Owani Onsen is a ski area located in Owani Town in the southern region of Aomori Prefecture.
This ski area has a long history. It opened in 1923, and over the decades, it has been a famous ski area in Japan, enjoying several firsts and hosting national ski events.
There used to be two main sections to the ski area called Ajara Kogen and Owani Kokusai. In the 1990s, there used to be a gondola lift, a quad lift, six pair lifts and one single lift. Unfortunately, the ski area ran into difficulties post-bubble era, and the Ajara Kogen area has been closed since 2010.
In recent years, three pair lifts (557m, 864m and 506m) remain open at the modern-day Owani Onsen. They were all part of Owani Kokusai, now known as the Kokusai Area.
Owani Onsen has a few official off-piste course areas in the upper section, a 70m ski jump and ski shrine in the central section and a cross-country course near the base.

Introduction to the region
Aomori Prefecture is located in the Tohoku region on the northwestern side of Honshu. It is the most northerly Prefecture of Honshu, and the Tsugaru Strait separates it from Hokkaido. Akita Prefecture and Iwate Prefecture share a border with Aomori to the south.
There are ski areas across Aomori, with the most well-known probably being on the slopes of the Hakkoda mountain range. This location is about 20km south of Aomori City. It is famous for backcountry tours, unforgiving weather, and 'juhyou' (frost-covered trees, also known as 'snow monsters'). The other larger-scale operation in the prefecture is Aomori Spring Ski Resort in Ajigasawa Town.
Many of the other ski areas in Aomori Prefecture are small operations.
Owani Onsen is the only ski area currently operating in Owani Town.
