Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano

New snowfall at base 1cm
Snowfall at base this season 157cm

Posted on Tuesday 31st December 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here.

It was a very busy day out on most of the slopes in the valley yesterday. Generally fine weather conditions with the sun remaining out over the village for most of the day and a bank of cloud staying put higher on the mountains.

Some strong winds affected some lifts in the afternoon.

Snow started falling earlier this morning with a cm or so at base and resorts reporting 5-10cm higher up - the most being reported by Hakuba Goryu who say there has been up to 20cm on the upper slopes there. It's still snowing now and hopefully will be through tomorrow. Unclear how much we are due to get really, so we'll just have to wait and see and pray for a fluffy white New Year.

Today will be another busy one - both during the day on the slopes and in the evening in the bars and restaurants around the village. Hope you have a fun and safe New Years Eve and let's start again tomorrow morning for 2014. Which will of course be the snowiest year on record. Maybe.
