  1. Well so far the silent majority seems to have it.

I must say Im surprised. After quite a few years in Japan I was almost convinced that all foreigners were trouble makers, Ill have to rethink that. Its looking like the majority are voting for the dont break the rules option. It seems like most people consider under lift riding to be a bit of a wanker pastime, Japanese resorts and Snow Japan readers alike.

No comment on the rights or wrongs of it from me though. No doubt there are plenty of perfectly safe roped off areas out there but thats not the question.

Never mind... theres heaps of fresh snow out there!

I wonder which option I should vote for.......

  2. yep it sure looks pretty from the comfort of the adjacent lifted resort. Most people climb it in spring when its certainly accessable on a nice day to anyone with moderate skills and basic backcountry knowhow and gear.

Winter is a different story. If you are planning to climb in winter you can expect nut sack deep powder (thats with snowshoes or skis on) on the lower slopes and bullet proof ice, probably accompanied by wind, near the top. It gets steeper as you go up and youll definately need crampons and possibly a pickel to summit.

Unless you are fit and have some climbing skills and good partners you can forget about strolling to the top and having a carefree float down.

If you are really keen to have a go at it get in touch with a local guide company, most guides dont take tours to the summit in winter(I climbed 1000m when I went with a sapporo guide company) but theyll show you some good spots to ride and rent

you gear if you need it.

  3. I can understand resorts being a little aprehensive about their area becoming off piste training areas. They are in a situation of being partially responsible particularly if you are within the resort area. If you are riding in between lifts etc. they have every reason to be concerned especially with the stories like we see above with gumby riders wallowing in snow for hours trying to get out of spots within sight of the resort.

Areas like niseko have huge alpine areas above them and they make it quite clear where their resposibility ends.

You still see plenty of avalanche poodles heading out to test the snow for everyone up there.

If you want to ride off piste why dont you just hire a guide and do it properly and stop pissing off ski patrol.

  4. As the weather patterns that bring snow to Japan come from the north west you will find that whilst it is cold in Kushiro to amount of snow is far far less than in the western parts of Hokkaido

most moisture in the air is lost as it travels over the Tokachi range. Furthermore there isnt a lot east of kushiro in terms of mountainous terrain to ski on.... its quite flat really.

Translation: youre out of luck unless you go west from kushiro.

  5. Theres something majorly wrong when criminals are allowed to deliberately engineer dangerous drugs to make them more addictive and then get away with addicting millions of their fellow human beings. These scum get rewarded with riches while a simple man with a natural plant growing in his garden can get taken away and locked up.

    It makes me mad.

I dunno Ive been called a roo shagger a couple of times.
I have a few kiwi mates who like to pat all their pockets like theyve lost their wallet and then say they were just practicing the aussie haka.

Then theres the criminal gags that come up on account of a lot of aussies being descended from convicts.
There ya go mate, have a go with those if youre stuck for ideas.
  7. Rooting!! Its unbelievable. rooting is quite a popular subject all over the world.

I saw on TV that the trend in Iraq now is selling videos of people rooting. Previously banned by Mr Evil. Im not too sure what to make of it.

Make love Not war! And dont forget to tape it!!!
