Madako Onsen is a ski area located in Noheji Town in the eastern region of Aomori Prefecture.

The ski area is located about 2km from the Noheji Bay coastline in the northern region of the town.

Madako Onsen has three pair lifts (307m, 557m and 830m) and a 200m 'carry lift' in the base area.

Madako Onsen ski area did not be open during the 2022-2023 winter season due to structural damage from heavy rains in late August 2022.

It appears to be planning on re-opening for the 2025-2026 season, but not the Alpen course.

Introduction to the region

Aomori Prefecture is located in the Tohoku region on the northwestern side of Honshu. It is the most northerly Prefecture of Honshu, and the Tsugaru Strait separates it from Hokkaido. Akita Prefecture and Iwate Prefecture share a border with Aomori to the south.

There are ski areas across Aomori, with the most well-known probably being on the slopes of the Hakkoda mountain range. This location is about 20km south of Aomori City. It is famous for backcountry tours, unforgiving weather, and 'juhyou' (frost-covered trees, also known as 'snow monsters'). The other larger-scale operation in the prefecture is Aomori Spring Ski Resort in Ajigasawa Town.

Many of the other ski areas in Aomori Prefecture are small operations.

Makado Onsen is the only ski area currently operating in Noheji Town.
