Hijiri Kogen is a ski area located in Omi Village, southwest of central Nagano city in the northern region of Nagano Prefecture.
The northern facing slopes of this small ski area are close to Lake Hijiri, at an elevation of over 1,000m. It has one pair lift and three ski runs that are all less than 300m in length. The snow on one course is sometimes left ungroomed.
At one time Hijiri Kogen was known as Hijiri Kogen Dai 1 (Number 1) and there was a second area called Hijiri Kogen Dai 2 (Number 2). The second area was also known as Suzuran due to its location close to the lake of the same name.
The ski area usually aims to open in late December. It struggled with low snowfall during the 2023-2024 season, when it was only able to open from mid-January.
The two were effectively treated as one ski area, even though they were separated by 5km of winding roads. Unfortunately, Hijiri Kogen Dai 2 (Suzuran) closed in the early 1990s, leaving just the original ski area. More information on Hijiri Kogen Dai 2 can be found on SnowJapanHistory.

Introduction to the region
Nagano Prefecture is located in the Chubu region of the main island of Honshu. It is one of only eight landlocked prefectures in Japan, bordered by Niigata, Gunma, Saitama, Yamanashi, Shizuoka, Aichi, Gifu, and Toyama.
Nagano Prefecture is sometimes referred to as 'the roof of Japan' because of the steep, rugged terrain of the many 2,000-3,000m mountains that comprise the Japan Alps. The Northern Alps are located along the northwestern region bordering Gifu and Toyama. The Central Alps are in the southwestern region, and the Southern Alps are along the southeastern border.
After Hokkaido, Nagano Prefecture is home to the second-largest number of ski areas in Japan. It has multiple world-class winter sports resorts within its boundaries, and some were venues for the main events of the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. There are ski areas throughout the mountains of Nagano Prefecture, but the majority are in the northern and central regions.
Hijiri Kogen is the only ski area currently operating in Omi Village.
