  1. wow the situation in Hakuba is off the hook? I have a Japanese friend whose husband has had connections at 47 from its very conception or there abouts and was a ski school instructor. She was shocked and horrified to learn I ripped through 47's trees. she was like "oh you mustnt do that its very dangerous and ski patrol will get very angry the absolutely dont/wont tolerate it....etc etc etc.

Well anyway what I saw at Niseko was very good in terms of the Patrol accommodating those of us who desire the "out of bounds"

They have special roped entrance ways to out of bounds areas with warnings in eng and jap with maps saying how it is.

They warn you that you are boldly going to a place where you responsible for yourself. If you get hurt its your problem, if they have to come to rescue you, you will pay (up to 1 million yen in one cited example) for S&R. you must go through the entranceways only, if you duck a rope they will ban you for the season,so they say, and all liftlines are out of bounds with the same consequences.

These last two rules are there I think to stop punters seeing us in the trees and jumping straight in, ducking ropes, or following others who discreetly duck ropes etc.

This way with everyone entering at the designated area you can see the disclaimer read it and make your own decisions.

Children are banned and anyone less than advanced is strongly advised not to go.

It warns and rightly so that beacons are not magic devices and many times they are used to locate dead bodies after avalanches. (Its quite blunt and informed this warning)

And it has areas that are absolutely out of bounds for everyone forever even extreme skiers. which is fair enough.

I think its a good idea, it stops the need to duck ropes and have young inexperienced people follow. It warns everyone of the hazards of where they are going. It allows us to think freely and enjoy ourselves while taking full responsibility for our actions.

  2. Just had 3 days in Niseko, must say that Niseko certainly is good, as good as legend has it? tough call to make. here are some points about the place.

    * the Hirafu Trial map one of the worst out of scale pieces of kiddy drawn garbage I have ever seen, so misleading. For newbies check out the "Niseko Express" magazine and at the back is a real photo with superimposed lift lines. Its a million times better.

*the hike to the summit then the run technically out of bounds but allowed, down the big face then into the trees to the right of Hana 3 quad (as you are riding it) is awesome.

*Strawberries has wicked hits even after the pow is tracked, great natural jumps with soft landings, forget the concrete landings of the table tops.

*The weather is extremely iffy! wow never seen such drastic weather changes! when the weather is really bad further up the weather near bottom of Hanazono is sweet

*morons (not foreigners this time) strap in halfway up the hike to the top and ski under the ropes straight past ski patrol and ignore the patrollers whistles. friggin idiots!.

    * Australians! geez the place is overflowing with Australians!!! heaps of families on holiday, but millions of Australians!

*Souvenirs shops are lame! full of Hello Kitty and cookies. No posters, T Shirts fleeces, stickers etc....come on people what gives!! weak weak weak.

The view on a clear day is worth it! wow Mt Yotei...sugoi! I found out Yotei means Sheeps Hoof! crappy name but what a mountain.

*Miharashidai Hutte has awesome food, expensive but fantastic lunch time food, real food no garbage KFC or Crap Ds good quality food.

  3. Its usually live on NHK BS1 the BS (Broadcast satellite) channel. You need a BS dish to get it.

This is different from CS dish that you get skyperfect on.

its well delayed on Gaora (ch 302 of skyperfect) not even the same day!

BS1 is often broadcast on terrestrial cable TV channels providers like J-Com as (channel 17)

So If you have Skyperfect you are sh*t out of luck as its not live

well of the ski patrollers I know in New Zealand, I can say they they were good guys, there are no trees so thats not a problem , but if they close an area or warn you not to go there, you can trust their judgement fairly soundly. Many of them are very very experienced in the mountains and have highly regarded patrol qualifications.
They command respect and get it from me.

oops sorry Oceans I made a mistake I was in a shop today and realised the bindings I was worried about was not the Burtons but the Shimano Rapidfire ones.
The plastic piece holding the heel just seems rather flimsy and looks like it would pop out on a heavy landing.
I confused them with the Burton SI. I played around with the Burton SI and they seemed pretty solid. How do they perform in the snow?, the seemed a little fiddly to undo, and I wondered how do they perform on the mountain while wearing gloves with snow around them?
  6. neck deep, I kid you not. went over a lip into a gully and came to a complete stop. Had to spend ages digging down to undo my bindings and then lift my board and then "swim" to shallower snow.

Its quite dangerous any deeper and I could of drowned in the snow.

I have heard of guys submarining in the Seirra Nevadas after epic dumps of snow (2m+)and suffocating to death....scarey stuff when you think about it \:\(

  7. If you want to use the camera in the snow then get a quality high end camera and one that has a Dive case available (usually the high end models) Dive cases are brilliant for diving and brilliant for the snow, 100% waterproof and almost indestructible, so they provide awesome protection. You dont have to worry about the camera getting wet or dropping it. On powder days nothing is a problem and even with the case it quite compact.

I have a Sony Cybershot P9, an awesome camera, takes really good movies too as well as photos.

Dive cases are a little pricey (15-20000yen) but worth it and if you are a scuba diver they are fantastic.

try the occasional bit of ramp maintainance so there isnt a rutted ice track for an entrance...
or actually "bumping" the chairs, holding it to take the initial "heat" of the chair instead of whacking into you calves if you dont bump it youself, they do it in others countries.....
And the number one thing.......GROUPING people!!!!on busy days so the chairs are going up loaded and people get more snow time in....

I was once a liftie at a major resort and god help me if had been caught sitting the shack with my feet up. My buddy was once working the top station of a quad and was relaxing in the shack when the CEO of the entire resort came up the chair on his day off and saw him chillin' in the lift shack.....he got a serious lambasting to say the least.
