The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. I'm pretty sure we were - are? - expecting sun this morning, but it has been a very cloudy (gassy) morning so far. It feels like it might be getting lighter, so perhaps we will get our clearer skies sometimes soon. This weekend is the last of the season for a bunch of ski areas in the area - they are going to just about manage to make it! Ground is becoming predominant in most lower areas now with a noticeable change this week. Snow cover in higher elevations still remains good. Weather should generally be fine over the weekend. (However, see: this morning for when forecasts get it wrong). It will almost definitely be rather warm. --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 150cm Notes: Special night skiing is planned for 28th March and 4th April The Southern Area, the lift connection with Ishiuchi Maruyama and the downhill run are now closed for the season The Central Area and the main part of the Northern Area remain open The planned closing date is Wednesday 6th May ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 100cm Notes: Part open The top connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now closed for the season Floodlit night skiing on Fridays and Saturdays until 28th March (until 8:00pm) The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April ----------------------- Iwappara Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 75cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th March (until 7:00pm on weekdays and Sundays, until 8:00pm on Saturdays and nights before holidays) The mid to upper areas remain open The planned closing date is Sunday 29th March ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 80cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 22nd March (until 9:00pm) 12 lifts and 14 runs remain open The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 300cm Base: 220cm Notes: The planned closing date is Sunday 17th May (Kagura via Mitsumata) ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 120cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays until 28th March (until 2:00am the next morning) Mostly open The planned closing date is Sunday 19th April ---------------------------- Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 175cm (upper) Notes: The planned closing date is Sunday 29th March ---------------------------- Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 240cm Base: 800cm Notes: The planned closing date is Sunday 29th March ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 120cm Base: 50cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 21st March (until 8:30pm) The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April ---------------------------- NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 95cm Notes: The planned closing date is Tuesday 31st March ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 140cm Base: 70cm Notes: The Ropeway connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now closed for the season The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April ---------------------------- Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 55cm Notes: Part open The planned closing date is Sunday 29th March ---------------------------- Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 60cm Notes: Part open The planned closing date is Tuesday 31st March Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Friday 27th March 2026 Total snowfall at base so far 917cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 52 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 68cm (on 25th January) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days January 2026 snowfall 595cm reported on 23 days February 2026 snowfall 132cm reported on 13 days March 2026 snowfall 34cm reported on 6 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Today will probably be similar kind of weather. We might get some sun tomorrow morning too, though there might be some rain later on. Today is the last day of the snow season for the following ski areas: - Iwappara - Maiko Snow Resort - Muica Snow Resort - Muikamachi Hakkaisan - Nakazato Snow Wood - Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort The following ski areas seem intent on sticking it out on a limited basis until Tuesday (31st): - Ipponsugi - Naspa Ski Garden - Yuzawa Park There's only a very small amount of snow left in my garden in a shaded corner. That will surely be gone sometime in the next few days. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Update Tomorrow is going to be windy by the looks and we can expect lift disruption - at the time of my update, both GALA Yuzawa and Ishiuchi Maruyama have said that they will not be opening tomorrow. Others might be affected. With rain too, it's not going to be nice out there anyway! ------ Good morning from Yuzawa. It's a bright and sunny and very warm morning. The temperature shown by the side of Route 17 about 15 minutes ago was 18C. It's due to warm up to over 20C today for the first time this year. Rain is expected tomorrow. Yesterday was the last day of the snow season for the following ski areas: - Iwappara - Maiko Snow Resort - Muica Snow Resort - Muikamachi Hakkaisan - Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Sorry, Nakazato Snow Wood was in the list by accident yesterday... it is open today, but today is the last day. The following ski areas are open on a limited basis (just about!) until tomorrow: - Ipponsugi - Naspa Ski Garden - Yuzawa Park After tomorrow, we'll be left with GALA Yuzawa, Yuzawa Kogen, Kandatsu Snow Resort, Joetsu Kokusai, Kagura and Naeba. That snow remaining in the shaded corner of my garden... I think it might last a few more hours! --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 150cm Notes: The Central Area and the main part of the Northern Area remain open The planned closing date is Wednesday 6th May ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 100cm Notes: Part open Floodlit night skiing on Fridays and Saturdays until 28th March (until 8:00pm) The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 80cm Notes: 5 lifts and 9 runs remain open The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 300cm Base: 220cm Notes: The planned closing date is Sunday 17th May (Kagura via Mitsumata Ropeway) ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 105cm Notes: Part open The planned closing date is Sunday 19th April ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 120cm Base: 50cm Notes: Part open The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April ---------------------------- NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 85cm Notes: Part open The planned closing date is Tuesday 31st March ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 130cm Base: 60cm Notes: Kogen area open The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Monday 30th March 2026 Total snowfall at base so far 917cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 52 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 68cm (on 25th January) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days January 2026 snowfall 595cm reported on 23 days February 2026 snowfall 132cm reported on 13 days March 2026 snowfall 34cm reported on 6 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. - Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 31st March 2026
