Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido

New snowfall at base 19cm
Snowfall at base this season 120cm

Posted on Thursday 30th November 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here

Good morning everyone.

Some good snowfall to report this morning - almost 20cm of it and it is still coming down. It's cold, it's snowing. That is a good way to end November.

I may be out of practice but I still can't find any kind of official announcements from ski areas... yet.

With Niseko Village planning to open tomorrow and the others the day after, they are going to have to make their decisions pretty soon! (Cue some very thoughtful contemplative sucking of air). ;)

I am guessing that they will be able to (part) open as planned. Anyway, I will update this report this afternoon if there is any opening news.

By the way, SnowJapan has prepared a handy info page detailing what ski areas are open in Japan at the moment. Here it is.

2pm update:

I was hoping to update you all with some excite news of the first ski lifts moving tomorrow, but I don't have anything to report so far.

As of 2pm, on the ski area status page of Niseko United, Niseko Village are still going with a 'the season finished on 9th April'(ニセコビレッジスキーリゾートは4月9日をもちまして、今シーズンの営業を終了いたしました)message from over six months ago, and their Facebook page is talking about rejuvenating bathing experiences. I can't find any news about ski lifts opening tomorrow on their official website either.

Niseko Moiwa are actually talking about opening on Saturday. But other than that... no details to report from any of the ski areas.

With more snow falling since my original morning report (that snowfall will be reported tomorrow), I'm still guessing that things will be opening as originally planned. But it is just a guess.
