'Confessions of a Yakuza' is really good.
-
The only other James Clavell I read was 'King Rat' - it was excellent but didn't have the emotional impact of Shogun.
-
I second 'Shogun' - that is my favourite book ever! not just japan-related.
4.5/5 star rating on Amazon from 296 readers:

So much of what happens to Anjin-san is comparable to what happens us coming over today.
The best thing about it is the ambiguity of the characters. There's no good or bad guys! Everyone is out for themself, they just have different ways of going about it - just like real life.

You mean in 'Romaji' right?
You can get manga books in english, they sometimes have bits of original japanese in them. But I cant imagine anyone publishing books in romaji, it doesnt make sense really. If you had the vocab to understand the words then you would surely be able to read the kanji or at least kana of the words. You are too niche for the publishers

This can happen to any of us at any time, enjoy your time and be thankful for your health!

This gives an incredible incentive to fly BA, because the regular Heathrow terminals make you feel more like you have arrived in Calcutta than London.
-
That was very very good - Torres is White Hot now.
Imagine if all the premier teams got drawn together next round? Liverpool seem to do well against the bigger teams, so Im hoping we get Barca or Roma. I can imagine us taking Fenebache or shalke lightly and getting knocked out.
Mancini says he is leaving Inter at the end of the season and BBC News suggesting Mourinho could be the man to take over there.

Watched Bruce Webers 'A Letter to True' last night.
Very pensive and emotional 'movie' (this is not a traditional movie, more like poems being read over some photographs).

Quote:The cost of the application -- 8,000 yen -- is only paid if the application is successful.
This is better than, say, Australia where they charge you thousands of dollars just to apply for a work visa. My wife also paid a fortune for her student visa to come to the UK. We also paid a fortune to the UK embassy to register my daughters birth. So Japan seems to still be naive to the profitability - I guess this is one area where 'no change' works in our favour.
Quote:While permanent residents need not ever apply for a visa again, they must, like regular foreign residents, get re-entry permits before they leave the country.
In a way, whats the point of having it then? Its just a stamp of approval and nothing more. You still have to pay the gaijin tax and jump hoops every 3 years. -
Sometimes if you spam the keypad that also works. just keep hitting 0 over and over again angrily.

In the UK at least I think it is extremely difficult to say the media is racist.

When I was 18 I had a great night in the desert in western India looking at the stars with a babe on my arm That was probably the most isolated spot I've ever been in my life.
-
theres always that feeling of 'maybe my call didnt get directed properly and i am just waiting eternally in some kind of technical vacuum'
-
Portsmouth will win it now most probably.
Newcastle looked quite poor I have to say. The commentators kept saying how Owen and Smith looked like they were playing in uncomfortable positions. Owen got one kick all game and Smith made tons of mistakes. Its actually gone beyond a joke and starting look like they could actually go down now.
Torres and Gerrard were on fire last night. Cant wait for the Inter game!

oo, sounds good. i always thought it took like 15 years. if i end up staying in japan nex year ill have to get me one.
-
I got a 3 yr spouse visa a few months back. I was on a 1-year on my first year, then straight away I got a 3 year.
So I can apply for PR now or I have to wait until the 3-year is gonna expire?

Quote:I think it goes hand in hand with "common sense" which I dont think Japanese have either.
Well this itself is borderline racist I would say.
Not that I condemn you for it, I actually agree, but we cant throw stones when we live in glass houses. -
I'm not really thinking of applying, but just wondered how long you had to be in Japan etc to get a PR.
I looked on this page, which seems the be the governments offical info on it:
http://www.immi-moj.go.jp/english/tetuduki/zairyuu/eizyuu.html
If you read it, it gives zero solid information about how to get PR. Its like it has been written by an 8 year old. I genuinely think they have made it as difficult to read and understand as possible. They migt as well just say 'if we like you, you are in - just apply and take your chance'

my theory is that the government has some weird law in place to force construction companies into employing people in this way. i presume they are allowed to pay them total peanuts to do the job. in doing do, it gets the otherwise homeless off the streets and out of trouble, and removes the burden from the government of paying income support. -
the chopsticks thing is just japanese trying to be nice. if anything it is the opposite of racism - they are trying to befriend you.
racism is something like openly being aggresive to someone based on their race. or, saying nothing and not employing them. i guess the latter occurs here, towards other asians or burakumin, but they are no worse at this than in say the UK.

I want to know the stats. Who is the most popular?
-
A few days ago I was in the middle of nowhere, just some everyday intersection with no construction around, basically just rice fields, and one of those baton-wavers was stood there. He wasnt waving any traffic, just standing there watching the occasional car pass. 4 hours later on my way home he was still there.
I concluded he either:
- has a very very weird hobby
- is mentally ill
- is some kind of spy from north korea who got lost

Quote:Watanabe apparently works as a DJ in the club where he attacked Scott. He held him by his throat while hitting him and the report suggests that Scott may have died from strangulation. Watanabe is reported to have said "I went too far".
I'd really like the full force of Japanese law to come down on this guy - he should be made to bow *at least* 35 degrees when saying sorry to the victims family.
