The 54th Sapporo Snow Festival is set to run February 5-11. Attracting visitors from all over the globe, the festival is located in Odori Park in the heart of Sapporo, and boasts a fantastic array of ice sculptures. Sculptures vary in
size from one metre, up to over three storeys in height. Created with ice and snow, by a range of international artists, the collection is breathtaking - especially at night!
Sapporo weather can be cold, and the wind often biting, so warm clothing is a must.
Good information is obtainable at:
http://www.snowfes.com/english/index_e.html
Last year warm weather resulted in melting, and festival organizers were battling to stop the limbs of various creatures from falling off. This season temperatures are down, so the statues will be at their best. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the region...

They are supposed to indicate relative size of resorts.
But are independant between maps.
With questions like this, can you please direct them in future to us directly at editor@snowjapan.com. That will ensure us seeing your questions and a response from us to you by email.
Thanks

We'd just like to bring up a few points about uploading and linking to member photos on the Forums. While we actively encourage you to upload photos and utilise your member pages, we have been having a few problems with some users uploading extremely large images. We are looking into ways around the following issues (and hope to bring you news about that soon) but for now.....
UPLOADING PHOTOS:
If you are uploading photos to your Member pages on Snow Japan, keep try to keep the size (weight) of the photos as small in size as possible. We would appreciate it if all photos are kept to below 50KB as a general rule. If you do not know how to get your photos down to a smaller size, please feel free to send them to us at editor@snowjapan.com and we will reduce their size and then send them back to you by email.
LINKING TO MEMBER PAGE PHOTOS:
As you probably know, it is possible to have photos and images appear within a thread on this Forum. However, for the time being, please refrain from bringing in photos that are on Snow Japan member pages into the forum...... Instead, you can paste the URL of the members page into the post - then people who want to see the photo can go to that member page to see it.
Thanks for your cooperation on these matters.

miteyak - thanks for the comments.
The info provided, as we said before, is all either coming from people living in those areas, or (in the case of the weather forecasts) from official Japanese weather data sources (the exact same data that is also used by large TV stations, weather forecasts, newspapers, etc etc).
oo - thanks. And no, it certainly doesn't come cheap.

Yes, sorry about that.
Since we launched the new site and then the Japanese site on 22nd (which was 3 weeks later than originally planned), time has just gone so fast and we've been busier than expected with one thing and another. Meaning that our original plans of having an official get-together in December have not materialised unfortunately.
We do plan for something in the New Year though, so keep your eyes open.
Many thanks!

There always seems to be some deaths at resorts.
Just in this region, last year there was a fatal accident at GALA here in Yuzawa, and another at Ishiuchi Maruyama the season before.
Here's a post from last season about the death at GALA:

It is not the easiest to write things that may be interesting when there is no snow and the resorts there are 2 weeks from opening. We will be doing our best to provide the best information we have as the season gets going.

SNOW JAPAN - JAPANESE FORUMS
Our new Japanese forums are now online and ready to go! You can get there by clicking on the JAPANESE FORUM link at the top right of any page of the English forums.
Just a few points:
- if you want to use the Japanese forums using the same handle you use on this English forum, you will have to register in the Japanese forum in order to do that.
- as the Japanese forum is brand spanking new, at first there may not be much activity on there at all! We are going to do our best to spread the word around with some marketing of the J site, but everything will help. Please do help if you can by telling your Japanese friends about it as we try to build a new community over there. We are hoping for crossover between the 2 forums/sites in the coming months and years, making everything more fun for all.
Any help is of course greatly appreciated.
Many thanks again for using Snow Japan!
----------------------
PLEASE NOTE: The Japanese Snow Japan site will be going online later this afternoon - so until then if you click on the HOME buttons in the Japanese forum, it will take you to a "page not found".....once the site is online this will correct itself.

To submit resort rankings, names and email addresses are now not necessary.

If we feel the system gets abused, this might change but for now you can submit votes simply.

Hardly any snow in town level Yuzawa right now, just up in the mountains. Looks like there might be some snow on it's way tonight though.
We are just about 1 minute walk from the station.

We are planning to have a simple chat function on the site from December..........