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 917cm Posted on Tuesday 31st March 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Almost 20C in town yesterday. OK, so after the spell of clearer weather, today we are in for a change. We expect rain and also some strong winds from around lunchtime. It doesn't feel windy early on this morning but it might get very windy out there soon. The forecast was so clear that GALA Yuzawa, Ishiuchi Maruyama and Yuzawa Kogen all announced that they would not be opening today. Kagura will also be closed. Southerly winds, too... famously the kind that is least friendly to snow. No info from Kandatsu or Joetsu Kokusai. So limited choices this morning and I'm not sure how appealing any of them would be. (For me, anyway). Today is the last day of the season for these ski areas: - Ipponsugi - Naspa Ski Garden - Yuzawa Park From tomorrow, the following ski areas plan to remain open: - GALA Yuzawa - Joetsu Kokusai - Kandatsu Snow Resort - Kagura - Naeba - Yuzawa Kogen Garden snow update breaking news: there is still a small patch of snow, but it will 100% be gone sometime today! Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Tuesday 31st March 2026 Total snowfall at base so far 917cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 52 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 68cm (on 25th January) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days January 2026 snowfall 595cm reported on 23 days February 2026 snowfall 132cm reported on 13 days March 2026 snowfall 34cm reported on 6 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. - Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 1st April 2026
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 917cm Posted on Wednesday 1st April 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We even got some spells of sun yesterday and while it was windy and rainy at times, perhaps not quite as much as forecasts told us to expect. Today weather should be improved - less windy - but still grey and cloudy and rainy at times. Clearer skies are currently due on Friday. The ski areas that closed for the season over the last few days did really well to be able to remain open as long as they did. (Even if some were really hanging on by the smallest of threads!) That was all thanks to the relatively low temps for much of March. Joetsu Kokusai ski area, north of Yuzawa in Minamiuonuma, decided that it couldn't continue any longer and is now closed for the season. The ski areas that were closed yesterday due to the horrid weather all (seem to be) back open this morning. The next big question, for a nerdy type like me anyway, is... will Kandatsu, Gala and Kagura be able to open as long as they originally planned. As part of some ongoing work - new version of SnowJapan coming later this year (more on that next month) - I've been looking at snow depth data these last few days. Official snow depth at Kandatsu Snow Resort as of 31st March: 2026: 100cm 2025: 280cm Official snow depth at GALA Yuzawa as of 31st March: 2026: 140cm 2025: 320cm Official snow depth at Kagura as of 31st March: 2026: 300cm 2025: 450cm Official snow depth data is certainly not perfect, but it acts as a guide and the annual data is comparable for each ski area. Clearly, we have much less snow than we had at this point last year. Going back further, it's not quite the lowest ever, but on the low side. The remaining ski areas are going to struggle to remain open until their original planned dates. In particular, Gala hanging on until Golden Week (late April) currently feels unlikely. Anyway, I will keep you posted in these reports! (The last of the snow in my garden disappeared by 1pm yesterday. A commemorative ceremony was held). --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 140cm Notes: Part open (Central Area and the main part of the Northern Area) The planned closing date is Wednesday 6th May ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 80cm Notes: Part open The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 300cm Base: 220cm Notes: The planned closing date is Sunday 17th May (Kagura via Mitsumata Ropeway) ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 100cm Notes: Part open The planned closing date is Sunday 19th April ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 110cm Base: 40cm Notes: Part open The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 130cm Base: 60cm Notes: Part open The planned closing date is Sunday 5th April ---------------------------- All other ski areas in the Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region have now closed. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. 6pm update Strong winds are forecast tomorrow (Saturday 4th April) along with the rain. As of 6pm this evening, Yuzawa Kogen, GALA Yuzawa and Ishiuchi Maruyama have all announced that they will be closed for the day tomorrow. Over at Kagrua ski area, the Tashiro and central Kagura areas will also be closed tomorrow... and a decision regarding Mitsumata Area will be made tomorrow morning. Naeba seems to be planning on having only the Number 4 lift operating tomorrow. There doesn't seem to be any word regarding tomorrow from Kandatsu Snow Resort, but that ski areas has officially said that they might not be able to remain open until the planned closing date of 19th April. Original morning report Morning from Yuzawa. There's been a fair amount of cloud around this morning but it is largely cleared up now. The sun is out and it's a fine morning. A very welcome contrast to yesterday, which was... not nice! There might be more rain tomorrow with improved conditions more likely on Sunday. The coming weekend is the last for Naeba, Ishiuchi Maruyama and Yuzawa Kogen. Operations at all three of those are limited now as the snow dries up. From next week the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa will be closed for the season, leaving that ski area with the Central Area open. This morning we have the leftovers of that with a bit of rain and some limited visibility. It is expected to improve though, ending up just cloudy. Today is the last day of the season at Naeba and Yuzawa Kogen. Tomorrow we'll be down to GALA Yuzawa, Kandatsu and Kagura. The weather should be sunny, too. