The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . I am at Okushiga Kogen early this morning and it is snowing quite heavily as I write this report. Nice big flakes, too. Not that much to report since yesterday, but if it keeps snowing like this it should be quickly building up. Probably worth mentioning that is seems to be snowing the most over here for the moment... less so back in Hasuike. Other ski areas are telling us snowy tales of between 5 and 20cm across the mountains. Night skiing starts at Hakuba Goryu from this coming Saturday (21st December). At one time there used to be much more 'nighta' on offer in the region, so it's good to see Goryu still keeping that going! I have said similar in previous recent reports, but surely... surely... with all the snow we have received, come Saturday, more lifts and ski runs will be opening up. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here There has been another 20+cm of fresh snowfall to report to you this morning, with much of that coming yesterday and some more overnight. The snowfall is set to continue. I hope this isn't getting boring! It is very exciting to be excited about all the regular fresh snow, but always keep in mind the dangers out there. No news to report regarding the opening of the top lifts yet. In just over a week, Santa and his friends will be making their annual visit to Niseko. I think they might be tempted to stay for a while. If they can afford it, of course! ;) ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -8℃, 5cm new snow in last 12hrs, 40cm in last 24hr, good visibility, heavy snow, no wind slabs. Moiwa800m: -11.2℃, WNW4.2m/s,15cm new snow, 160cm snowdrifts, minor snowdrift development. Hanazono 1000m: -13.6℃, ESE2.6m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NNW12m/s, Kamui Cape W7m/s, 1015hPa, 1.4m waves. Mikaeri Electric Tower 750m: -10℃, WNW2.7m, visibility 1000m, snow depth 160cm. The winter pressure system has eased and snowdrifts below 1200m are compacted and stable. The snow is wind-driven and somewhat dense and heavy. The avalanche risk continues above 1200m on 35 degree slopes where snowdrifts have formed slabs. Slab density is inconsistent due to variations in the strength of the snow storm, Beware of rider induced avalanches valleis above 800m. Observations and data indicate that the overall risk of avalanches is low. Many avalanche accidents on the mountains on the Sea of Japan side are caused by the collapsing snowdrifts that develop rapidly during periods of wind and snow. The best way to avoid accidents is to stay out of avalanche paths which run down the valley bottoms. Avalanches are a natural phenomenon, but accidents happen because there are people there. Snow clouds tend to form over the Sea of Japan. Beware of sudden changes in weather. Accidents can be prevented by being cautious. Hanazono is reporting an impressive 30-35cm of fresh snow this morning, and it looks like that northern area might have received the most cm. Still, I have measured almost 25cm, and at the rate it is falling that will continue to rise. (Well, I've cleared my measuring point, but you know what I mean). Generally limited visibility this morning with the snow, though looking at the various cams it appears that visibility is actually fairly good in some places. Feels like that might well be temporary. When I was out just before it didn't feel too windy and at the start of the day, all of the lifts appear to be opening as planned. With more snow expected, I wonder when the top lifts will get moving. I'm guessing this coming weekend might be the target, but we'll see. I see that the scaffolding has suddenly gone from the structure by the base lifts at Hanazono, revealing a surprisingly small building. (Is it a Yurt?) My first impression was that it looks like a big bolt. Or perhaps a Mario warp pipe. But I can see what looks like the words Blue Label written on the side, so can probably now guess what it is. They'll probably officially tell us all about it soon, but it is looking like I'll have to find somewhere else to buy my new bag. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -8℃, 25cm new snow in last 12hrs, mild storm. Moiwa800m: -11.8℃, NNW5.6m/s　(2am:20m/s). Hanazono 1000m: -14.1℃, SSE3.4m/s(2am:20m/s), snowpack growing. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NW16m/s(2am:NNW20m/s), Kamui Cape WNW12m/s, 1009hPa, 2.3m waves. Mikaeri Electric Tower 750m -11℃, WNW4.4m, visibility 500m The winter pressure pattern continues, blizzards on the seas and mountains peaked at 2am. There has been rapid cornice and snowdrift development above the 800m tree line. Snow drifts at 1150m on the south side have grown significantly due to the northerly wind and snow, snowdrifts are unstable and weak layers will break easily. High avalanche risk in the morning. Scale: 80cm deep broken surface; fracture surface: temperature gradient layer on December 15th. Type: surface-occurring surface avalanche. Until the weather improves and the snowdrifts are consolidated and stabilized, it is best not to ski on 30-degree leeward slopes above 1000m. The situation is the same for the surrounding mountains that are affected by weather from the Sea of ​​Japan. The undergrowth has mostly filled in, but it is still unsuitable for skiing. In the forest, snow is a little heavy and wind packed. But not too bad. It's deep, so be careful of falls and suffocation. Accidents are more likely to occur on snowstorm days. Be careful on high-wind days (18+m/s) when cornices develop drastically. Whether there are notable weak layers or not, these quickly growing windloaded slabs are extremely unstable and can slide. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Naeba/ Just a few cm of fresh snow to report. This morning we can see some clearer sky. It is calm with hardly any wind so it should be a good day to be out there. Ski area operations remain the same for the moment. More snow is expected mid week so hopefully come next weekend more of the mountain will open. Loads of snow this morning with as much as 80cm being reported by the ski area over the last 24 hours; official snow depth up top as got up to 220cm! This is mid-winter style weather now, and hopefully it will no be long until some tree run courses get open. Runs open (planned): All main courses now open, some with restrictions Tree run courses not yet open Official snow depth (reported by the ski area): 220cm (top) 135cm (base) Cumulative snowfall this season (reported by the ski area): 550cm Other information: Night skiing is scheduled for weekends and holidays from 14th December 2024 through 24th February 2025. The Number 2 Gondola is scheduled to normally only operate on weekends, holidays and over New Year (28th December through 5th January).
