Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano

New snowfall at base 8cm
Snowfall at base this season 360cm

Posted on Thursday 11th February 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here.

Good morning from Hakuba.

Clouds are clearing this morning and even over the last 30 minutes or so as I have been putting this report together there is more blue sky opening up and the sun is breaking through more and more. It's going to be getting rather mild over the next few days and there's a good amount of sunshine on the forecasts. Just how mild/warm it gets remains to be seen but it looks like the whole of Japan is on for an unseasonably warm run of days. A return to more winter like conditions and fresh snow is due to arrive early week.

Some interesting numbers this morning. Happo-one reports 10cm at lower Nakiyama and upper Kurobishi areas... and 42cm at Usagidaira. That last number seems somewhat out of step with other numbers both from Happo and other ski areas, but I'm curious to explore! As you can see below ski areas are 15-25cm on their upper area this morning. I have 9cm to report to you from base.

Wind is unfortunately affecting top lifts at Happo at the time of writing, though the gondola is moving.

Should be a fine day.
