  1. Thanks Mamabear. What kind of workouts do you do with them? What do you think of them? They seem like a good way to improve strength without paying for a gym membership or needing a huge amount of space for a machine,.

I use them at group personal training.

When we make groups of 3, one boxing, one bag holder, the third often does kettle ball swings - on rotation. It IS a very good exercise for engaging many muscle groups at once, good for core and stability. Will also use it as a station when doing a rotation session, again usually full body overhead swings. We have free weights so bicep curls, tricep kickback etc would be done with those, not the kettle bells.

Some of the participants on injury rehab use them to carry as they walk, instead of running.

Thank you for the info! I watched some videos this evening and am starting to think Ill buy some. I like what I've seen and read about them so far. My friends talk about them lots, but they're also workout freaks. Thanks again!

Don't overlook resistance bands for a great compact bit of workout equipment. I take mine away with me - easy to pack.

The boys use them for arm/shoulder work mainly (Water Polo), but I use them in many different exercises targeting pretty much everywhere. You can get different strength bands, but can also adjust for example in a single shoulder press by moving your foot along the band one way or the other.

Check out a vid of some exercises:

  2. Make up all the excuses you want MB but we all know you're soft ;)

    you cheeky barsteward

Yep...so soft I've done two kickboxing sessions and a weight session with torn intercostals this week.

And outside, in the rain, with no jumper.

STILL reckon it was fecking freezing earlier this week ;)

  3. Yeah it always makes me laugh when people in Perth complain of cold weather. I mean on the day that MB is freezing her nips off, a day that got up to 20 degrees, here at the southern tip of mainland Aus we only got up to about 13 degrees with strong winds and rain and I didn't feel that cold at all and we didn't have any heating on in our house. Not many places in Aus that get anything close to what I would consider cold.

If it makes you feel better GN it maxed at 20.6 today and I was sweating (and running the car airconditioner!)

It was bizarre a few days back.

I don't normally feel the cold. But it was an evil wind.

  5. Snowdude, I am a lover of cold...hate the heat, and do quite well in the snow. Usually people are standing around in two layers of jumpers and shaking their head at me in a tank top... but this was unusual...

Temps were about half a degree higher today, apparent temps quite a few degree's higher, but it was very comfortable - in fact not cold at all tonight pool side...whereas last night I had those uncontrollable shivers. The wind is Perth is nothing short of a game changer.

  6. COLD in Perth today.

I am tempted to pull out the thermals I never needed on snow this Southern season, that are packed ready for Japan....

As PB would say..."Colder than a Mother in Laws kiss!!!"

Um it still got up to 20 degrees in Perth yesterday. This is what you guys in WA consider Colder than a Mother in Laws kiss? The mean maximum temperature for Perth in September is 20.2 degrees so it was a completely normal day for this time of year...

Actually it never hit 20 in Swanbourne, nor Mandurah (where I was for most of the day), and the recorded apparent temps were often in single figures.

For whatever reason the wet and wind of Perth at 13 or 14 degree's is bone chilling, while I can walk around in Thredbo in a tank top at 5 or 6 degree's with the sun shining...

Believe me GN. It was Cold as a Mother in Laws kiss!

  7. Took a fair bit of dedication to get my fat arse to kickboxing today - I've either cracked a rib/sternum or given my intercostals a bit of a bash.

    Either way it freaking hurts.

But there are 3 months until Japan and I want to be fit and thinner than I've ever been in Japan before - some big plans, and hiking with extra weight is not optimal.

May as well start the 'harden up princess' now!

  8. I'd obviously prefer epic POW just a half hour drive from my front door, but this is Australia...it aint gonna happen

    Thankfully there is Japan.

And we can continue to enjoy Aus for what it is - a sunburnt country that gets a bit of snow in a few select spots that can be made a lot of fun if the conditions are right and the snowmakers have a good crack - but this season proved how tenuous a grip on a ski season it actually is.

<Glass half full> Still had fun the 4 trips over I did this season, and some of them were with SHOCKING conditions. </glass half full>

  9. of course.

    LOL

On a serious note...all the snowmaking infrastructure in the world couldn't combat with the warm temps that brought RAIN and washed any snow away.

Not unless they used a refrigerated system, and that'd melt pretty darn quick even if they could make it.

This season has shown that snowmaking is only really useful when you have cold sans weather.

  10. The european alps is like flat terrain compared to Niseko?!?

The snow part....yeah, Niseko gets crazy amounts of powder. Also, regardless of our joshing on here, Niseko also has great terrain, but to even hint that resorts in europe are flatter than Niseko...well...thats just lies. The size of the mountains in alpine europe compared to any resort in Japan should tell their own story.

    THIS.

You can compare them, but you can not compare them if you know what I mean.

Alpine Europe 4000m+ peaks, insanely long runs, glaciers.... magic.

But if you stick the amount of snowfall that Niseko (and many other places in Japan) gets - GOOD LUCK skiing it. Avalanche alert!!

If you are after cheap then Niseko is probably your worst choice out of the multitudes of options in Japan.

But the fun to be had is undeniable.

Check out backpackers or pension accommodation across less commercial resorts for the best budget deals or get yourself a hire van, all the cool gear, and go car danchi like Gozaimaas did last season.

  11. GG

    Glass is still half full.

Season was shite, but I still had fun.

I will always see that glass half full, but I wont be tellin' ya that it is overflowing when it's not.

As for no Season Pass - PB didn't use his at all, I did my break even and then some, the boys just exceeded the break even point.

But we have been talking about NZ for a while now, and also talking with a Perth mate about going with her to HER spiritual home at Hotham, so a Season Pass to Thredbo would make little sense next year, there are only so many days I can get away

    Focus now is on Hokkaido.

BIG plans this season. Bit of touring, bit of exploring, let bring it on!!! :D

  12. [/season]

That's it for me until late December.

Last turns were had at Blue Cow, Perisher on Saturday.

We had a full day on very spring cover - rode very slow and grippy, but for what it was we had great fun.

    Good times with good friends.

Finished up with Efterski festival in Thredbo.

The doof doof of the bass was so loud it was hurting my broken sternum (don't ask, was being an idiot, axed myself on a blue run)

Medicated with copious quantities of alcamahol for the very last Apres of the Southern Season for 2013. :D

    MY SUMMARY

    This season was a shocker.

Thredbo got the worst of it, being so low.

Perisher was smart and took advantage of the situation. I have been won over.

Very smart marketing - they have been offering a free day pass and $10 return ski tube for all Season Pass holders to other Aus/Nz resorts.

The conditions at the two resorts could not be compared! They were worlds apart - what a difference a bit more height makes!

No Season Pass for me next year, I am thinking maybe NZ....

  13. It seems like an obvious question, but if it's so bloody good and Niseko is such a popular and busy place, then why are there not more people using it?

    This indeed confused me also!

Many are just stuffed after a big day and in the bars by then, but if you are not up for a big night on the drink Nighta is awesome. It is the time I used to learn, with a lack of people it was ok to do stuff that might see you sprawled on your face because you wouldn't then be impeding others. Plan for this season is board in the day...learn to ski at night.
