The latest Niseko Now report can be found here We have a very Monday morning surprise with some fairly heavy snowfall overnight and 14cm of snow on the ground. Wonderful! What's more, as I write this, it is still snowing - and actually quite heavily in some places... less so in others. We are not expecting any/much looking forward and forecasts say there might be sunshine today; and possibly quite soon. It's not as windy this morning, so I expect ski areas to be able to open as planned this morning. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -4℃, 15cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: -7.5℃, NNW6.7, 20m/s at midnight. Mikaeri 764m: -6℃, NW3.4m/s, 15cm new snow, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -9.5℃, NNW3.5m/s, 20m/s at midnight, 20cm new snow. Strong northerly wind was blowing on the slopes over 800m elevation, cornices and snowdrifts have developed. Snowdrifts are starting to stabilise however the avalanche risk continues on the slopes over 1100m elevation at Kohzan no sawa sidewalls, and cornice slopes at Osawa in the morning. Gate will be open at a later time. Do not enter those areas mentioned above. Snow is excellent and deep in some areas. Outside of the gates are not ski resorts. Be prudent. Do not duck ropes. That means it is very difficult to get a good measurement this morning. There are spots ranging from 5cm to 23cm, so we're going to go with what the ski area is reporting too... 10cm. Keep in mind that there will be more than that in places, perhaps quite a bit more. A good thing! The storm has passed and it should be a fine morning. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It was pretty blustery through the day yesterday and into the night, but that seems like something that was happening all over central Japan. Lots of tents and trucks blowing over; dirt getting carried off of plowed fields, that kind of thing. We had snow falling through the day, too, but it really didn't accumulate at all (so just a little figure there at the bottom to acknowledge some snowfall). Could we really be getting more snow over the next two days? Maybe more winds, too, especially Thursday. And then some rain, and then warm and sunny on the weekend? - Niseko Now: Monday 18th March 2024
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 865cm Posted on Monday 18th March 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. It might not be the most lovely fluffy snow, (I'm being kind), but we do have a bit this morning. I have measured just under 3cm since yesterday, though some of that is already gone. Hirafu and the Avalanche Report are both reporting up to 10cm. It should be getting colder and all being well we might get some more by tomorrow. Alas, it is windy and the top lifts on hold this morning, as is the gondola at Annupuri. ------------------ エース第2クワッド(センターフォー) The snappily named 'Ace Number 2 quad (Center Four)' lift at Niseko Grand Hirafu ski area was apparently the first quad lift to open in Japan. It opened in 1985 and will have its last day on Sunday 31st March 2024. Otsukaresama deshita for 38 years of service! To commemorate the end of its working life, Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu is holding a charity auction through 31st March to sell off up to 30 of the 4-seater lift chairs. (An unspecified part of) the proceeds will be donated to the ‘Protect Our Winters Japan’ campaign. It doesn’t seem like you need to promise how to use it if you win, but you need to promise to not re-sell it and to ‘treat it well’ considering its heritage. The official blurb says that some companies wanted chairs to repurpose as benches, etc. I’d go to the official site if you were interested in these things. On the related subject, and as mentioned before, a shiny new gondola is going to replace the quad lift. Work on the new gondola is going to start on the lower section of Ace area from 1st April, meaning some of those lower areas will be closed to skiers and snowboarders from that date. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -1℃, wet snow 10cm. Moiwa 800m: -3℃, NNW12.5m/s (20m/s@4am). Mikaeri 764m: -3℃NW5.1m/s, blizzard. Annupuri 1100m: -5.7℃, NNW7.5m/s (20m/s@4am). Hirafu Hanazono: -5.3℃, NNW17.7m/s (25m/s@4am). Hanazono 800m: -3.2℃, NNE0.6m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape 13m/s, Kamui cape ENE5m/s, 998hPa, 2.2m waves. Evaluating all data and observation results, the avalanche risk is extremely high in leeward slopes under 800m elevation where cornices and snowdrifts have drastically developed. The peak of the storm was at around 4am and even if the wind had calmed down now, it will take all day for the snow slabs to stabilise. Most gates will be kept shut today. The chair lifts might operate, but please refrain from ducking the ropes to access the out of bounds areas. It is a dangerous day today and completely different conditions fro yesterday. The snow is wet, but is not bad for this time of the season. Beware of overspeeding and hitting trees. The wave height of the Sea of Japan is also rising. Act wisely. ------------------ Individual ski area information for Monday 18th March 2024 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 1003cm Posted on Monday 18th March 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Wind overnight, with rain turning to snow by this morning. Not much snow, really, although it's coming down pretty steadily at the moment (and stopping as I put in the info below—going to be an on-and-off snow day). We're starting to see some of the lifts closing already, with Suginohara down to two lifts only, and Tangram at three. The wind is gusting from time to time, so lift closures are possible (the Kumado No. 1 at Akakura Onsen is closed, but may run depending on the wind; Lotte Arai's Zendana lift likewise, it seems). The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. It might be the second half of March, but it's like a blizzard out there as I write this. Blowing winds and light to moderate snow that is getting blown about. Cold, too. Tomorrow might see a break in the snow but there's 'heavy snow' due Wednesday. It's mad, but I love it! Wind is affecting quite a few ski lifts this morning so limited operations as this weather does its thing.
