I'm thinking of getting a pair of MSR Lightening Ascents but I'm debating between the 25 and 30 inch ones. I'm 80 kgs (so kind of at that awkward in-between size for that brand according to their size chart with load... I think). Any suggestions? Link to post Share on other sites
yamabushi 3 Posted February 15, 2012 Share Posted February 15, 2012 What do you want your snowshoes for? Mine are strictly for self rescue on the Hakkoda mountains. As such they are short, 25-inches. Completely unsuitable for proper snow shoeing on these conditions, small enough that I actually carry them with me, and beats the hell out of walking without them. On Asahikawa-type of super fine powder they would probably be meaningless. Are you planning on doing any kind of semi-technical climbs where you ought to use crampons but will go with snowshoes instead? If so you may want something with a bit more bite on the claws. My all time favorite are the Atlas 12 series. They come in 25 and 30 inches, have and ungodly amount of articulation, a heel cup to make it easier to go uphill, and are built like a tank.
