Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 43cm
Snowfall at base this season 986cm

Posted on Tuesday 31st January 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.

The rain turned to snow at the end of the day yesterday, and then some serious snowfall.

Lots of wind during the night and into the early morning, too, so we have a lot of big snow drifts (like my sealed-in front door earlier; made for some fun shoveling with the hardening rain-soaked stuff at the bottom of the pack).

It's also pretty cold this morning, with the car thermometer (my reliable source when I can't hang one out) said -6° around 7 this morning. It could be a great day, with the sun likely to come out later.

A little care should be taken by those heading into the backcountry; that wind (which has now died down) very likely loaded lee slopes. On top of the rain layer below, things could be a little dicey, so do be careful and maybe avoid the steepest slopes.
