Cross-country in Japan?

I am curious about cross-country ski in Japan. Are there many Japanese praticing this sport?

 

Would it be easy for a gaijin to get in a trail in Japan?

I live just beside a cross-country trail in Canada (in the Laurentians) and it is my favorit winter sport.
