Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 12cm
Snowfall at base this season 62cm

Posted on Monday 13th December 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.

The forecast was for snow, and it is falling out there. Not terrifically hard or fast, but we do have a nice accumulation going (I waited until a little bit late in the morning to give the snow a good poke with the official ruler). Lotte Arai and Akakura Onsen had wanted to open on the 11th, but that didn't happen. Many others are scheduled for opening on the 18th, but to be honest I think that's unlikely. This snow is not going to last, and the temperature is going to go back up again, until we might see colder temps and some more snow this coming weekend. But that's not unusual; we usually tell people to look at Christmas as a more likely date with snow on the ground and skiers on the hill (and even then it can be really, really close to no white Christmas). The snowfall is picking up as I write this, though; nice to see some steady snowfall at any rate! A preview of good things to come?
