  1. The tabloids are throwaway and lightweight (both physically and in terms of content), plus cheap. You can spend your 10-20p, flip through the pictures, read maybe 100 words and then leave it on the train with satisfaction.

The broadsheets require more commitment of time to get value for money.

Additionally, many people are too dim to read a lot and so they would never consider a broadsheet.

  2. I used to see my Dad maybe twice a year as a kid. I haven't seen him for maybe 10 years now and don't know his address etc though I guess I could find him if I wanted to. I'm much closer to my mum, though the relationship is superficially cold and I call her by her first name. I think I missed out on a lot as a kid but its great for my kids because I will give them the upbringing I never had.

Myself I have been thinking (obsessing) about getting old the past month like I never have before. It's cos I got 2 babies and am approaching 30, which feels like a big milestone. I'll go read some Camus. \:\)

  3. The guy I knew who built houses said his business took off after the Kobe quake. why? because he took a photo of a neighourhood wher all the houses were levelled bar one - the one he built (canadian style wood frame). after that there was a boom for his business buildilng those houses, but the japanese soon caugth on and started to do it too - cutting corners on the way, leading to bad rep. for those houses and he went out of business.

  4. I dont want to be contrary but that totally contradicts what I have heard about the building industry in Japan. I know a gaijin guy who ran a construction business and he was totally jaded about the way the Japanese run their businesses - no concern for safety, no problem with total lying and stealing.

This guy also talks about this issue: http://www.debito.org/housebuilding.html

Maybe u in a smaller community so it's impossible to survive if one does that kind of sneaky work. In Kansai/Kanto its a different story I believe.

  5. Actually I think even expensive homes here are lower quality than basic housing in the UK. Mansions may be a different story.

Somehow the teenagers here seem to find something to do which doesn't involve vandalism. OK, a small number may ride stupid noisy bikes, but thats about the extent of it. I wonder how they spend their time actually.

I don't understand leaving the door unlocked. If you are not in, they shouldn't go in your house. If you are in, you can leave it unlocked or let them ring the bell. Its not just burglary, people can come in and rape too, I think you better lock the door.

Seperate issue: People not wearing shoes in the house! Thats the best.

  6. It's not as safe as it seems. I know of 3 people who have been burgled in daytime.

And in Osaka I saw a salaryman get beat up in front of at least 200 people in the main shopping area by a group of roadworker characters, then they threw him in their van and drove off. (an aside: everyone just stared at this for about 10mins without doing anything. I was lookign to see if anyone was calling the cops (I had not phone at that time) but no-one did).

But I agree with the general comment that it feels safer here. The absence of aggressive adolescents is the main reason, and beer-ed up gangs of 40 year olds who should know better.

  7. "And let`s get the facts right, if we are going to ban ciggies then we should definately ban alcohol. Causes far more social problems and far more deaths per year than any smoking ever does. Alcohol is by far the most harmful and dangerous drug. "

    ...sssh! dont tell anyone!

Seriously though, tabacco is worse than alcohol (for me) because it is so much more invasive of your personal space.
