Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata
New snowfall at base 0cm
Snowfall at base this season 1088cm
Posted on Wednesday 18th March 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.
It’s warmer today with the wind shifting around to the southwest and blowing pretty steadily. That wind is going to keep on eating the snowpack; add on tomorrow’s rain and we’re going to have some bare spots on some of the runs.
Spring is definitely here today; so is pollen from the sugi (cryptomeria) trees. The national reporting on this annual phenomenon has Niigata at the top end along with most of the northeast. Lots of sneezing and runny noses around here right now. I guess it takes a few years to develop sensitivity (I once saw a video of a older monkey sneezing and rubbing his eyes), so maybe the newcomers aren’t hurting yet. Mostly itchy eyes and excessive tissue use for your writer....
Rain tomorrow may help bring down some of the pollen. That’s about the only good thing about rain this time of year.
