  1. May I present to you, the following play.

    Title: Screw You Electricity

    Author: Sava

    Scene 1:

[sava sitting at his desk at home, doing some 'work']

Sava: Lalalaa, what a fine day to read the snow japan forums. I wonder what witty remarks O11 has in store!

    Scene 2:

[in comes the cable modem, looking menacing]

Sava: Wow, I have new email

    Cable modem: pfzzfzffzfftttt

    Sava: Huh?

    Cable modem: hiss, pop, BANG

[smoke comes out of cable modem]

    Scene 3:

[No lights on cable modem, so no power]

Sava: I wonder if the power cord came out, let me check

[sava goes to check the power cord, touches the back of the modem]

    Cable modem: *ZAP*

    [sava is knocked unconscious]

    Scene 4:

    [sava wakes up, looking around]

    Sava: wtf

[sava goes to hospital for the rest of the day to be monitored for possible arrhythmia]

    THE END

  2. charlotte: Not noticeably, the only real thing affecting the sound is the quality of the headphones/earphones. These things usually come with really dodgy ones (for instance, the ipod white earphones).

I'm waiting for the ipod that's coming out in December or early 2007 (apparently) - full touch screen interface. \:D

  3. People spend too much on consoles, the only one I've ever owned is the original xbox which was given to me as a gift.

I don't understand people paying so much for the PS3 though. As far as I'm aware, there are only two games that will be available that aren't already out on the xbox360.

  4. I've used Debian, Mandrake, Redhat and then Fedora, Mandriva and I've been using ubuntu for the past year.

It has definitely come a long way and there are a lot of basic tasks that work smoothly (multiplatform software such as firefox play a large part in that). However there are so many little things that are frustrating. Given how much time I have to spend in front of a computer, these things end up making a big difference.

I *can* understand why some people like it, but if you don't like tinkering, it can be painful.

  5. For computer science academia, everything is based around conferences... There's about 4 big ones a year and 16 medium ones and a shitload of irrelevant little ones.

You submit your work to a conference and 3 months later, you find out if it was accepted or rejected (in which case, you get comments). After you get it back, there's another deadline about two weeks later which you send to.

The next biggish deadline is in about a week, which I'm not going to make. So I'll keep working for the next 3 months, but I miss the (very valuable) opportunity to get feedback. In addition, I would normally start new work to submit in 3 months time, but it's harder because I still need to put effort into the stuff I'm currently working on.
