  1. they might be charging twice as much as the best resorts in japan but then again they are at least 5 times as big and easily 50 times better.

over kill? hmmmm IT'S A SKI RESORT!!!! over kill, as long as it is logical, serves a purpose, and well thought out, is the industry. from its first inception intrawest has always embodied over kill.

but yeah, pretty pointless. they say skiers will be able to choose the resort according to conditions and weather, but when has it been storming on one mountain and not on the other? and even so, what are the chances of the lift operating during a storm?

none the less, it is an incredible feat of engineering.

  2. what's whistler good for? check this out!

PEAK TO PEAK GONDOLA TO UNITE WHISTLER AND BLACKCOMB AT THE TOP

Record breaking lift will revolutionize resort experience

Whistler Blackcomb, a mountain resort already renowned for daring innovation, is thrilled to announce its boldest move yet with the construction of the Peak to Peak Gondola, for completion December 2008. The two mountains will be united by a gondola that will set world records for length and height while providing an unmatched experience for winter and summer resort guests.

The Peak to Peak Gondola will travel 4.4 kilometres in just 11 minutes, transporting winter and summer guests from Whistler’s Roundhouse Lodge to the Rendezvous Lodge on Blackcomb Mountain, giving them unprecedented access to both mountains’ expansive and unique high alpine terrain and spectacular vistas.

“The Peak to Peak Gondola will create a dramatically enhanced experience that no other mountain resort in North America, possibly the world, can offer,” says Dave Brownlie, Whistler Blackcomb’s Chief Operating Officer. “This link will effectively double, or more, the options for accessing the highest quality and greatest variety of terrain on any one day, from anywhere on the mountains. We are going to completely revolutionize our guests’ experience.”

Skiers and riders will have the opportunity to easily take advantage of 8,171 acres of terrain encompassed by both incredible mountains, via the world's longest continuous lift system. Moving freely between the high alpine areas of both mountains skiers and riders will spend more of their day in the best weather and snow conditions. The adventure for summer visitors will include spectacular views of glaciers and peaks as well as access to an expanded hiking trail network on both mountains.

“This lift is the catalyst for a sustainable economic future benefiting both Whistler Blackcomb and the entire resort community,” says Brownlie. “It will solidify Whistler’s position as the undeniable leader of mountain resorts in North America, while increasing our appeal as a top destination in the world.”

With 28 sky cabins each holding up to 28 people, total capacity will be 4,100 passengers per hour. The Peak to Peak terminal on Whistler Mountain will be located next to the Roundhouse Lodge and easily accessed from the valley by the Village Gondola. On Blackcomb Mountain the Peak to Peak terminal will be located next to the Rendezvous Lodge and accessed from the valley via the Wizard Express and Solar Coaster Express.

Construction will commence in May 2007, with the lift being manufactured and installed by the Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group (Doppelmayr) of Austria The Doppelmayr 3S tri-cable gondola will span 4.4 kilometres (2.73 miles) in total distance from Whistler Mountain to Blackcomb Mountain with the world’s longest unsupported (free) span of 3.024 kilometres (1.88 miles) between the two towers furthest apart. The highest vertical point is over Fitzsimmons Creek at 415 metres (1,361 feet) – the world’s greatest distance above a valley floor.

  3. ger is right about the smaller resorts in canada. they are also top notch and offer lots of spectacular terrain at a significantly cheaper rate. but in late january in the interior you have to be ready for a canadian style cold front. most people can't even begin to fathom what that means let alone enjoy themselves if they are unlucky enough to encounter one.

at that time whistler will have the most agreeable temperatures.

  4. the whistler/blackcomb area is massive. niseko doesn't compare. in fact most resorts in the world don't. do yourself a favour and get hire a guide for a few days. Ski Esprit is a great programme, but i don't know if they have a snowboard version.

whistler is where the world's best live and ride everyday. the locals know how to ride that mountain on a pow day, they know what chairs open first, what areas get controlled first, and what areas to avoid. not only that, they have been racing each other every pow day. so they go FAST. on a fresh day you can expect it to be tracked out by noon.

    YOU DON'T STAND A CHANCE.

but that being said you will still have fun. and you will still get lots of pow. this year they received over 800cm of snow. and the terrain is some of the sickest in bounds available anywhere. they have low angle cruisers like the aussie pow/surf fest of niseko, but they also have stuff that will make you cringe. when peak chair goes off, just sit back and enjoy the show.

as for all the other stuff, yeah it is expensive, but it is so well set up. it is designed to be easy. you really can't have a bad time there.

