Gionyama is a ski area located in the southern region of Ugo Town in the southern region of Akita Prefecture.

This ski area has two rope tow lifts and has apparently been operating for about 50 years. It is run by locals and the lifts are free to use.

Beyond the top lift, there is a 'hike up' area with a steeper slope coming down than the main area.

Very little other information about this ski area is available, either official or otherwise. (As such, some information on this page may not be current).

One curious point is that the ski lift operator huts are old-fashioned telephone boxes!

Introduction to the region

Akita Prefecture is located in the Tohoku region, on the northwestern side of the main island of Japan, facing the Sea of Japan.

Akita shares borders with Aomori Prefecture to the north, Iwate Prefecture to the east, Miyagi Prefecture to the southeast and Yamagata Prefecture to the south.

The ski areas in Akita Prefecture are distributed across the mountains from north to south. Two of the more well-known ski areas are Tazawako, on the western slopes of Mt Akita-Komagatake in Semboku City, and Ani, on the southwestern slopes of Mt Moriyoshi in Kitaakita City.

Most of the other ski areas in Akita Prefecture are small local operations.
