Kind of foggy as well as the snow. Kumanoyu haven't reported anything yet but Yakebitaiyama are reporting 10cm of fresh snow since last night. It is due to ease off during the day today and we'll probably get sun again tomorrow morning... then more snow tomorrow night. Oh yes, and then some warmer conditions late week. All a bit changeable at the moment. Anyway, fresh snow sounds good so I have to go and check! The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . After a fine day during the day yesterday with some rather mild conditions, it was back to snow overnight. The ski area this morning is reporting 15cm on the upper areas (and 5cm down around base). Today we might get some light snow and we might get some sun, and some more snow overnight. There's night skiing again tonight until 8:00pm at Nagasaka and remember that tomorrow is a national holiday in Japan so it will be busier than a normal Monday. Looking ahead at various forecasts, it appears there's going to be a bit of all sorts going on, mild conditions might be more prominent; especially towards the end of the week. Not too much, please! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's snowing, but milder today with the temperature up several degrees from yesterday. Really nice snowflaky flakes, too: six-armed, kind of rounded and very sticky. It packs perfectly (attention snowball fight fans). Hope it snows a lot; we need a good base to be ready for a week from now, when we could get very warm days and (ugh) rain. The forecast has a couple of huge high-pressure cells sitting out in the Pacific, bringing warm winds across most of Japan. So we all suffer together. Or maybe not; weather does change, right? The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . A fine day yesterday. Lots of cloud stuck around but there was blue sky and sun too. No snow is being reported by the ski areas in Hakuba Village this morning but there has been a little snow in places, and more as you go north. Both Cortina and Tsugaike are reporting a layer of 10cm of fresh. It seems like the snow clouds generally stayed a bit to the north. It's variable weather this morning as well with cloud and some blue sky in places and light snow still falling in others (again, to the north). A difficult one to pin down! Maybe a sunny start tomorrow but snow due again overnight and into Tuesday. Changing the subject, someone asked about 'the mask thing' I touched on in a comment yesterday. (I'll try to avoid minefields in my comments here!) For most Japanese people, the situation seems pretty straightforward. People still generally wear facemasks when out and about, even though it is mainly on a request basis (rather than being a law). Some months ago, the Japanese government did actually say that facemasks were not always necessary in outdoor situations when there are not many people around, but that did not seem to have much effect on general behaviour. Most people seem to wear them without being overly bothered. It's just what you do. For many years pre-covid, people in this country have been used to wearing masks when they have a cold or feel unwell. (Or don't want to apply make-up in the morning! Yes, that has been known to be a thing.) So culturally, people are used to the concept of wearing facemasks, and there is little fuss. It feels like it will take time for things to change... For those coming to Japan in the coming weeks: the situation will immediately become evident once you arrive at the airport and venture beyond. It is obviously not for me to tell other people what to do, so I won't. I'm sure visitors will each observe the situation on the ground and make decisions regarding their behaviour. For what it's worth, I usually wear a balaclava type head covering when I'm skiing, but I was wearing that pre-covid - my face gets cold! I wear a facemask off the slopes when I feel it is appropriate, even in a few situations where I personally think it is a bit over-the-top. I am fine going along with the social norms. I feel that this year the mention of covid-19 in ski area environments seems much less prominent than last year, and the fuss made over enforcement (for want of a better word) also seems less. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko and the first day of a long weekend here in Japan. (Monday is Coming of Age Day). Just a little snowfall since my report yesterday (mostly just after my report). It's a fine Saturday morning. Just a short while ago, there was some very light snow falling. There is still cloud around, but the sun is making appearances and there is blue sky to enjoy. Looks like the next cm of snow should be around Monday. Be sure to check out the Avalanche Report today... --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -7C, no snowfall. Moiwa800m: -7.2C, W2.1m/s. Anupuri1000m: -10.6C, W4.7m/s. Mizuno no Sawa: -8.6C, NNW3.2m/s. Hanazono: -10.2℃, NNW0.3m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW6m/s, Kamui cape N5m/s, 1013hPa, 1.1m waves. Calm weather from coast to mountains. There are no new snowfall and snowdrift development above 800m elevation is minimal. The overall avalanche risk is low today. Yesterday morning at Annupuri gate #2, while many people were waiting for the gate to open, one guy trespassed the rope just under the gate and started riding down O-sawa as a matter of course. The ski patrol tried to halt him, but he ignored and rode all the way down to Moiwa. The poacher’s escape didn’t stop there, and kept going, riding down the road, until he miserably fell when he almost got hit and killed by an upcoming bus. He got yelled at by the driver, but his escape didn’t stop. He unstrapped his board, then started running down the road towards Kanro no Mori hotel as fast as he could. The ski patrol is an ex-national athlete and had no problem following the poacher, but he kept a safe distance to avoid any accidents. Shame on this poacher. We even feel sorry for him being such a kook. This case will be discussed during the committee's meeting next week. The poacher is identified and if he doesn’t show up for an apology, he will be banned from riding in Niseko. The Niseko Rules is the area's official regulation and nobody is exempt from it, no matter their experience, knowledge, skills, nationality, ethnicity, age or home. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . 3cm to report from base, though all of that was in the hour or so after my report yesterday. There has been no new snowfall overnight across the mountain. This morning it's fine and sunny up top, with a thick fog/cloud feel to proceedings down around base areas. You can just about see Naski on the Hikage image below. That will probably have cleared up soon after I post this report. So, fine weather expected today, maybe some snow overnight tonight, but maybe some more sun tomorrow. There's night skiing tonight and tomorrow night at Nagasaka. Enjoy your weekend. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It is a very clear day with partly cloudy conditions. Plenty of blue sky and sun mean visibility is excellent. There is no wind and there has been a light top up of 5cm of new snow overnight. The high will reach -4c, so mild conditions and not too cold. The outlook for tomorrow is sunny conditions with no overnight snow expected. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. It doesn't feel quite as cold this morning, but it's still cold. When I first got up much earlier this morning it wasn't snowing. Since then, though, we have had a few cm of snow and it is still snowing at 8:15am. And quite heavily too. While there's not much of it forecast for today and over the weekend, that sometimes doesn't stop the weather above our mountain! Perhaps we might get to enjoy some clearer weather today? Let's see. Anyway, today is a big day with various side country gates set to open for the first time. Have fun, but always remember to take care out there. Weather permitting, Niseko Annupuri will be doing the First Run thingy tomorrow, Sunday and Monday. This is where the Annupuri Gondola is open from 7:20am until 8:20am. The service costs 1,500 yen per person. (Unfortunately, it was cancelled over New Year due to weather conditions). --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -5C, no new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -7.6C, W7.1m/s, trace new snow, snowdrift development to dawn. Annupur1100m: -10.9C, WNW6.3m/s,snowdrift development. Mizuno no Sawa top: -9.4C, NNW4.3m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -10.8℃, ESE0.3, no new snow, good visibility. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNW11m/s, Kamui cape WNW5m/s, 1018hPa,1.7m waves. Annupuri Gate No2, Hirafu Peak Gate No3 and Fujiwara Gate No1 will open this morning. Gate No1 a little while after 2 and 3. Gates 5 & 8 opening will be decided by patrol. Poor snow coverage above 1000m this winter has caused a delays in preparations to get tops lifts running which in turn delayed opening the peak gates. Snow below 700m is a lot different to snow above 900m. The avalanche risk below 900m is dropping however the risk on cornice slopes, knolls and steep open slopes above 1000m has not decreased. Do not carelessly traverse under cornices. This can simulate deeply into the snowpack causing large avalanches. Avalanches follow the valley bottoms. Don't ever wait in the bottom of valleys. Please listen to the patrols instructions at the gates. Do not duck ropes. Beacons are not compulsory, but they can save your life. Carrying probes and shovels are also strongly recommended. Dont blindly follow unknown tracks. There is no bus service back from Goshiki Onsen, check your route before descending N and NW slopes from the peak. Do not enter strictly off limits areas Haru no Taki or Yu no Sawa to avoid crowds. Even if you survive, you will be banned from the ski resort. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. It started snowing early morning. Okushiga are reporting 5cm of fresh snow this morning, with Kumanoyu (the other ski area that reports these things) not reporting any at 7am. At the moment visibility is limited in some areas and decent in others. It's all very grey/white/silver. Weekend visitors might be pleased to hear that we may get to see the sun tomorrow morning. Would be great if we got a layer of fresh before then, though we are not expecting much today. In ski area news, the Shibutoge pair lift looks like it will be closed for the day. It will be back open by tomorrow. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Cloud with light snow at times/in places this morning, though I don't think we are expecting much snow today. My report is a bit later today on purpose. In recent days, the ski area seems to have posted a snowfall number early morning and then changing it after 8am (and after my report). Perhaps taking into account snow in that hour? Or a modified reading? Not sure. So I am keeping an eye on that and trying to work out what is happening. Obviously, I want the information posted on this report to be correct. Perhaps my report should be made after 8am every day, rather than before as I had been doing on some days recently. The obvious huge benefit of a post-8am report is that Naski can be seen on the Hikage webcam image. Colder temperatures yesterday and overnight; the stars were out early in the evening (didn't have to plow this morning so I don't know what was happening early on), but the snow is back on now, with a little bit of extra accumulated. Nice, as several of the resorts show a reduction in snowpack (saw it here at our little study area, too). Good snow conditions onpiste, though! Still pretty bushy in the backcountry, and most of the streams that need to be crossed aren't filled in yet. I hope we get a lot more in the coming days, as it looks like there will be some unseasonably (like once in 50 years, the TV reports) warm wave coming in around the 10th or so....