  5. samurai,

the point some of us are trying to make with the whole gun culture issue is that this is an issue that reaches beyond legislation.

the culture of glorified violence finds its core audience in america. there is simply no denying that. man, i have spend my life straddling two media outlets; the massive american, and the meagre canadian. i can assure you that we don't get the same type of bombardment of sensationalized violence that finds its way on to every network in american media on the cbc or global tv. surely this must have an effect on the way vulnerable people deal with disputes. i am not suggesting as some have that america is a "gun culture" but i will not hesitate is stating a perverse gun culture permeates its way into so many facets of american life. this is VERY different to the rest of the developed world. and as such, most of us just simply can't understand the likes of the NRA and their "cold dead hand" resistance to any legislation that might make average americans safer from (i cringe to use this word) normal domestic gun violence.

the incident that has recently past is anything from normal, but despite it being the largest massacre of its kind, it is certainly not unprecedented. that is even more a worthwhile investigation. why school rampages? so i suppose there are several separate topics on the chopping block right now.

but let's get back to legislation. you want new legislation, i'll make it easy, no sales or commercial production of weapons with the intended purpose to kill human beings. no one hunts with an uzi, no one needs armor piercing rounds to down a stag. why should average joe be able to buy them?

yes as you have said in previous post, this would not stop the illegal flow of hand guns and automatic weapons, but it would set a precedent for the populace. is there a link between media violence, real life enactment, and the government's acceptance of the blood trade? this is an honest and not rhetorical question. i think there is. many americans (a grand generalization i know) typically like to pride themselves on being anti big government, yet the same big C republicans tend to also be the first to without question obey any command issued from the white house so long as it comes from the right party. what influence does government policy have on the mind set of the average citizen? i tend to believe in america, (especially small town mid west america) a lot.

as you have said previously this is an area, like many others, in which state law mandates regulations; in texas it is legal to be drinking and driving (at the same time) so long as you are not intoxicated, and you can fire a weapon from a moving vehicle. there is no indication that you cannot combine the two activities. in mississippi there is no such crime as attempted murder. i think, correct me if i am wrong but, neither of these examples fit in with the american standard perception of normal. can't the supreme court step in and clean up some of these issues for the benefit of the country? my ignorance in american law shows its self.

yes statistics can be manipulated, and they usually grow tiresome quickly but none the less in this case they deserve some time to contemplate. is there a connection between significantly larger statistics in gun related violence in america, be it the legally purchased or of the black market variety, and the government's, be it state or federal, condolence of the death trade?

would any changes have stopped this event? likely not. could changes positively effect the country and the average person? i think, most certainly yes.

  6. if it were for simply this one run and you had both to choose from, i would take the LBF. but this is for your set up for the run and beyond until you retire the set up.

they are the same weight and although the Jaks are bigger, they are quite similar in dimension as the LBF. you won't be able to carve the chute in the Jaks, but then again you won't to in the Jaks either. i can't see why you would want to slim down you system for simply one run. if it need come to it on the run, you will still be able to do 100m of spiess on your Jaks. that's not worth changing your whole set up for.

i can't see why you would want to use the Jaks on hill, if it were me, they would hence forth be retired skis.

the LBF on the other hand can work as a resort/rock ski and still be a fun crud buster.

The man rose to fame doing 'blood porn' films in the 80's and 90's. If you've ever seen his films you would know what I mean by 'blood porn'. Basically he spends about 60 minutes of a 90 minute movie running around blasting people away with various types of sexy, shiny metal guns and popping out one liners.

    Blood and Guts everywhere.

The mind boggles to think that this is what appealed to the American public so much that he ended up with this office.
Sure, it's only fiction, but not everyone in this world has such a clear idea of what is and isn't fantasy. Almost every phsyco that has committed some kind of mass murder has had a fetish for violence like in Arnold's movies. With an abundant supply of readily available guns and violent entertainment, it's fertile ground for more phsycos.
might be true but he has also turned out to be a rather astute politician. california now has one of the most progressive environmental policies in the world. a little off point, but...
  8. i think rather than addressing the issue of gun laws and registration, a more apt discussion is the perversion of personal freedoms and the pervasiveness of gun culture in the United States.

Samurai, although you do have a bit of a gun fetish, i know you have a healthy attitude towards firearms. and you are right in that people with healthy attitudes towards firearms don't kill people with guns. nor do their kids as the guns are locked up.

however, why is it believed to be a god given right, not a constitutional privilege, to own a firearm? and why are guns so sexy in American media? it certainly isn't hunting.
