Hida Nagareha is a ski area located in Hida City in the northern region of Gifu Prefecture.

There has been skiing in this region since the last 1930s. However, it was 1959 before Hida Nagareha ski area officially opened and 1960 when it installed the first ski lift. By the 1980s, there were as many as 12 ski lifts.

One 1,154m quad lift and five pair lifts are currently operating at Hida Nagareha. Two of the lifts (Number 11 and 12) are on the other side of the summit, reached by the Number 10 lift. The ski area describes that top area as 'like another world' with impressive views of the Northern Alps. A few course areas are left ungroomed.

In 2004, Hida Nagareha took on the name Star Spur Ryokufu Resort Hida Nagareha, but in recent years it seems to have reverted back to the original name.

Introduction to the region

Gifu Prefecture is located in central Japan and is one of only eight landlocked prefectures in the country. It is surrounded by seven other prefectures: Aichi, Mie, Shiga, Fukui, Ishikawa, Toyama and Nagano.

All the ski areas in Gifu Prefecture are in the northern mountainous regions of the Prefecture, in Gujo City, Takayama City and Hida City.

Six ski areas in Gujo City recently joined together for promotional purposes under the Takasu Mountains brand. (Takasu is the name of a neighbourhood in Gujo City. In 2004, Takasu Village merged with several other towns and villages to form the current city). That area is particularly popular with people visiting from Nagoya and Osaka. Train links are not particularly convenient, so most people travel by car or bus.

Hida Nagareha is one of 2 ski areas currently operating in Hida City.
