Viz remains poor and it is cold when you pick up speed, however, the snow of course is marvellous (but perhaps groomed in the morning in many places meaning the opportunity of great powder wasted). Many chairlifts are slow in opening this morning due to clearance if snow on seats, landing areas and ice. Otherwise, I'd say a good day to be had with more again tonight. The morning is very pleasant with big breaks of clear sky and plenty of sunshine hitting the village and the ski area slopes. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning from Shiga Kogen. 27cm of fresh snow - excellent quality too, I might add. It hasn't been too windy which is definitely a plus. It's very cold. I am writing this from Okushiga Kogen where it's really pounding down at the moment. Lifts are moving but you can hardly see them with very limited visibility. Things are less severe in other parts of Shiga Kogen by the looks of webcams, but generally snow is forecast at least into tomorrow. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Yesterday the snow continued falling but the main thing I thought was... it was really cold! This morning is really cold too. Lots of cloud and some very light snow falling in places. Feels like it might actually be brightening up a bit but there's more snow on the forecast. This morning ski areas are reporting around another modest 10cm of fresh snow; Cortina wins the 'most snow' award by reporting 20cm on it's upper area. Hakuba 47 and Tsugaike hit the 2m of snowfall mark in the official numbers. Most of the ski areas are now mostly open, including Jigatake over in Omachi city (and part of the 'Hakuba Valley' promotions). Hakuba Sanosaka is sadly sitting the season out. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. Lots more snow to report along with cold conditions and it continues to fall this morning and due to continue into tomorrow. Yesterday afternoon the ski area was reporting 30cm on the top area and this morning there's an additional 38cm. That adds up to 68cm, which sounds fantastic, of course. I believe an investigation is in order! But. I'm a bit confused with the official snowfall numbers these last few days. When I checked yesterday morning, the ski area was reporting 20-30cm on the lower areas. But later in the day, that same number (the previous day to 8am yesterday number) had changed to 40-45cm. I'm really not sure what is going on there and will try to find out. I'll ask Naski. And I'm going to keep an eye on the numbers. I like to believe the official numbers and hope I'll continue to be able to do so. Nerd hat off, just lots of snow is of course great news. And conditions should be excellent. Visibility limited especially at the top of the mountain. I am hearing that the Skyline course should be open soon... though it doesn't seem to be tagged as open this morning. A handy 50cm of it too with as much as 61cm being reported by the ski area. So just another day in Geto... ;) Oh yes, more snow due. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here We had to put up with some pesky wind yesterday messing about with lift operations. Hopefully that will not be an issue today, and all lifts (that are scheduled to be open) look set to start the day. This morning I have another 14cm of fresh snowfall to report to you from base. My preferred daily fresh snowfall number is 20cm and above, but I'm just perhaps a little bit greedy... and when Niseko is on a roll consistency is one of the great features of this place. I'm sure there is probably that much higher up on the mountain. Anyway it is light snow this morning. Visibility is rather limited in places but variable. (Away from the mountain there is even a bit of blue sky though I doubt we'll get any of that here). As I have been saying these last few days, the forecast has consistent snowfall lined up into 2022. With todays snowfall I have measured 343cm this season so far. That's already about the same as the end of December last year, so looks like we are going to beat last year handily. Up to that point anyway. The general news of the world might well be rubbish, tiring and sigh-inducing, but at least we have our snow to bring smiles to faces! Hopefully for those of you reading from afar, just thinking about it might help too. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -9℃, 10cm snowfall, calm. Moiwa800m: -13℃, 20cm new snow, snowdrifts developing slowly. Annupuri1100m: -13℃, N10m/s, 20cm new snow with snowdrift development in various places. Coastal data Benkei cape: N10m/s, Kamui cape WSW11m/s, 1010hPa, 1.8m waves. The wind has stayed strong in high elevation with the continuing wintry pressure distribution. Cornices and snowdrifts have slowly developed above 1000m and the avalanche risk is high around the Backbowl sidewalls (Kozan no Sawa), Anupuri bowl (O-sawa), Mikaeri-sawa and Higashi-One cornice slopes. Avoid dropping into suspicious slopes simultaneously and stay away from the bottom of the gullies and/or steep slopes. Many of the past accidents occurred when leeward, wind-affected snowdrift slabs that grew drastically during 20+m/s snowstorms collapsed and triggered a slide. The snow condition changes day by day. It might be safe today, but could completely change tomorrow. Always be vigilant of the hazards that may be present. Anemometers are being installed throughout the mountain and the data will eventually be available to see on a separate website. Peak gates will need some more time to open. Please respect the Niseko Rules. Beware of sudden weather changes and frostbites. For those who were able to get up early after any festivities last night, great powder awaited. Viz is poor though and definitely colder. Given COVID, most wear masks permanently now so no chance of freezing cheeks as you whiz down. More expected tonight so any staying past the weekend will enjoy another day if powder. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning from Shiga Kogen. About 15cm of snow up until now and it's coming down nicely at the moment, though the rate depends on where you are. Perhaps was expecting more. But anyway it's really dumping over at Okushiga Kogen at the moment but less so in the central areas. Limited visibility this morning and a moderate NW wind. Snow should be falling through the end of tomorrow, and then it looks like there's another snow storm coming for over New Year. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . There's fresh snow to report this morning, though I can't hide my disappointment as I was expecting to be able to report more than 10cm. Still, 10cm is always welcome. And there is more due through the next couple of days so hopefully we will get to some bigger numbers soon. Hakuba Cortina appears to be reporting 18-30cm of snow (base to top) which is a bigger number than anything the others seem to be reporting, so it looks like it is one of those times when the more northern mountains get more snow. That sometimes happens. It's a cold one too. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Yes, we have a whole lot of snow around this morning, it's still coming down and there's lots more due through tomorrow. The ski area is this morning reporting 20-45cm across the mountain. (Apologies that I was not able to check their number yesterday afternoon; was just a bit down at base). Bring it on! Visibility very limited, so extra care very much advised in all these fresh conditions. Looking at the course map, there are a few parts of the mountain that are not yet open, the main one being Skyline and a few areas in the central part. But a large part of Nozawa is now open - and there's plenty of choice to enjoy this beautiful snow. Information checked each morning. All subject to change.
