It is a cloudy/overcast kind of morning but seems quite bright and visibility generally looks decent. I can see some faint shades of light blue. Forecasts continue to look a bit milder and less snowy and so while I'll probably be able to report some fresh snow over the next several days, it will likely be smaller numbers. My observed snowfall for December so far stands at 238cm. I'll do my traditional monthly summary in the first few days of January. Thankfully, it was back to snow in the evening and this morning is a calm and fairly bright morning. It has started snowing lightly again. Ski area operations remain unchanged. The forecasts are all not showing much chance of snowfall, or at least anything significant, for the rest of the month. Lifts operating (planned): Gondola Number 1, pair lifts and quad. Runs open (planned): All the main runs should be open. Open tree runs: Rabbit and Heart. Looks like Garden might also be opening. More will open when there is enough snow. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A pleasant surprise this morning, with a nice fall of pretty heavy snow. Good for building up that base, right? Getting a little concerned about the snow conditions, so it's great to have any extra added. Looks like we could have a really big fall on New Year's Day, too; looking at the long forecast, and it could be rain leading into it, but I want to see some heavy, real Myoko-style stuff coming down. Sun and blue skies? Highly overrated, in my opinion (as regular readers know). Heavy snow, poor visibility, make those real skiers happy. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. A bit of an early report this morning, meaning I am a bit too early for some official information. We enjoyed some fine weather yesterday, but this morning I bring news of more fresh snow overnight - I have just measured 18cm of it, bringing the total this month to 221cm. I wonder how much I will be able to record this December? Just for fun, here's the numbers (my observed snowfall at base) from the last few years for the month of December: December snowfall (observed) 2023-2024 season: 221cm (*up until 26th December 2023) 2022-2023 season: 336cm 2021-2022 season: 307cm 2020-2021 season: 348cm 2019-2020 season: 207cm 2018-2019 season: 333cm 2017-2018 season: 406cm You can find that data, along with much more, on the Snowfall analysis tab of this report. It's really very interesting. Especially if you are a bit nerdy, like me. ;) Anyway, it should be a fine day. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -4C, light wind, 20cm snowfall in 12h. Moiwa Mikaeri 762m: -6C, low pressure snowfall 25cm, snowing. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -7.8C, ESE1.8m/s. Hanazono#3: -5.5C, NNE2.2m/s (max 12m/s), 30cm snowfall. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW18m/s, Kamui cape WSW14m/s, 1018hPa, 1.3m waves. The wind is strong on the sea as a low pressure approaches. Still relatively calm on the mountains as of 7am. 15-30cm low-pressure system snowfall throughout the range. Sluff slides are to be expected in open 30+° slopes even without the presence of weak layers when this type of snowfall reaches 50cm. These slides don’t run that fast (around 60kn/h) but are heavy. If you get caught in one, you may be able to escape by holding onto a tree. Notable slabs will start to form as the wind picks up, and would become the cause of surface slab avalanches (100+km/h) in gullies above 800m elevation. These are impossible to escape from. Keep an eye out on the future weather transition. Out of bounds skiing from the resort is not permitted yet. Don’t cross the ropes behind the back of ski patrols. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Today is another sunny day in Myoko. Yesterday it became overcast through the day with some very light snow falling (while the rain was pouring down in Joetsu City, the large city lower down and connecting to the north of Myoko City). The forecasts today were for something similar happening today, with cautions for avalanches (which are up every day on TV news) and rain and lightning later on, although that seems more likely lower down. There was also a forecast of unseasonably warm weather ahead — I think the weatherman's words were, "Once in 10 years" — so it's a little scary for the snow. There were some patches of dirt here and there on the slopes yesterday, mostly from a little too aggressive grooming. The Shibutoge lift is moving this morning and the Yamanokami lift is also open, so the connection between Ichinose and Yakebitaiyama is now up and running. Hurray! (I heard that Maruike would be open too, but as of 10am it is showing as closed on the official site). Slowly but surely, things are opening up - but we need another decent snowfall for much more to happen. I would like to be able to say that it is coming imminently, but we are going to have to be patient. There's not much snow on the forecast through the weekend. Early morning cloud, particularly a bunch of low clouds hovering across the valley, but that should clear fairly quickly and it should be another fine day with sunshine expected. We did get a little snow overnight, though it only amounted to 5-6cm reported by the ski area on top areas. The ski area is making a point of asking people not to venture out onto runs that are not yet officially open, citing various incidents. Let's keep to their 'rules'. Naski will, I know that. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Merry Christmas! Just a little (but particularly lovely) snowfall since yesterday. The sun is out as well this morning. Beautiful. The Free Ride Park at Hirafu opens from today. Little by little, things are gradually becoming available. By the way, if you are not in Niseko and your presents are late today, it is because Santa is probably staying on here in Niseko for some more gnarly turns. Can't blame him, of course. It should be a very fine morning! By the way. As I write this, Hanazono still has 25-30cm on their (apparently updated) United new snowfall data this morning. As that is the same as yesterday, I'm guessing it was overlooked. (Let's just say that it is extremely unlikely they got 30cm since yesterday). Sorry to mention this again, but I really wish that the ski areas put more care into those updates. SnowJapan even gets people writing in about the official ski area website and its sluggish updates - even though it's got nothing to do with us. And please do check out this next message... ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -9℃, 5cm snowfall in 12h, calm and good visibility. Moiwa Mikaeri 764m: -14℃, WSW54m/s, 180cm snowpack. Hirafu Hanazono: -9-9℃, NNE2.6m/s, Hanazono#3: -7℃, NW2.2m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape SW3m/s, Kamui cape WSW8m/s, 1022hPa, 0.9m waves. The atmospheric pressure gradient is flat and the mountain and the sea is calm. There are no notable snowfall or snowdrifts developments. The general avalanche risk is low. The phrase 'Do not duck the ropes' mentioned in the Niseko Rules, was created by vice-mayor of Niseko, Keita Yamamoto. This phrase is based on Niseko's experience that if one person goes through a rope, others will imitate it and accidents will eventually occur, and it has been used on awareness posters since 2010. Out of bounds skiing is not open yet, however there were two rescue missions yesterday, one in Yu no Sawa and one in O-sawa. The normalisation of entering strictly off-limits areas led to the tragic loss of a young Russian man in March last season. Is it really fun to ski behind the back of the ski patrols? Avalanche control using explosives will start in Mizuno no Sawa from today. Please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. This place is a ski area and the users are required to follow its rules.
