  1. I like the Japanes toilets well enough for a good refreshing dump, and I've not missed the target yet. Though it's plain to see many others have.

As for the slippers, I always wonder if the ones forced upon you at public places harbor the plantar wart virus. Especially slippers that are still warm from the last customer.

You're probably better off wearing socks to protect your feet, on those days when you may end up having to put your dogs into those horrible public slippers.

I worry about warts and foot fungus in onsens too. I suppose one could bring flip-flops and wear those around, except inside the bath itself.

Ever had to have a wart frozen off your foot? It usually takes several painful visits, each with about 5-7 days of blistered agony as the thing fills with pus and blood, then bursts inside your shoes.

Socks. An easy way to avoid this fate.

  2. Just thinking about PE and my old high school's Spanish teacher who also was Asst. Swimming Coach and that almost-transparent Speedo racesuit she wore and how she used to get out of the water and stand on the edge of the pool demonstrating strokes as water dripped off different exciting parts of her body as we floated helplessly in the water gaping up at her...

    Oh, mesomorphy

    Oh, mesomorhpy

    Oh, mesomorphy

    Me love you long time!

  3. Yeah, I'm with Ocean on the music thing.

Even after two decades of bars, dance clubs, outdoor raves, solo car stereo jamming sessions and assorted ear-drum workouts, I still love my own loud music and even some loud music selected by others...it does give me things and can psyche me up for this or that...maybe when listened to privately the night before.

But I've never enjoyed any music, loud or not, while skiing or boarding. In fact I hate it with a passion. I can take a bit of mellow stuff on the ride home, but just to relax and pass the time.

I did a lot of wakeboarding this summer, and the people who own/drive the boat are always burning new CDs full of "core" music to blast at full volume on the water so nobody can think, talk or relax. I just don't get it. It makes the whole thing so unpleasant. You aren't allowed to turn it off or even suggest that it might not be "GREAT!" so you learn to just ignore it as best as you can. I even brought out earplugs one time. That helped.

When you pass another boat, they turn up their tunes too so you can hear how cool they are. You can almost see the Mountain Dew - X-Games - Snickers Bar - Chevy Trucks linkups floating in front of your cool-core-genX-genY-Xtreme-surf/skate/snow/BMX/MotoX/BigAir/XYZ-Cross jaded eyes...

When I lay this rant on people around here, a lot of them roll their eyes and say "Being 40 years old really sucks, bro!" and that is a fair comment, but I hated this intrusive loud music thing even back in high school.

I guess I just like peace and quiet too much for some action sports venues.

  4. Siren, all true but not as bad as you would think! Skiers wear this type of boot and have for decades. I did myself until 1994. They never fit right and they always hurt...and when I bitched about it, I always heard that a proper fitting, footbed, moldable liner or etc. would have made all the difference.

The custom bootfitting threads come around fairly regularly on this site, but until now they've been limited to skiers, with only scattered hoots and catcalls from soft-boot snowboarders chortling over having left all that pain-and-pressure-point stuff behind years ago when they gave up skiing.

    Ahem.

Now look at us wannabe hardbooters...it seems we can now enjoy the added expense and trouble of chasing down the right kind of custom footbeds, moldable liners, recommended bootfitters and so forth, just like skiers.

I vote for a new thread on hardboot fittings. This is getting complicated!

  5. karnage, you may be right. I was just trying to stir up trouble.

Actually, only natural-born US citizens can be President or Vice-President.

However, a non-natural US citizen could be Speaker of the House, which position is (I think) 3rd in line for the Presidency. Remember Al Haig on the day Reagan was shot? "I'm in charge here!"

So if Arnold is elected Speaker of the House, and then the Pres. and VP both quit or are incapacitated, then Arnold could be President.

Sounds like a great movie plot for the next Schwarzenegger flick.

    What a country!

And there are always (even now) bills on the floor to change the requirement about being a natural-born US citizen (Article II of the US Constitution)...for example some propose that after 20 or 35 years of US citizenship, even "foreigners" can be President or Vice-President.

  6. Hi Siren

I'm no expert myself, and, frankly speaking, you are ahead of me in that you already bought an alpine/carving board \:D

But you may wish to check out the BomberOnline site for basic as well as technical info, and friendly message boards where you can ask questions and get answers from people who've been there/done that.

They really are a supportive bunch...erm...in fact, they are all crazy. Because of this, I am putting in my application to join them as soon as I can scrape together the funds for the right kit...

Their "New Carver Welcome Center" has a collection of articles on basic stuff relating to gear and technique that might be of interest to you.

How about posting back here on the SJ site if you find anything particularly useful? I know I and Ocean 11 are thinking about getting a hardboots setup, and would welcome advice/anecdotes about how it all goes from A to Z.

