Independent snow and weather reporting from the Furano region of Hokkaido

New snowfall at base 6cm
Snowfall at base this season 203cm

Posted on Thursday 15th December 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Furano Now report can be found here.

It couldn't be a more perfect morning here in Furano but it is cold. In the village it is a very chilly -16c, which is the kind of temperature we would expect to get in February. Conditions are extremely clear with not a cloud visible over the resort and perfect blue skies. To top this off there has been 6cm of very light snow since yesterdays report. The courses that are open are in very nice condition with superb packed powder. Certain courses are likely to be fairly crowded in places today due to several school groups on the mountain.

As we head out of mid December and toward Christmas there are many wondering when Kitanomine will open. The resort has said opening is delayed due to the snow depth not quite being enough. Looking up at the Kitanomine slopes this morning they must be very close to being ready though as the front face has had a groomer over it and looks pretty good to me.

Looking at the weather for the weekend, moderate winds are expected on the upper mountain on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday should see a little more snow but after that there is absolutely nothing on the forecast through to Tuesday.

The following courses are expected to be open today:

Technical

Panorama

Spies

Sailer

Prince
