There is some low cloud hanging over some base areas, but that will surely quickly disappear. The sun is going to take control today and make everywhere look so very inviting. And, oh yes, lots of fresh snow too from yesterday. At 3pm yesterday the ski area was reporting 15cm of snowfall Hikage to top, and this morning there seems to be an additional 30cm. By my calculations, hold on, that's 45cm since yesterday on the mountain. My measurement adds up to 33cm. Sounds like Nozawa, right? Whatever, sounds great. Naski will be pleased. As will we all. And! We are still expecting a fair amount of snow from tonight through Tuesday. Hopefully we might get to see Skyline open sometime soon.... Mt Yotei is wearing a fetching cloud hat and the scenery all around is looking particularly beautiful. Ah, don't you just love it. Oh yes, 7cm of fresh snowfall too at my measuring point close to Hirafu base. Hirafu, the ski area, is reporting up to 20cm on mountain. A fine start to the weekend. Such clear weather probably won't last too long so let's enjoying. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 5am: -7°, calm, 10cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: -16.8°, NNE4.4m/s, 15cm new snow, snow drift development, light winds, good visibility. Mikaeri 764m: -12°, light winds, good, bad visibility, snow depth 250cm. Annupuri 1100m: -13°, NNW1.9m/s(max W15m/s @ 4am), good visibility, course condition thin. Village upper Mizuno no Sawa: -11.6°, NNW3.1m/s. Hanazono 1000m: -12.6°, N3.2m/s, 15cm new snow. Hanazono 3 : -9.4°, NNE3.3m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:ENE7m/s. Kamui Cape NE2m/s, 1010hPa, wave 1.6m. Although yesterdays low pressure snowfall is stabilising, strong westerly winds from midnight to dawn caused rapid cornice and snow drift development on the Mikaeri side, which are prone to collapse and cause block avalanches. Gate 8 is expected to be open. Yesterday's tracks remain below 700m, however above 800m is mostly reset. Base on data and observations the general avalanche risk is low and the snow conditions are good. Do not traverse under cornices or wait around in the valley bottoms. Accidents don't happen if nobody is there. Do not enter Haru no Taki or YunoSawa Strictly Off Limits areas. If one person enters, others will follow and an accident will eventually happen. We strongly urge local people living in the area to respect Niseko rules. Avalanche accidents often occur during periods of wind and snow. This is because snowdrifts size increases faster than the stabilisation rate. Be careful on leeward steep slopes during windy and snowy conditions, there could be an avalanche waiting to happen. The snow eventually stopped around 5pm. This morning there are some (fast moving) clouds around, but increasingly looking like it is clearing and the views up at Chuo already look very nice; though there is a little snow still falling now in places. The official site says it is -79.7C at the summit, but I think that is a typo. It is a cold morning... not that cold! ;) Tomorrow might be fine with some cloud with more snow forecast early week. Visibility looks much more limited up on the top Yamabiko area, where 30cm of fresh snowfall is being reported by the ski area. The snowfall is probably going to continue on and off into early next week, perhaps the heaviest due around Monday. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 5am: -2°, light winds, 10cm wet new snow. Moiwa 800m: -10.5, °NW1.7m/s(max S12m/s @ 12am), poor visibility. Mikaeri 764m: -4°, strong west wind, bad visibility, increasing snowpack. Annupuri 1100m: -5.7°, W3.0m/s(max S20m/s @ 12am), visibility 400m, 15cm wet snow. Village 1000: -4.5°, WNW2.6m/s. Hanazono 1000m: -5.1°, E2.9m/s(max S22m/s @ 12am). Hanazono 3 : -3.2°, NE2.6m/s. A front passed through around midnight with strong southerly winds and wet snow causing cornice and snowdrift development. The wind shifted to the west at dawn、light wind and snow continue above 800m. Hanazono Gate 9 is expected to open today. Other gates are still to be decided. Please respect the patrols decisions. A correction to yesterdays information: The avalanche reported 2 days days ago was on the SE open slope of Chisenupuri, not Nitonupuri, however still rider induced. During periods of strong wind and snow, fresh slabs (drifts, thick snow sheets) can easily break regardless whether there is a weak layer or not. Do not ride these slopes carelessly. From data and observations, there is a possibility of avalanche under cornices and around knolls today as well. The snow changes every day. Do not hang around in creek gullies or the bottom of valleys, these are an avalanche path. Do not traverse the top of steep slopes, it can cause an accident. Avalanches are a natural phenomenon, but accidents are caused by humans. This information is provided to prevent accidents in Niseko. It wasn't snowing a little earlier, but there are some lovely flakes falling just now, along with a bit of sun shining through too. Lovely! Forecasts are still looking very snowy. The very pleasing consistency that we have been enjoying looks set to continue. :) -------- After my light-hearted comment about the Louis Vuitton Niseko Winter Resort Pop-up Store at the base of Hanazono the day before yesterday, someone asked what I have against Louis Vuitton. The answer to that is, I suppose, absolutely nothing. It's just not my, er, bag. In my mind, that kind of thing has nothing to do with the sport I love and/or the place I love. It's just one of those signs of 'big money' taking over, isn't it? And I do have conflicting feelings about that. Perhaps it is inevitable as this destination continues to evolve quickly, but that doesn't mean I have to like it or be part of it. That said, if you enjoy such things, that's cool too. We all have different things we love, don't we? (Toast). I do kind of wonder how many people reading this report might take some moments off from pounding the powder to pop on over to buy expensive 'travel luggage, leather goods, ready-to-wear, shoes, accessories, fragrances, watches and jewellery'. