski areas get to their planned closing dates. There seems to have been a dusting of snow at higher elevations, but nothing much. It was actually trying to snow last night when I went out for a walk. It is another cloudy morning and that is probably what we are going to get today and tomorrow. Some forecasts even say there might be some (probably very) light snow at times again. GALA Yuzawa is going to be open for night skiing tomorrow, the first of four this season. • Yuzawa Now: Monday 16th March 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 917cm Posted on Monday 16th March 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We had a bit of brighter skies and even some blue sky early this morning but it's rather grey and cloudy now at around 10am. It might clear up later on. A sprinkling of snow again in upper areas, though no cm being reported. Without the sun it's keeping fairly cold, still. Again, that has really helped this March and even with some patches of ground showing in some town level areas, I'm guessing ski areas will be able to remain open until their planned closing dates in March. Whether higher resorts can continue through golden week etc is another matter. Sun is forecast tomorrow and we do expect temps to start rising during this week.
