  1. I've decided to go to the Hakuba area Dec 23-25 with the wife. Its interesting to hear the complaints about Happo and 47. I am not a park rat, either. Freeride. Wife is newbie. Three days though, we don't have to go to the same park. That early in the season, should I shop around over those three days? Sounds like people like Cortina and Tsugaike as well. Would Happo be bad for a newbie?

Happo can be very bad for a newbie boarder if it hasn't snowed because there are many moguls.

  2. I did this drive a few times last season. I have snow tyres but no chains, also my car is a pajero junior(mini) so its selective 4wd only. I did the drive in December, January, February and March and the only time i used 4WD was in Jan and Feb. The highway is pretty staight forward and you should be fine with snow tyres. The drive north from Hakuba to the Hokuriku highway can be a bit sketchy. I took this route twice because of the chou highway being closed in Jan. The most direct route is the chou from Nagoya. If you are renting a car you can request snow tyres for a small additional fee.

  3. After visiting Kiyomizu head north(right) instead of going back down to the main road there is a narrow pathway that leads down some stairs and along a street wtith more boutique type shops. There are also a couple more very nice temples in this area. If you wanted to spend a day visting temples I think its a good area to see a few with having to waste half your day traveling around on buses from one side of the city to the other.

  4. Kyoto is always really busy this time of year. Normally with a young family the bus would be a good option but with the crowds I would probably them. Even if you can get on the bus when its not too busy if it fills up it can be a mission to get off. The subway doesn't get as crowded but also doesn't go to as many of the popular tourist spots. I think a good option would be taking a taxi to whichever temple you want to visit, then walk/see the temples in that area. Most of the taxis work on flat rate for the first 2 km so they are still more expensive than the bus but can be a lot more comfortable and faster. If your family gets tired of temples and you get a chance to go by yourself then definitely rent a bicycle. Even when Kyoto isn't busy bicycles are faster than the buses.
