Thinking of doing some snowshoeing/boarding in gassan this spring. Can anyone offer advice? has anyone been there? How long are the hikes and are they worth it? All advice and info would be appreciated.

Where have you been going in Yamagata? Shonai doesn't have that much to offer I heard! Do you go to Akita?

It is beautiful sunshine in Yamagata, but the temperatures are still below freezing on the mountain. I just hope it stays that way.

At Zao it is probably 80% gaijin that go out of bounds. We are usually surprised to see Japanese duck the ropes, and they generally get mucho respect from the Local foreigners if they do!
Also they are rarely Yamagata-Jin and more often up from Tokyo. Yamagata people are not the wildest bunch of rule-breakers, so the gaijin have to make up for it.
That said I take full responsibility. If something happens, it will be my fault, not the fault of the ski patrol for putting their barriers in the wrong place. At the end of the day I chose to duck the barriers...its my fault!
But it so much more fun than being on piste!

Does anyone know of a good guide for Hakkoda. I am thinking of going up there soon, and would like to make the most of it. English speaking is preferable but not essential.

Hirafu was a white out, but buckets of powder to make up for it, got some fun footage on Monday morning when it was clear for all of about 30 minutes!
All weekend we were literally choking on the stuff. Beautiful!

Just to let you all know, we had an amazing time in Niseko. Sadly the visibility was pretty bad and we couldn't hike the summit, but deeper powder that I have ever ridden before and an incredible 2 days was had by all.

Absolutely beautiful especially if you know where to look. Great powder under the lifts at Kurohime, Paradise and Skyline. Watch out for irate lift patrollers though! Plenty on piste too, if thats your thing.

I am new to this forum, but have been boarding a while here in Japan. I am going up to Niseko (Hirafu) this weekend and need some advice on how to find all that Legendary powder.
Which areas are best? How much hiking is involved? and in which direction? Should I rent a beeper, shovel etc.. or is it relatively safe?
Any advice would be most welcome