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. And after a spell of less than great weather* it has been a beautiful morning. Clear blue skies and sunshine... and very warm. As of 10am, it's around 18C in town and it might get as warm as 24C later on! And we are down to three ski areas that remain open... Kagura, GALA Yuzawa and Kandatsu. From today, GALA is on 'spring operations', and opening from 8:30am with only the Chuo section remaining available. There have been no announcements, but it seems increasingly unlikely they will be able to remain open as long as planned. Almost certainly not until the end of Golden Week. Will let you know when there is any news. Kandatsu has already announced that it will be closing tomorrow (Tuesday) rather than the original planned closing date of 19th April. (* Having said that, I have heard people talking about some fresh snow up at Kagura while it was raining down below - and as much as 5cm or so... though can't find anything about that being mentioned by the ski area itself). --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 80cm Notes: Lifts operating: Gondola, Sociable quad, Barouche quad and Coach pair lift (Central Area only). - Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 8th April 2026
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 917cm Posted on Wednesday 8th April 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Two ski areas in the Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region remain open. GALA Yuzawa and Kagura. What about this then? Fresh snow! Let's rewind a bit. Yesterday, Gala was reporting a 20cm increase in snow depth. There hadn't been 20cm of fresh snowfall, of course, but it turns out it wasn't a typo. Rather, they had been busy moving snow from the (now closed) Northern Area to try and extend the season as much as possible on the (still open) Central Area runs. Back to this morning. While we were getting rained on in town yesterday, higher areas seem to have received some fresh snow overnight. Not much, but it's enough to give the slopes at Gala a fresher look at the beginning of the day and you can see some white on the roof of the quad lifts building and snow escalator thingy. I'd love to be able to tell you how much - just a thin dusting or some cm? - but neither of the two ski areas are saying anything early this morning. And the Kagura webcam isn't working. Actually, let me update that as I am about to publish this report: Kagura, on Facebook, has just said there was 3cm of fresh snow. (Please do that every day throughout the winter season). They are also saying that Kagura is only open up to the Kagura Number 1 romance lift due to 'strong winds'. I really wish I was able to go and check this morning. :( All snow is precious and most welcome! There has been a lot of cloud around early morning, but it has been getting less and the skies area gradually clearing. We might end up with blue skies and sunshine. More sun tomorrow and getting a bit warmer again. --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 100cm Notes: Lifts operating: Gondola, Sociable quad, Barouche quad and Coach pair lift (Central Area only). The planned closing date is Wednesday 6th May. ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 250cm Base: 150cm Notes: Lifts: 12 of 17 lifts remain open with both Mitsumata and Tashiro Ropeways operating. The Tashiro Area (and Tashiro Ropeway) plans to be open until 7th May. The Kagura Area (via Mitsumata Ropeway) plans to be open until Sunday 17th May. ---------------------------- All other ski areas in the Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region have now closed. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 917cm Posted on Saturday 11th April 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday GALA were busy moving snow around and are back open this morning with the same four courses open. Snow is getting thin on the ground, especially (by the looks of the webcams) on Gigi. They are doing their best to hang on, but nature holds most of the cards. I expect some kind of announcement regarding an early closing date sometime in the next week. (That is a personal opinion and not based on any inside information). Kagura is also back open this morning, with both Ropeway bases available. Weather wise we have had some rain until early morning and roads are damp but it should be cloudy and then eventually sunny today. Early on there's some limited visibility at both Gala and Kagura. Clear and sunny skies are forecast for tomorrow from early morning. --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 70cm Notes: Lifts operating: Gondola, Sociable quad, Barouche quad and Coach pair lift (Central Area only). Courses open: Entertainment, Gigi, Edelweiss, Grenoble The planned closing date is Wednesday 6th May (but the ski area is unlikely to be able to stay open that long) ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 250cm Base: 150cm Notes: Lifts: 12 of 17 lifts remain open with both Mitsumata Ropeway and Tashiro Ropeway bases open. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday remained cloudy/foggy/gassy for longer than expected, but this morning it is clear blue skies from early on. A beautiful morning and we expect fine weather tomorrow. Today we should see a high temp of around 16C in town and it'll get over 20C tomorrow. A shout out to the snow maintenance and grooming team at Gala Yuzawa. They always seem to offer very nicely groomed runs up there, and are currently dealing with their remaining snow really admirably. I have noticed lights on up there in recent evenings - they are clearly doing all they can to keep the open runs in the best shape possible.
