Still, 10cm is always welcome. And there is more due through the next couple of days so hopefully we will get to some bigger numbers soon. Hakuba Cortina appears to be reporting 18-30cm of snow (base to top) which is a bigger number than anything the others seem to be reporting, so it looks like it is one of those times when the more northern mountains get more snow. That sometimes happens. It's a cold one too. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning everyone. This is Santa, I thought I'd take over the report today. The normal reporter kindly left me some toast to enjoy early on this morning. It was jolly good too. Makes a change from all the fried chicken. Anyway, you gnarly dude types want to know about snow, right? Well, I brought some top quality fresh snow for you all, and I promise there will be more right of that through until the end of the year. Only the best for, (what's this place called), Niseko! Had to check, I'm sure this place used to be busier. OK so my duties for the day are over now I think, so I'm off out to slide on the snow. It should be totally excellent conditions today, I am told. See you next year. ----- Ski area news: Holiday Number 1 pair and Miharashi courses now open at Hirafu; Jumbo Number 3 pair at Annupuri now also moving. (Hanazono data not updated for today at time of report). Mad numbers news: Yes, today Hirafu are reporting 15cm of fresh snowfall and yes, their official snow depth numbers decreased by 10cm. These things happen. :) ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -8℃, 10cm snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -10℃, 15cm new snow, light winds. Annupuri 1000m: -11℃, 15cm new snow, light winds. Coastal data Benkei cape: NW12m/s, Kamui cape: WSW11m/s, 1010 hPa, 1.1m waves. The atmospheric pressure gradient is shallow and the Niseko mountains are calm. There is no significant snowdrift development and the general avalanche risk is low. Due to a slow start followed by heavy snowfall this winter, preparation on the upper lifts and slopes above 1000m has been delayed. Expect a bit more time before the peak gates are able to be opened. However Moiwa Gate 6 @ 800m was opened yesterday. Snow is deep off the groomers, make sure you're packing snowshoes or skins if you get out there. If you get stuck in a creek without them you might not be able to make it back at all. The snow is good, don't be greedy, take an early traverse if needed. Niseko Rules are for riding off course at the resorts, not for backcountry. People at all skill levels and experiences visit Niseko and the rules are in place for everyone's safety. If one person ducks ropes, someone always follows tracks, a prime recipe for an accident. Don't duck ropes when the gates are closed. The wind is expected to pick up this afternoon. Frostbite! For this weekend there's not much fresh snow to report - just yet (some being reported on the mountains this morning) - but ski areas are doing their best to open up as much as possible. One notable opening is the top Grat quad at Happo-one. And I can see that the Tree Riding Zones at Hakuba 47 are also now available. A few days of good consistent snowfall would really get places open fully and if the forecasts are correct then the next few days should deliver. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Ho ho ho, it's Christmas! Lots of people here seem to think that the 24th actually is the 'big day'. It is after all when you eat the cake, fried chicken and go out on dates (if you are lucky... but don't forget to socially distance!). But of course, most days here in Niseko are special, and this morning I bring you news of 12cm of fresh snowfall since my report yesterday. I note that Niseko Grand Hirafu are sticking their heads out and reporting a much larger 30cm of snow this morning. Impressive to see the official snow depth up to 245cm this morning. (Hey, isn't it nearly time to get those top lifts moving?) It's a cold start to the day and the snow is beautiful. Conditions should be very good indeed. And the forecast remains for consistent snow at least well into the coming week. Just how we like it. :) Cloudy, light snow falling as I look outside now and some breaks in the cloud away from the mountain. Remember to take the Christmas tree down late tonight, or tomorrow morning at the latest. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -7℃, 10cm snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -11℃, 20cm new snow, snow drift development, light blizzard. Annupuri 1000m: -12℃, 15cm new snow, snow drift development, light blizzard conditions. Coastal data Benkei cape: NW13m/s, Kamui cape: WNW12m/s, 1019 hPa, 1.5m waves. We are currently under the influence of a weak winter weather pattern with winds and snow on the seas and above 800m. Snow drift development continues, however from evaluation of data avalanche risk is low. The mountain is semi reset and easy riding. There is major cornice development above 1100m which is prone to easily collapse. New snow slabs on leeward slopes continue to stablise with slow development. The risk of surface avalanches on 40deg slopes continues, fracturing on weak layers within the snowpack. Do not hang around in the gullies and creek bottoms, avalanches come from above. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Well at least we got some extra covering last night. It won't be until the evenings of the next 3 days when we will see anything more substantial but with it comes a very big drop in temperature, courtesy of Siberia. The snow was pleasantly soft at Paradise/Utopia/Hyakumannin/Diamond Valley and the Chuo slopes yesterday albeit visibility was poor. Lower down was rather hard but it is much nicer today. The Kurohime Super Giant slope was roped off yesterday. It had not been groomed so the previous powder was furrowed hard so do not be tempted to cross the rope if it is still up today (same for anywhere else). The good thing was that the hard ground meant not so much skating on the flats. Big surprise going through fog to find the tops sunny and brilliantly clear. Snow also fluffy so a good day today! It is -9c now and will only increase a little to a high of -7c. There is no significant wind around the base area. Cloud is hanging around the resort which will mean varying visibility. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. And what a fine morning it is! I have just been out and measured a clean 40cm of fresh snowfall. That has been incoming both during the day yesterday and overnight. Snowing lightly just at the moment. All courses are available at Niseko HANAZONO and they have all their four lifts operating. The other areas are still not at that 'fully open' status, though we are getting there. I would expect things to be developing further in the coming few days, especially with all the incoming snow that is forecast. It looks like the snowfall across the coming week is going to be consistent and at times heavy. (But light and fluffy). That is certainly good way to end the year and the best we can ask for. Let's hope wind doesn't create problems for us. If you are lucky enough to be here to enjoy this, take care out there. And indeed, take care wherever you may be! The last I heard, Santa comes out of his 14 days quarantine tomorrow. Presumably his status is something other than 'tourist'. So he should be out on the slopes at the weekend doing all his Santa stuff. Question is, will he be skiing or snowboarding? ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -7℃, 45cm snow in 24h, snowing. Moiwa700m: -9℃, N8m/s, 50cm new snow in 24h. Annupuri1000m: -10℃, 60cm snowdrift in 24h. Coastal data Benkei cape: NNW15m/s, Kamui cape: NNW10m/s, 1017 hPa, 2.4m waves. A northerly snowstorm has continued under the wintery pressure distribution and made snowdrifts grow gradually. Large unstable snowdrifts and cornices are present in the SE aspects above 800m elevation and the general avalanche risk remains high today. 80cm thick surface slab avalanches could occur in large gully terrains. Better avoid riding all the way down to the bottom. Beware of suffocation falling in deep snow. Gate7 is scheduled to open today. Riding underneath the chairlift is prohibited due to risk of collision with the chairs. Please abide by the rules and the ski patrol’s instructions. The 24th annual Niseko Avalanche Meeting will be held at the Niseko Chomin Center at 6pm Dec 29th. Yuji Ishikawa, chairman of Hokkaido Mountain Guide Association, will be our guest this year. Mr. Ishikawa achieved the first ascent of the Batura 2 peak (8848m) in the Karakoram range and also climbed Mt. Dolje-Lakpa in the Nepalese Himalaya. He is one of the most renowned climbers of Hokkaido. The snow and weather is not bad today.
