Mikawa Onsen is a ski area located in the Mikawa neighbourhood of Aga Town in the northern Kaetsu region of Niigata Prefecture.
This ski area has four pair lifts and the longest course is 1,550m.
The ski area is close to the onsen hot springs of the same name and one of the closest ski areas to Niigata City.
Snowfall can be unpredictable and inconsistent in this region of Niigata. Mikawa Onsen ski area could not open during the unseasonably warm 2019-2020 winter. That marked the third time it could not operate during a winter season since initially opening in 1982. (The other two years were 1988 and 2006).
Unfortunately, the 2023-2024 season only lasted for several days. The ski area originally hoped to be open from 23rd December until 3rd March, but it could only open 24th-27th December 2023. Beyond that date, there was not enough snow and the ski area officially gave up on the season as of 31st January 2024.

Introduction to the region
Niigata Prefecture is located in the Chubu region of the main island of Honshu, and it is commonly associated with the Hokuriku subregion. The long Niigata coastline faces the Sea of Japan, and the prefecture borders Yamagata Prefecture, Fukushima Prefecture, Gunma Prefecture, Nagano Prefecture, and Toyama Prefecture.
Niigata played a significant role in the history of skiing in Japan. After Hokkaido and Nagano Prefecture, it is currently home to the third-most ski areas in Japan.
The ski areas of Niigata are scattered across the mountainous regions of the prefecture, and there is even one on Sado Island. The majority can be found in Yuzawa Town and Minamiuonuma City in the Chuetsu region and Myoko City in the Joetsu region.
Aga Town is located to the east of Niigata City in the northern Kaetsu region of the prefecture. It was established in 2005 when Tsugawa Town, Kanose Town, Mikawa Village and Kamikawa Village merged. In the past, there were more ski areas nearby, but currently Mikawa Onsen is the only ski area operating in the town.
