We were hoping for a nice fall of fresh stuff to cover up the dust and maybe start getting ready of the crust on the surface of the snow. But we haven't gotten that much yet, and the sun keeps popping out, so it doesn't look like a powder day in Myoko today. For the backcountry people, it's that transitional period now, isn't it? It would be great to have a nice heavy snowfall, even if it's heavy spring snow, but it would also be nice for the snow to just settle down and firm up so we could get some good spring skiing in. But let's not be negative! There's a ton of snow on the hill, and lots of time left to enjoy it. There's always something to do on the snow, whatever the condition, right? The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. It feels colder this morning! And later in the day wet turned into snow overnight. It's not often that lower areas report more snow than the top, but that's what we have today (see the list below). I see more too. Curious. Whatever, Naski is out in it and still has a smiler on their face. You can always rely on Naski. Visibility is pretty low out there even at base as of 8:30am and the snow is coming down. Still lifts appear to be opening as planned for those who would like to brave these conditions. Make sure you know where you're going - and stick with friends... would be my advice. Tomorrow I might have some winter-like Nozawa-rashi numbers to report, which would of course be great. It will be calmer and clearer too, so good for folks who want to enjoy it. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. Yesterday we worried about wind again. But hey, how about this?! There's still some wind but it feels colder again and feels like a winter morning. Hakuba Goryu this morning win the 'most reported snowfall' - they are claiming 40cm of fresh snow on their upper slopes. I do like the sound of that. Other numbers coming in aren't as big but generally agree on there being 20-30cm on the mountainsides. Nice. And I have measured 17cm on the ground too. It is still snowing and more is due through the day today. If we get some sun tomorrow morning like forecasts show, tomorrow should be a very good time to be here. Well, today is too, of course, if you like being out there in the snow! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have a fresh 10cm of snowfall to report to you this morning. As I write this there is some light snow falling and it is mostly cloudy but there are some breaks in the cloud, especially away from the mountain, and it is quite bright in places. It feels like it might clear up. More snow is due tomorrow and Sunday. And now for something completely different... ----- The 2021-2022 season so far: until the end February 2022 It’s time to take a look back at February, that month with not so many days in it and whizzes by way too quickly every year. Before I start, I’d like to point out that all of the numbers I mention below – and more - are laid out very nicely in the ‘Snowfall analysis’ page of this report. There’s a link to it above. If you are viewing on mobile, the link is in a drop down menu thingy. Here are my observed snowfall numbers for the month: February 2022: 337cm February 2021: 325cm February 2020: 143cm February 2019: 198cm February 2018: 299cm February 2017: 160cm February 2016: 266cm February 2015: 196cm February 2014: 178cm February 2013: 316cm So actually, 2022 was a record year! 337cm is the most I have ever observed in February since starting the reports in the 2012-2013 season. Hurray! Here are my season-to-date numbers, from the beginning of this season to the end of February 2022: 2021/2022 season up to end of February 2022: 1054cm 2020/2021 season up to end of February 2021: 1122cm 2019/2020 season up to end of February 2020: 659cm 2018/2019 season up to end of February 2019: 900cm 2017/2018 season up to end of February 2018: 1198cm 2016/2017 season up to end of February 2017: 603cm 2015/2016 season up to end of February 2016: 874cm 2014/2015 season up to end of February 2015: 1002cm 2013/2014 season up to end of February 2014: 1037cm 2012/2013 season up to end of February 2013: 1295cm 1054cm is not quite a record, but it's up there and very respectable indeed. In terms of snow, we have done well. Here is how much of the total snowfall for a season we have already had by the end of February in previous seasons: By the end of February 2021, as a % of the season total: about 93% By the end of February 2020, as a % of the season total: about 91% By the end of February 2019, as a % of the season total: about 95% By the end of February 2018, as a % of the season total: about 95% By the end of February 2017, as a % of the season total: about 88% By the end of February 2016, as a % of the season total: about 88% By the end of February 2015, as a % of the season total: about 88% By the end of February 2014, as a % of the season total: about 89% By the end of February 2013, as a % of the season total: about 87% Looking forward to what we might get this month, here is how much snow I have observed in previous seasons during March: March 2021: 79cm March 2020: 59cm March 2019: 45cm March 2018: 49cm March 2017: 83cm March 2016: 109cm March 2015: 139cm March 2014: 113cm March 2013: 165cm As you can see from the list above, in recent seasons we have been getting less snow in March. Take a look at 2013 - that looks good! But we cannot complain, we have had a good snow year. And the people who have been lucky enough to be here have enjoyed those uncharacteristically quiet slopes. Other comments I could make are in line with what I said in my summary last month. OK, please allow me to do a bit of handholding for those of you who are not used to the new setup. If you go back up to the links at the top of this report and click on Season archives, you will find lots of other new interesting data. You can see that I reported snowfall on 25 