  • Furano Now: Sunday 9th May 2021

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Furano region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 649cm Posted on Sunday 9th May 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . The 2020-21 ski season has come to an end in Furano so it is a good time for a little reflection. The season will mostly be remembered for the effect of Covid on visitor numbers to the resort. While overnight guest numbers were significantly impacted there were still visitors to the resort, as well as locals and day trippers from other towns and cities in Hokkaido. The carparks at base area were typically full on weekends and public holidays. In terms of snow, it turned out to be quite a high snowfall year with a total of 644cm of snow recorded. It is important to note this is measured in the Kitanomine ski village and not on the mountain itself. The amount of new snow on the ski resort itself will almost always be significantly higher than the daily New Snowfall number. Looking at the months in terms of snowfall; November had lower than usual snowfall at 48cm, December was exceptional at 241cm, January was a little lower than normal at 94cm, February was one of the highest snowfalls of recent years at 178cm, and March was also a good month at 83cm. The snow is all melted away around the resort now, and the brown under the snow is now turning into the vivid green of spring season. Furano Now will be back later in the year around November to start reporting in the build up to the 2021-22 winter. Here's hoping borders will have reopened by then and we are on the way back to normality.
