  1. If the choice is anywhere in the world, I'd go to the Swiss Alps. Good skiing and enough for the wife to do during the day. (note, I've only been their in summer, but based on travel shows the skiing is good, and enough non skiing activities to keep the missus happy)
    100%

    Zermatt.

Lift access and walking trails to practically everywhere a skier can access. Ability to meet on the mountain at any number of places for a meal/drink, and to sit in the glorious sun drinking in the view as your skiing mate whizzes past. Ski up bars are the SHIZZ!

Village of good size with a vast array of shopping, museum, ice skating...

Sledding able to be done on dedicated sled piste off the Gornegrat rail.

    Grindelwald/Jungfrau region.

This could potentially be even better.

I loved the beautiful quaint village of Grindelwald, loads of shops. Sport center with pool.

Grindelwald First mountain had a fantastic flying fox between gondola stations, and also did sledding/sled bikes on dedicated pistes.

Gondolas are conducive to plenty of foot passengers enjoying the environment.

A short train ride away and you can head up to the Jungfraujoch - the glacier up close took my breath away and I stared at the layers in the ice in the ice castle until PB dragged me away. Fascinating stuff.

Little bit further on the train and you are at Interlaken - big city stuff. She could always do a day in there if the snowed in lifestyle at Grindelwald/Wengen is getting too much.

  2. We often make a decision one or two weeks before and just go.

But have found it difficult to do that if the destination is Niseko. Anywhere in peak period (and it is usually Christmas New Year that we do this spontaneous thing) is difficult to get accomodation to suit your requirements.

Flights then accomodation in most cases yes, but I would recommend scoping accomodation FIRST.

After realizing Niseko was an impossibility last Christmas we booked flights into Geneva. Lots of resorts from there...we are not fussy..just needed a boardercross track and park for the small one to train on. Easy!....?... Ummm no...not so easy. We ended up with great accomodation, great fun had in Chamonix and Tignes BUT we only secured the accomodation a matter of DAYS before we flew out. I was seriously worried we would be building a snow cave

Spontaneity is awesome though. You tend to go places you didn't consider because the ones you did are full. You tend to stay at hotels/styles of accomodation you didn't first consider as the first thoughts were full. It is an adventure.

  3. a Spanish 17yr old living with me now....

Does Papabear know about this, Mamabear?

    ;)

    HE ORGANIZED it ;)

    It's convoluted.

Young boy, mother passed away, father on a contract until end of next Olympics in China, a kid alone looking for opportunity. We are very close friends with our sons coach, who is the boys fathers close friend. We've met the father a few times. Age difference between #3 son and 'new son' is just 6 months and they will train and play together.

Originally a 3 month thing. Looks like it will be a lot longer :)

I was actually worried he was gonna kick my ass at training.

I've been so sick and really only now coming back - I needn't have worried

Old, grumpy and determined has it all over young, fit and Pffft that's hard work ;)

  4. Good on you teikietsulover.

Nothing like attacking what you want with passion.

Over the past two years I have taken the youngest 3 of my sons with me to my cardio kickboxing session (eldest is never going to come - allergic to effort). They've all refused to go back after stopping early, stepping back on bag holding and having the kind of DOMS you described afterwards.

I have a new 'son' - a Spanish 17yr old living with me now, and he was lamenting the break in Water Polo training at the moment. "I want to train. I want to train.".

Ok...want to come with me? It's better than nothing...

    Ok.

I broke the new son too.

  5. Compared to AU food and alcohol is dirt cheap in japan. Like half price or less.

I've heard that about food from several people. The cost of living in Australia sounds savage.

No it about the same over all. The Meat (Beef, Chook,Lamb), veg and fruit are way cheaper then Japan. I picked up a lovely loin of Scotch Fillet today for Y1000 kg were in Japan it would be Y1000 for 100gm. Where in Japan other daily item are cheaper. So it kind of work out thje same. I do the shopping for the hotel while in Hakuba and I do the shopping at home in Aussie. But I am a shopper and I do source the best prices every time I go shopping. So you can be lazy and top price or be studious Like you can buy 2 litres of milk for $2 shop brand or buy $4 for Top shelf. Most produce are price like that Shop or Genetic brands or Top selve price. But the price Spirits is dead cheap where bber is about the same $45 for a 24 can slab in Aussie, Y4800 for a slab in Japan.

I think you mean generic brands John-san.

Buying cheap is not always better though...

As with everywhere some things are expensive and some are cheap, beef is expensive - if you like a lot of beef, then it will hit your hip pocket. Personally I really enjoy eating local foods. No real objection to having a piece of vegemite toast in the morning, but when buying food and eating out I will embrace local foods, and it usually works out cheaper.

  6.

Just wondering if any one has some more meal suggestions or good ideas?

My personal trainer suggested his fave breakfast to me...I haven't tried it yet.

I tend to have 2 eggs + 1 tablespoon of MCT oil or EV Coconut Oil scrambled, no toast.

His recipe is 2 eggs + 1 banana blended in thermomix (can use any blender) then cooked like a pancake or omelette in a frypan lubricated with a decent amount of EV Coconut oil.

The boys love breakfast egg and bacon cups.

Grease muffin pan with EV Coconut oil or EVOO, lay in strips of bacon to create a 'nest', crack in one egg, sprinkle with a little cheese and bake.

  7. A Japanese court has jailed a man for slipping corrosive poison into the shoes of a colleague he was stalking, causing her to have the tips of her toes amputated, officials and media reports say.

Tatsujiro Fukasawa, 41, was handed a seven-year sentence for assault, a court official confirmed on Friday. He poured the acid into the woman's shoes late last year after she turned down his romantic overtures, media reports said.

"This was a vicious crime because he used a chemical that can kill people," said Judge Takafumi Miyamoto of the Shizuoka District Court, Jiji Press news agency said.

Hydrofluoric acid - which Fukasawa obtained from the laboratory where he and his victim worked - can result in death if absorbed through skin and into the bloodstream.

The victim went to hospital complaining of pain and developed gangrene in one foot, forcing her to have the ends of her toes amputated, reports said.

    What a sick F***!