of the 28 days in February 2022. And for the season so far, I have recorded snowfall on 86 days in total. I used to have to manually count those, but it’s all laid out there now. And this information is available for each season going back to 2012-2013, not only the current season. All you need to do is use the links at the bottom of any page within the Now reports to go to each Season archive page. If you want to view old Archive reports, there are two main ways to do that (apart from just clicking on Previous or Next links at the bottom of each individual report, of course). Hirafu 1250m: -11℃, strong N winds, snowdrift development, good visibility. Hirafu 1000m: -9.3℃, ESE1.8m/s, 15cm new snow, good visibility. Coastal data- Benkei cape: NW9m/s, Kamui cape: W8m/s, 1013hPa, wave 1.8m. The isobars are moving further apart and a westerly wind up to 10m/s is blowing on the seas and mountains. Snow drift development due to the low pressure snowfall and accompanied winds eased by midnight, with development reaching 60-80cm depth/150-200cm length above 800m. Slab stabilization is continuing and cornices will still break with little stimulation. From data and observation the general avalanche risk has dropped. All gates are expected to be open. Please follow the patrols advice. Cracks are hidden by the new snow, take care not to fall in. Cornices will collapse instantaneously with little stimulation, especially HigashiOne and Moiwa Bowl. A cornice collapse can trigger avalanches below, use caution. From the snowfall transition the avalanche risk on Annupuri Osawa cornice slopes and Kozan no Sawa sidewalls will be high all day. Do not or take a high traverse at gates 4, 5 or 8 or mindlessly cut knolls or cornices . Soft slabs from low pressure snowfall are prone to surface avalanches from rider stimulus, beware. The snow in the trees is not too deep and skis well. The latest Geto Kogen Now report can be found here . Well, I wasn't expecting this. Around 30cm of snow this morning with the ski area itself saying there's 45cm on the upper areas of the mountain! I suppose for Geto that is kind of 'light'. ;) So yes we got snow yesterday and there has been light snow falling this morning but it should be clearing up this morning. It should be a good morning. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Another day with a clear start, and clouds starting to come in over Mt. Myoko. A wild change of weather midday yesterday; it was sunny and nice right around noon, when a wall of fog came up from the valley and brought visibility down to just a few meters. Some people up on the mountain said they were literally skiing from tree to tree as a group, just to keep from getting lost. There's a crunchy crust on the snow, with just a few centimeters of sticky new snow on top. On piste it should be great; those heading out from the areas will probably not have a great day (especially with visibility being obscured). Tomorrow it looks to be even warmer, and then there's the possibility of heavy snow starting late tomorrow and into Sunday. Maybe. Mountain weather, huh? For the moment we have some cloud over us here, but the sun just starting to break through in lower areas. It feels like it is going to clear up. Sunshine is forecast for tomorrow and the day after and it will get slightly warmer (hopefully not too much). Lots of snow and some very fine conditions. I hope some of you reading this can be here to enjoy it. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. A little snow from early this morning. Hopefully we might get some more during the day today, and then more over the weekend. The mild conditions have been noticeable. Alas the march of time does not stop and we have to face up to Spring at some point. But let's hold on to winter a bit longer, hey. We certainly don't have snow issues as we head towards spring and ski areas will surely be able to open as planned into May. Some regular top-ups would be fine. I'll post my look back at February tomorrow. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -5℃, light wind and snow from 5am. Moiwa 800m: -5.5℃, SSW1.9m/s, trace new snowfall. Annupuri 1150m: -8.1℃, W4.3m/s, mild snowstorm, poor visibility. Hirafu 1250m: -9℃, poor visibility. Hirafu 1000m: -7.8℃, SSW7.4m/s, starting to snow. Coastal data- Benkei cape: S5m/s, Kamui cape: SW8m/s, 1002hPa, 0.9m waves. Light low pressure snow began falling at dawn, above 1000m a bit stormy. The wind is expected to strengthen from the west through the day and snowdrift development to pick up. The general avalanche risk in the morning is low, however it will increase throughout the day. Gate openings are yet to be decided, please respect the patrols decisions. Soft slabs that are formed by this low pressure snowfall are prone to collapse into flow type avalanches, even in small quantities. Also cornices, like Higashi One, can easily collapse as they develop causing avalanches below. The mountain is covered in a thin layer of new snow, but depending on aspect and elevation can be just enough to hide diabolical conditions underneath. Yesterday an avalanche survey worker was injured when his binding did not release.in a fall. It's a good time to consider if you have your bindings cranked to high? Maybe 8 is enough? If gates below 1000m open, avoid traversing steep slopes and creek sidewalls. If enough people do this, someone will eventually get caught. Beware of a sudden change in weather, is your beacon switched on. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Yesterday turned out very fine and sunny with a very light snowfall overnight. This morning is going very much in accordance with the forecast. It is cloudy, foggy (higher up) and snowing lightly on and off with wind around. A modest amount of snow is expected during the morning. It should, however, get brighter as the day goes on and perhaps turn out like yesterday.