    Cheers,

    badmigraine.

  7. Ocean, about the hard boots heh heh. I think it's going to be all about the money.

Frankly speaking I don't even know if snowboard hardbooters are supposed to just buy certain favored types of ski boots, or whether there are snowboard-specific hardboots that work with the plate bindings such as Catek...

I think you're probably going to end up considering online shopping, because if your town is like my town, then there is no store with a full selection of alpine snowboading boots.

A good place to order from is the Blue Tomato site ...click on the Pommy flag upper right to change from German into English, unless du kannst deutsch. I heard Raichle makes good hard boots for snowboarders and they seem to be favored on the bomberonline.com site and message boards.

The Raichle brand is in transition right now: they went under but their parent company, Kneissl, shifted the snowboard boot line to its Deeluxe brand...Deeluxe also makes soft boots, but their hard boots are apparently exactly the same as the Raichle boots...only the brand name has changed. You can check out their fairly cool website here . The LeMans and the Spa look rather nice actually.

Distribution networks are probably stuttering over this corporate/accounting sleight-of-hand development right now and I couldn't find a US distributor very easily online, hence the Austrian site Blue Tomato.

As far as sizing goes, since these DeeLux boots are probably sized exactly like Raichle boots, you may want to try on some Raichle ski boots at your local ski shop (heh...do they have any where you live now?) to figure out your "Raichle" size, then order online.

Just an idea. Always like to encourage people to spend more and more on snow equipment...

If you find any interesting links on what are proper boots for alpine boarders and reviews of bindings etc., please post them. I need to know this too and am thinking about getting the basic kit. I'll try it if you will!

Nils, any advice or links on boots and bindings for ignorant neophyte carvers who have Visa Cards?

    Cheers from slowly congealing Michigan.

  8. Thanks Ocean. For me, it's knees and elbows that take the beating up at the skatepark... I am 40 you know.

But I never made it. My sister called from the boat and invited me wakeskating... I brought along my surfboard and had a go at trying to surf off the wake, with poor results but no injuries.

Then I got on the wakeskate and had a series of smackdown faceplants. That and 14-degree water ended it all quickly. The final blow was turning on my laptop and getting the message "Operating System Not Found" accompanied by three continuous space-invaders type beeps...turns out the removable hard drive was loose.

    Goodnight.

  9. Hey Nils-

Speaking of swallowtail boards, do you know about Gentem boards (a custom maker in Niseko)?

They've got a couple swallowtails in their lineup and you can read all about it here on the Gentem website .

I know an Australian guy who lives in Niseko and rides one. He used to be a race-car driver, and to see him arcing mach-speed turns through powder on his Gentem stick is truly a thrilling sight to behold.

Damn! All this talk about snow, carving and gear is driving me crazy. I may have to go up to the skateboard park or something, just to make it through the day!

  10. Ocean, in addition to the Donek reviews at Snowboard Reviews.com , there are more written by carvers at Bomberonline.com 's reviews page.

Hope you do get a hardboot setup this year. It's about time someone on this site did.

Actually, I'm dreaming of it myself, and with the bulletproof ice/groomed hardpack conditions here in Michigan, I really have no excuse except lack of funds...

Until then, some drooly porn...the Donek Axis. What color topsheet would YOU get?:

  11. Nils, thanks! Great first post.

It's truly amazing that you found your way here using only server stats...I didn't know people could do that.

I think I'll make a post that links to my favorite pornographic site...maybe the girls will notice the server stats, and then contact me personally...

Seriously, I find your website fascinating and I'd love to try your "less is more" philosophy and learn to carve like that. It looks like pure adrenaline.

Can you also just ride the rest of the mountain on your Swoard boards? How do they perform in powder, and in bumpy or uneven conditions?

I assume hard boots and plate bindings are required?

On your site you mentioned that flex would better come from a boot flex adjustment system, rather than simple pressure deformation of the boot plastic or shell.

  12. Does anybody have a computer that makes noises like the computers in movies do?

That fast incessant keyboard rattle when someone is typing in something.

Whenever you hit the "Enter" key, it goes BEEEEEP!

How about the whispery clicking sounds that letters make as they appear on the screen, like the sound of a centipede walking across a snare drum?

Another movie-type feature I'm still waiting for is full-screen chat with giant fonts. In the middle of putzing around on the Internet, your screen goes black, then giant words appear: "HELLO. I'VE BEEN WATCHING YOU..."

Who knew there was all this great stuff you could do with computers, but nobody does it except in the movies? Mogski suggested scratch-and-sniff screens for porn sites, and I haven't seen anyone get that one yet either.
