Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 25cm
Snowfall at base this season 37cm

Posted on Wednesday 7th December 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.

The first real snow of the year!

We knew something was ahead yesterday when the day started with the rumbling of thunder high above the mountains, one of the signs of snow ahead (actually, I hear it's from graupel—soft hail—high up in the clouds bouncing around and generating static electricity). We got about 25 centimeters, my snow ruler tells me. It's wet, it's sticky, but everything's white and that is good.

The official (snow permitting) area openings are coming up:

Akakura Kanko: Dec. 16

Akakura Onsen: Dec. 10

Ikenotaira Onsen: Dec. 17

Myoko Suginohara: Dec. 23

Seki Onsen: Dec. 23

Myoko Ski Park: Dec. 18

Kyukamura RunRun: Dec. 17

Tangram Ski Circus: Dec. 17

Madarao Kogen: Dec. 17

This is some good, moist, early-season snow, which hopefully will make a nice base for further snowfalls.
