New snowfall at base 3cm
Snowfall at base this season 666cm

Posted on Monday 30th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here

Good morning from Niseko.

Just a little snowfall yesterday and this morning it is, once again, very cold with some sunshine and perhaps more coming as the morning progresses. Light snow might start up again though from around lunchtime. It might not get to be heavy snow, but consistent light to moderate seems likely on and off through the coming week. A bit of sun every now and again added to that and that sounds great to me.

Lifts are opening as planned this morning. Let's Happy Monday.

Niseko Avalanche Report

Mountain base -12C, 2cm new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -13.3C, NE1.4m/s, trace new snow, good visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -16.0C, WSW2.0m/s, trace new snow, good visibility. Mizuno no Sawa: -15.1C, WSW1.4m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -15.5C, WSW1.1m/s. Hanazono#3: -12.4C, WSW3.1m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape SSW3m/s, Kamui Cape SW8m/s, 1011hPa, 1.2m waves.

The sea and mountains are calm under a shallow atmospheric pressure gradient. From observation and data evaluation the general avalanche risk is low. Peak gates are expected to be open. Do not duck the ropes, use the gates. Multiple riders on the same slope or traversing cornice slopes can trigger avalanches. Creeks, gullies and valley bottoms become avalanche paths. Avalanches are a natural phenomenon and accidents only happen when people get caught in them. The great conditions continue. Is your beacon on? Beware of sudden changes in the weather. Have a good day.
