It was warmer yesterday and so the snow was of the heavier flavour; still, most definitely much better than rain! Ski area reporting over 30cm up top and I can report another 25cm from base. Nice. I am hearing that the Summit, Beech and Stream tree run courses should be open this morning. Visibility is very limited early this morning. It was actually much clearer about an hour ago, so that may be temporary. Some interesting conditions out there yesterday. I spent a bit of time over at Annupuri and it was a bit icy and I heard similar from a few friends. Today should be generally better as we have a nice layer of lovely fresh snow again. (Well, apart from Niseko Village which is, of course, reporting 0cm). My measurement is 16cm - and it's good stuff, too. At the start of the day we have a mix of cloud and blue sky and sunshine. OK, I have places I am itching to get to! Might see you on the lifts (all of which are opening as planned). ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 6am: -7℃, light winds, 15cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: data n/a. Annupuri 1100m: -11.6℃, WSW2.7m/s. Village 1000m: -10.5℃, WSW2.5m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: SSW3.7m/s, light winds, 15cm new snow. Hanazono 800m: -8.0℃, W3.9m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape WNW9m/s, Kamui Cape SW10m/s, 1012hPa, 3.9m waves. Light westerly winds blowing in from the sea, the pressure gradient is shallow and the coastal mountains are calm. 10-25cm of soft snow has fallen. Slab formation is minimal, and the general avalanche risk is low. Winter surface avalanches occur when wind slabs (wind-generated snow slabs) created during strong snowstorms, break off. While the sun can also cause slab formation, accidents are more likely to occur in bad weather. Niseko assesses avalanche risk based on snowfall trends, such as blizzards, and provides information based on these trends. Moiwa Gate 10, where a series of accidents, some fatal, over the past 15 years is closed. Also Gate 6 toward Mikaeri is closed until new resort safety measures are in place. All peak gates are expected to be open. Please follow the patrol’s instructions. This is the first time in 30 years that new no-entry zones have been designated. Niseko respects your freedom but must always balance that with safety. We know that Niseko Rules would not be possible without everyone’s cooperation and we must insist that everyone cooperates. The snow is good, but you may hit rock bottom in some places. Be careful of falling, hitting trees, or falling into creeks. Are your beacons on? For us in mid-winter, anyway. Clear skies are forecast for tomorrow morning but there might be some fresh snow before Sunday morning, though I wouldn't expect anything major. A mid-winter cold front is due to be over the region from around Tuesday next week. Perhaps we can expect some good snowfall then. Just over 1cm of snow to add this morning but I think the more important news is that wind has eased off and top lifts are scheduled to open as planned at the start of the day. My report was late yesterday, but I added some numbers in there that might be interest to snowfall data watchers. You can find the report here if you missed it. I know many of you probably do anyway, but please be sure to check the Avalanche Report below. I haven't mentioned recent accidents on the mountain in my reports as I can't really add anything of value. Of course, my thoughts are with the family and friends of people involved. Sombre incidents like this make you take a moment and re-assess everything. Or they probably should, anyway. Take care out there, everyone. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 6am: -5℃, no new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -7.9℃, trace new snow, other data n/a. Annupuri 1100m: -10.4℃, WNW6.6m/s, trace new snow. Village 1000m: -9.3℃, W4.8m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -10.2℃, ESE2.6m/s. Hanazono 800m: -6.7℃, ENE3.7m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NW13m/s, Kamui Cape SW12m/s, 1006hPa, 1.5m waves. A temporary relaxation of the atmospheric pressure gradient has reduced wind speed and wave height at sea and on the mountain. Snowdrift development has subsided, and the general avalanche risk has decreased. Gates will open as soon as preparations are complete. However Moiwa will remain closed. Check with patrol and prepare before heading out the gates. The area outside is not part of the ski resort. Annupuri gate 8 will open today. Avoid the cornice slope on the other side of the valley, ride the fall line and start the exit traverse before the creek at the bottom. Be careful not to fall into the creek by staying out of the valley bottom. The dangers of the mine stream on the southeast face of the summit are unpredictable. Do not take beginners there carelessly. Ski along the fall line, not traverse the upper slope. Stay out of the valley. The dangers of the SE face of the peak in upper BackBowl are unpredictable. Do not carelessly take beginners there. Ride the fall line, never traverse the upper slope. Stay out of the valley. The entire Anbetsu River will temporarily be designated a completely off-limits zone under Niseko rules. Skiing there has been permitted for over 15 years, but accidents continue to occur. Going forward, all access from Moiwa Ski Resort and other resorts will be prohibited. Do not try to find loopholes. A single track can lead to an accident. Niseko respects the freedom to ski out of bounds. But at the same time, we are constantly concerned about mountain accidents due to low temperatures. There is no safety in this sport. Overconfidence leads to accidents, and caution prevents them. Yesterday, Hirafu and Village patrols conducted rescue operations in the strictly off-limit area Haru no Taki. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . A big bank of cloud covering the mountain this morning and the ski area is actually reporting up to 5cm up in the top area. None below where it has been... how should I say it... damp. Thankfully not raining now. It is a (relatively, of course) mild morning, currently just over 2C. Very limited visibility on the mountain at the start of the day but it appears that the lifts should be opening as scheduled. For those visiting over the weekend, it's probably going to start with some clearer skies with the chance of snow overnight. I'm really liking the look of Tuesday/Wednesday next week, though. Proper cold and proper heavy snow. Naski will be pleased. My ski area friend this morning says they have recorded 61cm of snow at the top, and there's been nearly 40cm again lower down here. We're probably looking at milder conditions from later on.
