I'm just wondering what others are using for snowshoes... I'm thinking of getting a pair of MSR Lightening Ascents but I'm debating between the 25 and 30 inch ones. I'm 80 kgs (so kind of at that awkward in-between size for that brand according to their size chart with load... I think).

Any suggestions?

What do you want your snowshoes for?

Mine are strictly for self rescue on the Hakkoda mountains. As such they are short, 25-inches. Completely unsuitable for proper snow shoeing on these conditions, small enough that I actually carry them with me, and beats the hell out of walking without them. On Asahikawa-type of super fine powder they would probably be meaningless.

Are you planning on doing any kind of semi-technical climbs where you ought to use crampons but will go with snowshoes instead? If so you may want something with a bit more bite on the claws.

My all time favorite are the Atlas 12 series. They come in 25 and 30 inches, have and ungodly amount of articulation, a heel cup to make it easier to go uphill, and are built like a tank.