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -12.2C, SSE3.4m/s. Hanazono#3: -9.7C, SSW1.8m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape WSW5m/s, average less than 10m/s in 12h. Kamui cape SW11m/s, 1015hPa, 1.0m waves. Winds are weakening under the high pressure system. Deeper layers are starting to consolidate and stabilise. Hirafu No.3 gate, Fujiwara No. 4 gate, Hanazono No. 5 gate will be open with a time gap today. Gates No. 1 & 2 are still closed. Please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. The avalanche risks remain high on the slopes like Kozan no sawa side walls at 1100m elevation, O-sawa (Annupuri bowl) cornice slopes at 1000m elevation area, and Higashi-One (East ridge) steep slopes under the cornices. Do not traverse from Hirafu to reach Osawa. Osawa gates are not open. Top chair lift in Annupuri is not in operation, so you will not be able to return to Hirafu. Do not traverse knolls and cornice slopes. Avalanche is a natural phenomenon, but accidents occur when people are involved. Stay away from the gully bottoms. Those steep slopes in gullies are very likely to collapse. If you fall and get buried, you may suffocate. Be careful. There was an avalanche in Nitonupuri yesterday. Regardless of the presence or absence of a weak layer, avalanches are likely to occur during a snowstorm as it forms new snowdrifts that can break easily. It won't be windy too and so should be a really nice day to be out on the slopes. And then we will be getting more snow again from tomorrow. Very fine, powdery snow was on the ground today. The snow actually continued through the day, although the flakes got smaller and smaller over time. Good snow conditions on the hill now, though. All the early-season thin spots are now well covered. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I am pleased to report more fresh snow again this morning. This morning my measurement (24 hours since 8:30am yesterday) was 16cm. Very nice. Forecasts show consistent snowfall across the coming week too. It is a cold morning and visibility is varied but ranging from OK to poor depending on where you are. It seems windy out there and the Annupuri gondola isn't going to be open as scheduled because of that. The top Hirafu lift too and, I suppose, possibly more. Some fine person asked about the top Jumbo Number 4 pair lift at Niseko Annupuri, wondering why it is not yet open. It is a good question. As far as I can tell, up until a few days ago, the reason was 'not enough snow'. But after the last few days of heavy snow, the reason changed to that there is 'too much snow'. Doh! I imagine the ski area will be trying to open it as soon as they feel comfortable, and I have heard that it might be open by this weekend. But I don't know if that is the official thinking, and of course, the opening will, in the end, depend on weather and snow. Hopefully, pesky winds won't try to kick up a fuss. (Hey, I know I have mentioned wind in todays report, but I feel like I haven't had to talk much about pesky winds this season so far. That's a good thing, of course). ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -8C, 5cm/12h snowfall. Moiwa800m: -18.9C, NW9.5m/s, Snowdrifts 100-150cm in 12h, moderate visibility. Mikaeri 764m: -11C, NW15m/s, 250cm snowpack and snowdrifts developing. Annupuri 1000m: -15C, WNW7.0m/s. Niseko Village 1000m: -13.6C, WNW7.7m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -14.2C, SSE3.8m/s. Hanazono#3: -9.2C, ENE3.2m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW16m/s, Kamui cape W13m/s (max17@1:25am), 1011hPa, 2.2m waves. Isobars remains moderately tight and westerly wind & snow are persisting on the seas and the mountains. Cornices and snowdrifts are still slowly developing in slopes above 800m elevation. Avalanche risk remains high in leeward slopes in the Backbowl and Nishi-One (west ridge), O-sawa (Annupuri bowl) 1000m cornice slopes, Higashi-One (East ridge) cornice slopes. Crusts, wind-ripples and snowdrifts are present in tree-runs below 800m. The avalanche risk is lowering, however traversing knolls or under cornices in above mentioned slopes could trigger an 80cm thick surface slope avalanche. Moiwa gate#6 & 10 are scheduled to open. Gate#3, 4 & 5 are being prepared to open tomorrow (11th). Please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. Mountain activities are inherently dangerous. There has been over 10 casualties caused by avalanches in this small mountain and nobody should forget or ignore that fact. Respect the Rules. Stay away from avalanche paths. Always be vigilant. The snow in the trees is in good shape. Beware of frostbites.
