- Myoko Now: Wednesday 7th February 2024
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this season 651cm Posted on Wednesday 7th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A nice additional few centimeters of very light, snowflaky snow overnight; it's sunny with some high, thin clouds and some snow flakes still trickling down from some of those clouds out there. A nice day to be out on the slopes, really, with lots of white trees and some pretty good views. Had an interesting talk with our local policeman, after pulling a couple of rental cars out of ice and wet snow: really think twice about renting a car to come to Myoko! Our enforcer of the law talked about helping some people with summer tires; the two I was helping at least had snow tires, but no 4WD. So the front wheels spin like mad and the car goes nowhere. Seems like the rental agencies take the reservation for a 4WD, they just can't keep the reservation (Seinfeld reference, for those of a certain age). Well, they sometimes helpfully throw in some chains, which are useless and difficult and won't get you on the freeway unless they're over snow tires and maybe not even then. I'm not sure, because I'm ready (4WD, snow tires, all the gear, the mighty wet-work rubberized gloves). Public transport is great in Japan! Send your bags straight to your hotel, or to the airport on your return home! Cloudy with blue sky and the sun shining down on us at times, though forecasts do say there is a chance of light snow today and maybe tomorrow too. Though if it does, it's not the kind that will bring us much in terms of cm. Friday looks to be more sunny and possibly Saturday too, before some more snow going into Sunday. - Niseko Now: Tuesday 6th February 2024
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 740cm Posted on Tuesday 6th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have to be early and quick this morning. It's cloudy (some blue sky mostly away from the mountain), with light snow currently falling, and it is quite bright. I guess that the ski areas will be able to open as planned this morning. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -8℃, 2cm snowfall, calm. Moiwa 800m:-11.4℃, NNE3.2m/s, small development of cornices. Annupuri 1000m: -12.8℃, N3.1m/s, light dusting. Village 1000m: -11.5℃, SSE0.8m/s. Hhirafu Hanazono 1000m: -12.4℃, NNW7.6m/s, slight snowfall. Hanazono#3: -10.1℃, NNE2.6m/s, calm. Coastal data: Benkei cape E6m/s, Kamui cape ENE4m/s, 1023hPa, 0.9m waves. The atmospheric pressure gradient is flat under a high-pressure system. There are no notable developments of cornices and snowdrifts. Evaluating observations data, the avalanche risk is low in Niseko and the surrounding mountains. A relatively strong NE wind is forecasted above 1200m elevation. It will involve some light snowfall, so be careful of sluffs in steep open slopes. It could sweep and bury you. The mountain is tracked out. Beware of falling and hitting trees. An accident occurred in Higashi-One yesterday and the Hirafu ski patrol went for search and rescue. We're all hoping for a quick recovery. This information is issued as an accident prevention measure in the backcountry area of Niseko. Off-piste skiing is permitted here through the opening/closing system of the gates, however the area outside the gate is not a controlled environment and danger will always be present. All winter sports are inherently dangerous, however most accidents can be avoided by being precautious. Do not put too much confidence on your skills and knowledge, make conservative decisions in the mountains. It looks like most people have started to wear beacons recently. We are grateful for your appreciation and your respect for the Niseko Rules. Have a nice day. ------------------ Individual ski area information for Tuesday 6th February 2024 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 36cm Snowfall at base this season 645cm Posted on Tuesday 6th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Pretty nice fall of fresh snow yesterday and into the evening. It started just as I was finishing yesterday's report; it started slow but fell pretty steadily through the day. Not a massive addition to our snowpack, but no complaints either! We have had some more encouraging figures from the resorts (although many seem to be too busy today digging to report!), because it was getting pretty thin in some places, especially to the south and east (no, the snow does not fall evenly across the whole area). Today, as I'm writing, fog has just come in. It almost looked like it would clear a bit there around 7 am, but we're in the soup suddenly. Colder air coming in from the north? It could keep snowing, so I hope so. