- Myoko Now: Saturday 12th February 2022
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 1335cm Posted on Saturday 12th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Sunny and slightly hazy today in Myoko. Nice sparkly snow this morning, thanks to some pretty cold overnight temperatures (got to about -9° at base, my trusty recording device says). Those sparkles are faceted crystals on the surface, growing overnight as moisture from the air builds up on the snow crystals. Could be a worry in other places, where big facets stay in the snow and create a weak layer (think potential avalanches), but they pretty quickly disappear here in most cases. Oh, and you know you're self-employed when you don't know when it's a national holiday! I was happy to see all the lifts running yesterday, not realizing it was the first day of a three-day holiday weekend here in Japan. We didn't have the stream of cars coming up the hill in front of my reporting station that we used to see; I think people are getting smart and taking the prefectural road, which is less steep and better plowed (as previously reported in SnowJapan). But the parking lots are full, so customers are here (and welcome to Myoko). A modest fall of snow since yesterday and currently it is overcast but the peaks can be seen. The sun should make an appearance later on and it promises to be a lot bluer tomorrow. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 1334cm Posted on Friday 11th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Just a little light snow falling today, and the sky is brightening up a bit. Even some blue skies to the north...obviously we're still in the storm cycle that didn't exactly bring heavy snow to the Tokyo metropolitan area. But I am happy for you city folk; nothing spells a day of traffic confusion quite like several tens of centimeters of snow on the city streets. I wish there were more to report from Myoko, our fair town at the base of the mountain of the same name, but it is quiet. Lots of restaurants aren't opening; many that are open don't serve alcohol, so what's the point in going out? There is still so much snow everywhere that we're never really done pushing it into more convenient piles. The machines are even tired, as it seems everybody is making minor repairs, changing belts, etc. Nice white mountains, though, when things clear up enough to see them. There was some clearer skies earlier on but now it's cloudy skies - there's even the chance of some light snow during the day. Currently it is -2C in the village and -6C up top. It's a national holiday meaning it's the first day of a long weekend. The third photo today shows Naski getting ready for the morning. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 463cm Posted on Friday 11th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It's the long weekend with many people off work today due to the National Foundation Day national holiday. This weekend is often one of the busiest of the season. Some snow during the day out there yesterday, though not delivering big numbers. For example, Hakuba 47 were saying there was about 5cm. The only overnight snow being reported this morning is by Hakuba Cortina (5cm). Hakuba Happo-one have curiously posted 10cm for Nakiyama and none from higher areas. Anyway enough of numbers. There's blue sky above us this morning and it's a fine start to the day. There's still a lot of cloud about and actually it's still snowing in some areas. Perhaps it will cloud over for the day. There's a chance of clearer skies again tomorrow. Wind doesn't look like it should be an issue this weekend so generally pleasant conditions, I'd say. ----- Total snowfall accumulation this season so far [*upper areas] [As reported by official sources at time of this report] Hakuba Goryu: 755cm Hakuba 47: 710cm Hakuba Happo-one: 623cm Hakuba Cortina: 843cm Tsugaike Mountain Resort: 712cm ----- Hakuba Goryu Reported snowfall this morning: - Upper: 0cm Official snow depth: - Upper: 360cm - Toomi: 180cm Hakuba 47 Reported snowfall this morning: - Summit: 0cm - Lower: 0cm Official snow depth: - Top: 355cm - Base: 180cm Hakuba Happo-one Reported snowfall this morning: - Kurobishi: 0cm - Riesen: 1cm - Usagidaira: 4cm - Nakiyama: 10cm Official snow depth: - Kurobishi: 375cm - Usagidaira: 228cm - Nakiyama: 120cm Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field Reported snowfall this morning: - Mountain Side: 0cm - Village Side: 0cm Official snow depth: - Mountain Side: 200cm - Village Side: 95cm Tsugaike Mountain Resort Reported snowfall this morning: - Upper: 0cm Official snow depth: - Upper: 328cm - Lower: 120cm Hakuba Norikura Onsen Official snow depth: - 350cm Hakuba Cortina Reported snowfall (12 hours): - Summit: 5cm - Lower: 5cm Official snow depth: - Top: 360cm - Base: 240cm Hakuba Now 2021-2022 season Data as Friday 11th February 2022 Total snowfall at base so far 463cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 44 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 54cm (14th January) November 2021 snowfall 29cm reported on 4 days December 2021 snowfall 130cm reported on 12 days January 2022 snowfall 228cm reported on 20 days February 2022 snowfall 76cm reported on 8 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Hakuba. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A bit of sun today! A cloud front has slowly been moving in from the ocean/north, but the sun is still out in Myoko, which to be honest is a nice change. It's also helping to bring lingering snow off roofs (although with some older buildings with roofs in poor condition, that snow is really hanging on in big quantities, which is a little scary right now. When it comes down, it will genuinely be avalanche time). A little bit of fluffy, sparkly, very light snow fell overnight. A nice white coating, and hardly worth shoveling.
