Hi Cool Boarder Guy,

We tried to book this train through Perth, by ourselves and also through a travel agent - no luck I am sorry.

It does look supercool - it is one of the biggest disappointments for Hubby from this trip that he could not take the train.

Apparently it is not covered by JR, but I do believe the agent explained that you can use your JR pass for part of the cost and then buy and upgrade - but don't quote me on that!

From what we could make out you could only buy tickets WITHIN Japan, and tickets opened one month prior to departure for each date, and sold out FAST. Bit hard to organise from Aus, huh?

Best bet - contact a Travel Agent specialising in Japan and see if they can do better...

Yes, what MB said is true - for all of the overnight sleeper trains, the JR Rail Pass is not valid for the entire cost. I can't remember what upcharge I had to pay... Cheaper than an airline ticket and a hotel room though! They can probably book your reservation at the JR office in the Airport where you will be physically acquiring you rail pass on arrival. You need to be in possession of the pass (specifically for the pass number) in order to make the ticket purchase, so it is unfortunately you can't do it in advance.
