The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. As I write this, it is trying to snow in town areas. Sort of very wet, sleet-like rain/snow, if that makes sense. And then at times it's just 100% wet rain. However, if forecasts are correct, I might well have some cm of snow to report to you (from town level) tomorrow morning. In the meantime, there has been snow higher up. Please check out the GALA Yuzawa webcam image below. Expect Kagura to have had more than that. Kagura is of course aiming to open on 22nd November, but there is no word from them yet on the chance of that happening. While there should be some more snow by tomorrow, sun is forecast for much of the rest of the week. Enough? I'll keep you informed! The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa; I have good news! Now that all the bears have gone to sleep - hopefully/please/maybe not - we start this morning with a celebratory blanket of snow in town. I was just looking back at the data from previous seasons. Since SnowJapan started collecting daily snowfall records in 2012, the first cm of snow in town recorded in Yuzawa Now reports was just 1cm on 15th November 2012. Since then, the earliest snowfall was reported on 19th November. Today is also 19th November and we have our first snow of the season in town. And it is actually a pretty decent amount of it too! It was snowing very nicely at times last night. I am measuring 12cm. Kagura ski area isn't reporting anything yet, but the guess is there should be (much) more than that high up in the mountains. Very often the first snow down to town disappears before winter starts properly, so don't expect this town covering to last. Clearer skies and milder conditions are expected over the coming several days, with perhaps a little snow on Friday night. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Morning from Yuzawa. It's a beauty of a morning, too, with clear blue skies and much milder conditions. There's still snow on the ground around my place, but it's probably going to be gone fairly soon. Yesterday, Kagura was claiming 50-60cm of snowfall on the main Kagura run and 20-30cm at the Mitsumata base. At the time of this report there has not been any announcement yet, but an opening on Saturday definitely seems possible. UPDATE: Kagura will open at 8:30am on Saturday... with the main 1500m Kagura run available. Kagura are not mentioning any new snow, but they are probably busy... because today is the first day of the ski season up there. Details of what is open below. There hasn't been any fresh snow and with the existing snow getting less in Mitsumata, there's now a bit of walking involved between ski lifts. Skiing remains available, but is limited to that one 1500m run. Upper areas may get some fresh snow at times across coming days, but we shouldn't expect anything major or prolonged. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday was a fine day and quite warm during the day time - and rather windy, too. Due to that wind, Kagura was closed for the day. Kagura is back open this morning, but it's just the main course that is available. It's a bit of a stuttering start, but that is not uncommon. The middle of next week is looking good for a healthy dose of snowfall. Let's keep an eye on that. We had rain overnight and rain is expected today down in town. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It's a grey early morning and feels fairly mild. [9am update: clearer and sunny now] We will probably get rained on before the upcoming snow arrives, but we are definitely due that snow soon... probably by tomorrow night. Forecasts look very promising too, and we might get a fair bit of snow down to town level through until perhaps Friday. Exciting! I will, of course, tell you all about it. Lots, please. Kagura Ski Area is closed today as some work is done on some kind of issues with the Kagura gondola. The ski area will hopefully be open again from tomorrow. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Snow eased off for much of yesterday in the day time and we had some sun at times, too. It is snowing on and off this morning and there's just over 6cm of fresh to report since yesterday. Perhaps not as much as we thought we might get, but we do expect snowfall during the day today. There was some speculation that Joetsu Kokusai might actually be able to make it's (often unrealistically sounding) early opening date of Saturday 6th December. But, alas, they have said that they won't be able to open tomorrow. Kandatsu Snow Resort has announced that it will be doing a 'pre-open' from 12th December - a week earlier than planned. We are expecting clearer skies over the weekend and some mild temperatures. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. It is a truly beautiful morning here. There's clear blue skies and sunshine and with that lovely snow on the ground, of course. 14cm more fresh snow to report since yesterday morning. It was snowing quite heavily at times during the day yesterday before easing off in the evening. Kagura now has a bunch of runs open including Giant, Technical and Panorama, so there's a fair amount of terrain to play in. Joetsu Kokusai is on standby to open as soon as there is enough snow. (They are currently looking at Monday as a possible, but with the fine weather today and tomorrow that seems rather unlikely. Anyway, we'll keep you up to date on that as the days go on). So, yes, we expect fine weather today and tomorrow with tomorrow possibly getting up to above 10C in town. A word about the planned opening date of GALA Yuzawa. The ski area actually plans to be open 13th-19th December, but for sightseeing purposes only. Skiing and snowboarding will not be available during that period. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. A bit of a damp morning but largely just cloudy early on. Kandatsu is still aiming to open on Friday (12th December), perhaps relying on fresh snow before opening time. In other news, delayed from its original planned opening date, Joetsu Kokusai is now saying that it plans to open on Saturday. Saturday is also the planned opening date of Yuzawa Kogen and Naeba, but there's no specific news about those potential openings just yet. Friday is going to be an important day (for the above ski areas in particular) as snow is forecast from late night Thursday into Friday. Let's hope there's enough. Beyond that, of course, as we approach the middle of December we are looking for more consistent snowfall. Many ski areas in the region hope to be able to open in about 10 days. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Hello from Yuzawa. Yesterday it was snowing (wet snow) at times in town, rain at others. It was a cold and wet kind of day. This morning it is largely overcast over Yuzawa but bright. We can expect some clearer skies during the day and milder conditions. It kind of felt inevitable, but Kandatsu Snow Resort has delayed opening as there isn't enough snow. So they will not be open tomorrow. The ski area hasn't announced anything beyond that, so I would expect them to be on standby for when there is enough snow. Tomorrow is still expected to be snowy. Possibly very snowy.
