The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's snowing again today, thank goodness, although not a lot has fallen. The plows actually woke me up around 3:30 am (it's the sound that tells me that action may shortly be required), but they were just cleaning up the washboard that was our road yesterday. It's coming down pretty nicely at the moment, so let's hope there's more on the way. Look at some of the snow depth figures! Got an interesting message yesterday (via the site contact form): Attention: Myoko snow reporter I have been part of a group of Australian skiers visiting Myoko since 2015 (except corona). We love your mountain but are concerned about the changes which we observe. Major development plans for the mountain, new international style hotels. Too many visitors will turn your wonderful mountain into just another ski resort. Long live Sugi! And it was signed (in katakana) Robert. Thanks so much for that; yes, we share the concern. I'm lucky enough to be on some advisory groups for the prefecture, and my main message is, if we lose our "Myoko-ness," we'll lose the reason our best guests want to come here. And (unlike some of the newer people here), I like living in Japan; I understand that there are good reasons why locals do what the locals do. And I think Robert feels it too. Change will happen, but I hope we can build better, not just bigger. And, this is a skier's mountain, really, with a lot of really pristine nature just behind us. At 7:20am Yakebitaiyama were reporting 5cm of fresh snow and Kumanoyu was reporting 1cm at 7:00am. It's generally a case of a limited fresh layer of snow on hard runs early morning. There should be more over the coming few days and it should be keeping cold. As I type it is snowing lightly but there is sunshine peeking through clouds around the mountain too. There's a fair amount of blue sky and sun over towards Mt Yotei. Tomorrow a national holiday in Japan, giving many people another 3-day long weekend. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: 10cm snowfall, calm. Moiwa 800m: -17.4℃, NNW8.9m/s, cornice and snowdrift development up to 50cm. Mikaeri 764m: -10℃, N3.5m/s, visibility improved. Annupuri 1100m: -14.3℃, WNW5.2m/s. Village 1000m: -12.8℃, NW4.5m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -13.2℃, SW4.6m/s, 15cm snowfall. Hanazono 800m: -11.1℃, N4.8m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNW12m/s, Kamui cape W7m/s, 1023hPa, 1.2m waves. New cornices above 800m elevation break instantly, and snowdrifts break easily with small impact. Surface slab avalanches are likely to occur on the 40°slopes in the morning. Avoid stimulating knolls. Avalanches at this time of the season tend to occur by breaking snowdrifts (triggered by humans) or natural phenomena such as collapsing of cornices. In any case, accidents only occur when people get caught in it. Some good snow overnight but watch out for hard snow underneath. There was an accident with a broken femur in Fujiwara no Sawa yesterday. Mind your speed, and make reasonable turns. Avoid riding simultaneously on the steep open slopes. Dangerous. Do not stay in the gully bottoms. Gates are expected to open. Please listen to the patrol’s instructions. It is quite crowded on the groomers too. Ride according to your skills. We were hopeful for good news this morning and I am happy to report a layer of fresh snow... up to 20cm on upper areas of the mountain (reported by the ski area) and a fair amount closer to too. 50+cm would have been better, but this fresh is very welcome! Conditions should feel nice and fresh this morning. :) The snow has stopped at the moment and it is just cloudy but hopefully we will be getting more in the coming days. The snow started earlier than expected, but not before all the windshields in town got a good coating of ice as the rain changed to ice pellets late yesterday afternoon. Not a whole lot of new snow yet, but it's still coming down pretty steadily, so hopefully we'll get some more good cover on the breakable crust below. Looks like more snow fell on the northern resorts than on the more southern and eastern areas; it is really getting low at Kurohime and Tangram, so I hope we see some good regional coverage in the coming days! It's a modest amount, for sure, but it is most welcome and it is good to feel colder conditions too. All being well, there's more coming over the coming several days. Ski lifts all seem to be opening as scheduled too, so we should be able to check out how much there is across the mountain. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: 3cm snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -17.7℃, NNW8.7m/s, 5cm snowfall with snowdrifts up to 40cm. Mikaeri 764m: -10℃, N4m/s, good visibility. Annupuri1000m: -14.6℃, WNW7.1m/s, snowdrifts developing. Village 1000m: -13℃, WNW5.0m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -14.6℃, NNW3.1m/s, 5cm snowfall. Hanazono 800m: -11.3℃, NNW6.6m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNW15m/s, Kamui cape W9m/s, 1027hPa, 1.7m waves. The atmospheric pressure gradient is flattening and the wind is calming down on the sea and the mountains, however snowdrifts are slowly accumulating in areas above 900m elevations, slabs up to 40cm thickness are forming in knoll terrains. These new snowdrifts are starting to stabilize, however avalanche risk will remain highly considerable in areas such as Backbowl sidewalls, Nishi-One (west ridge) south aspects and Mikaeri Bowl. Gates are scheduled to open. Please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. Do not duck the rope to access Fujiwara no Sawa, or strictly off limits Haru no taki and Yu no sawa area. You'll lose your pass and your trust. Long awaited new snow has arrived, a little insufficient but better than not. Ski carefully. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Another few cm of snowfall this morning and some sunny skies to start the weekend. It's more shades of light blue than deep blue early on. Sun is expected across the weekend with some warmer temperatures during the day, particularly tomorrow and Monday. It will be getting colder once again from Tuesday, and hopefully we'll get back to enjoying some fresh snow then too. Anyway, it's time for some toast. I hope you have a fine Saturday wherever you are. It should be fun! ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6am: 3cm crystal snow in last 12hrs. Moiwa 800m: -10.5°, NW1.5m/s, 3cm new snow, snowdrift development. Mikaeri 764m: -12°, N1.2m/s, 5cm new snow. Annupuri 1100m: -10.9°, WNW6.1m/s. Niseko Village 1000m: -9.9°, W2.4m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: SSE4m/s. Kamui Cape SW6m/s, 1025hPa, wave 0.8m.
