The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have measured another 12cm of fresh snow since yesterday morning. It is cold again this morning with ski areas reporting a temp of -13C to -15C on upper areas. It is more like -8C down at base early morning. Currently it's cloudy with light snow falling and visibility looks generally fairly decent. More steady snow incoming over the coming week, hopefully heavy at times (Friday?). I feel we could do with a few days of some decent snowfall numbers to properly get back on track. All lifts are opening as planned this morning. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -10C, 8cm snowfall, good visibility. Moiwa 800m: -11.4C, WSW5.7m/s, 10cm snowfall. Annupuri 1100m: -14.8C, W4.9m/s, 10cm snowfall. Mizuno no Sawa -13.3℃, NNW1.7m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -14.3C, WNW0.4m/s, 15cm snowfall. Hanazono#3: -11.5℃, N3.9m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNW8m/s, Kamui cape SW8m/s, 1020hPa, 1.7m waves. The isobars are spread out but still laid out in a wintery pressure distribution. A light wind is blowing above 1000m elevation and the snowdrifts are growing slowly. The tracked out slopes are recovering slowly. The overall avalanche risk is low in all elevation today. The tree-runs have also been more or less reset with new snow. Beware of old tracks and bushes. Sluffs are likely to slide in steep slopes. Avoid riding simultaneously and stopping at the bottom of the gullies. There are many people in the same gully. The Backbowl is not a safe place to ski during this time of the season. If a deep layer avalanche occur from leeward slopes above 1000m, the debris will sweep down the whole valley. It is not a place where beginners/visitors should be taken casually. Many cases of people falling into the creek at Moiwa Hell’s gate are being reported. It is much safer to go around near Annupuri’s Junior course and the connecting cat track. The Niseko Rules have been implemented for the sake of all resort users. Going out of bounds from the resort is still technically prohibited by the Japanese Chair lift operations regulations. The Niseko Rules has been set in place in order to protect the freedom to ski out there. Please understand the meaning of these Rules and respect them. Always be prudent in the mountains. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . The day started with blue patches which has now gone. The summit is in cloud but generally long range Viz is clear. The slopes remain very hard although there is quite a bit of soft stuff on top at the Chuo bowl. Again, it is softer on lower Uwanodai. A bit of wind higher up and at top of Uwanodai. It is cold today and can't say how much the terrain will soften in the daylight. Do be wary of the ice pebbles and rocks. They are not soft! A lack of people around except for pockets of ski schools. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Colder temperatures, some snow, and a hint of sun and blue skies in Myoko this morning. Once again we didn't get a massive snowfall (like we need, really), but about 15cm of nice, light fresh. It's been pretty humid, too, and everything is frosted: tree branches, power lines, car windows and doors. Lot of people out scraping windshields this morning and trying to crack open icy car doors. Other than that, a pretty nice day to be out on the hill. Probably a bit nicer snow than the hard-packed surfaces yesterday. The most snow being reported by a ski area since yesterday is 7cm at Tsugaike. Others are reporting within the range 0cm-5cm. It is quite cold which is good. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here After several days with no fresh snow, this is much better! 20cm+ on the ground giving us a nice new (and needed) layer. All of that came overnight. It is snowing (very) lightly as I write this and about -6C, with light snow forecast on/off over the next few days. Maybe enough to bring us more cm to report tomorrow. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -5C, light wind, 20cm snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -9.1℃, NNW3.3m/s, 20cm snowfall. Annupuri 1100m: -11.8C, N3.8m/s. Mizuno no Sawa: -10.8C, NNE1.2m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -11.4C, NNE5.1m/s, 20cm snowfall. Hanazono#3: -8.9℃, NNE2.4m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNE9m/s, Kamui cape N6m/s, 1014hPa, 1.9m waves. 20-30cm light crystal snowfall at pre-dawn. Cornices and snowdrifts are growing slowly above 800m, and rather rapidly above 1000m elevation due to the 10+m/s, NE wind. Shallow avalanches caused by ski-stimulation are likely to occur at knolls and leeward slopes under cornices above 800m. Do not drop simultaneously, traverse across steep slopes or gather at the bottom of the gullies. Gates are scheduled to open. Please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. Rough and firm layer is lying underneath the soft snow, ride carefully. 50cm thick surface slab avalanches are expected in 1000m areas of the Backbowl sidewalls, Osawa cornice slopes, Mikaeri Bowl and East ridge. It is highly recommended to stay away from these areas. The snow in the tree-runs is good, but still shallow. Beware of hidden stumps and tree-bombs. Winter avalanches occur when wind-affected snow slabs collapse with stimulation. Do not ski leeward knolls and steep slopes on a windy day. Have you switched your beacon on? Do you carry a shovel, probe and a rope? Safety is never guaranteed in winter sports, but most accidents can be avoided if everyone is careful enough. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 209cm Posted on Monday 16th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . The snow last night, though small but with large flakes, was very welcome. The slopes are hard still but the powder on top makes all the difference. It should soften up during the daylight (indeed Uwanodai is already softening up) and especially if the sunny patches appear this afternoon. The mist higher up moves up and down the mountain and is not constant. You can still see though. There is a bit of wind at the summit. Wind may make an appearance on the upper slopes during the latter half of the day. The slope down from the summit is mostly 'ice-burns' but there are softer patches on the sides to get an edge into. Beginners may still not enjoy the experience and may wish to save their thigh muscles by coming back down in the gondola to Utopia. Nice carving on Paradise but top tip for the morning is the Chuo bowl where there is thicker fresh snow and it is noticeably softer. The frosted trees are back but sadly the monsters are gone. I really wonder if they'll be back this season. Here's hoping Friday's forecasted dump is a good one along with the winds anticipated which actually form them. The snow is not expected to continue and the weather for the day will be mainly cloudy. The temperature is -9c and will top out at -5c. There is some low cloud over the mountain but visibility overall is still okay. The wind is moderate. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . We do have some fresh snow this morning. Just a modest amount - Yakebitaiyama are reporting 5cm. That's not enough for a full reset, so it's a few cm on the hard surfaces. We do expect some more snow during the day today. Probably modest amounts. It is colder again now, so that is something of a relief, though still not usual mid-January cold. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . There is some snow falling out there, but not a lot yet. We got 2.5cm or so (this form only allows full numbers, so it will say 3), so I can for the first time report for our non-metric friends that we got one inch of snow overnight. It's very sticky snow, made up of lots of little needle-shaped crystals. Fun to do some snow gazing on your sleeve while riding the lifts.... Colder temperatures have come in as the offshore winds have swung back to the northwest. Good news as we try to keep the snowpack from slowly disappearing. Hope the cycle brings in more and bigger flakes soon!