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 22cm Snowfall at base this season 412cm Posted on Tuesday 6th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. Snow yesterday and overnight has eased off this morning leaving us with cloudy skies and generally decent visibility. At 3:20am (!), Yakebitaiyama reported 20cm of fresh snowfall. Okushiga Kogen and Kumanoyu have also both reported 20cm this morning and my measurement is in line with those. So we should have some refreshed runs this morning. There is a chance of some more light snow through tomorrow though we shouldn't expect much, and a chance of clearer skies at the end of the week. Someone asked how can the snow depth at Ichinose Family be 120cm when it is 270cm at Takamagahara Mammoth, when they are basically next to each other. Good question and... I don't know. That Mammoth number is curious. The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. All of the ski areas in Shiga Kogen are open. The ski area has reported up to 40cm of snow (Uenotaira) since yesterday afternoon (and there was a bit before that too, though I missed the actual numbers). Nice. And there's been a very decent amount across the mountain and in lower areas too. I like being able to report that. Naski looks pleased, too. The snow has eased off for now and while clouds remain it feels quite bright. Down at base, anyway. Almost as if the sun might break through. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 19cm Snowfall at base this season 739cm Posted on Monday 5th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. And what a really beautiful Monday morning it is, too. We don't get many days like this here. Blue skies, sunny, good and cold... stunning! Making it even better is the 20cm or so of fresh snow since yesterday. Last night I can't remember expecting such weather this morning, but... thank you. Today is indeed a very good day to be here and there are going to be a lot of excited people out there today. Let's appreciating with safety heart. (Tomorrow might be sunny too, with the next snow due later in the week). ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -9℃, 20cm snowfall and calm. Moiwa 800m: -10.5℃, 20cm snowfall, snowdrift accumulation, good visibility. Mikaeri 764m: -13℃, light wind, good visibility, snowdrifts development. Annupuri 1000m: -11.7℃, N4m/s. Village 1000m: -10.6℃, N4.5m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -11.1℃, E54.5m/s. Hanazono#3: -9.1℃, calm. Coastal data: Benkei cape calm, Kamui cape E5m/s, 1025hPa, 0.6m waves. The atmospheric pressure gradient is flat. Calm morning at sea and the mountains. Good visibility. Looking at this morning's observations and weather data, the avalanche risk is low. All gates are scheduled to open. Seek the ski patrol’s advice at the gates. Outside the gate is not the resort anymore. If you blindly follow someone else’s track, you might get lost or fall in the creek. One injury could ruin your vacation. Please have a read through the Niseko Rules flyer, these should be available at the ticket office or hotel receptions. Again, the area outside the gate is not the resort anymore. It is not mandatory to carry avalanche rescue gear, however it is highly recommended to do so. It may save your life, as well as your buddies’ too. The mountain will be crowded today, don’t stay at the bottom of the gullies, and be careful not to trigger a slide at the top of a slope. The snow condition is fantastic. The latest Geto Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning. So it was more of the cloud, light snow and wind mix yesterday. Seems less windy this morning and it is keeping cold. Not a whole lot of snow on the latest forecasts, I'm afraid, making it more difficult to know what to write! If we get snow it will be more of a case of just a little here and there, rather than a huge dumpage... Lifts operating (planned): All scheduled lifts operating. The Number 2 gondola does not operate on weekdays. Runs open (planned): Most of the main runs should be open with some restrictions. Scheduled to open tree runs: All should be open apart from Extreme and Cascade. All subject to change due to conditions. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 609cm Posted on Monday 5th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A tiny dusting of snow overnight and another day of high, gray skies. Looks like we could see some snow coming in tonight, though, and maybe for a few days. That would be a nice change from the current short cycles of snow then sun, cold then warm. Those snowpack figures are getting pretty low again for some of the resorts... And it has just started to snow, as I was finishing up and ready to push the submit button. The peaks have gone from being visible to now being obscured by fog or snow.
