Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 18cm Snowfall at base this season 359cm Posted on Thursday 18th February 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Snow started falling yesterday morning. And it continued through the day - and it was coming down hard as well for quite a lot of the time. Result? Another 18cm of fresh snow outside my place. (I actually thought it would be more than that). Kagura reported 30cm of fresh snowfall during the day on their blog, and this morning just going with 5-10cm since last night (meaning that if you didn't read the blog bit, you'd think it was just 5-10cm rather than 35-40cm! I know if I had a ski-jo, I'd be shouting out about these numbers especially in a season like this!) This morning Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 15-20cm of fresh snow. But anyway, excellent. These snowfalls are what feels like 'normal' for us! The snow eased off late last night and the skies cleared, leaving us with a beautiful clear blue sky early morning. It's going to be a very fine day with sun forecast and temperatures to rise to perhaps 6-7 degrees. That means that early tracks this morning should be fantastic pretty much wherever you choose to go - perhaps just more fantastic in higher places. Depending on just how much it does warm up this afternoon, conditions may change later on. So, get out there early and make the most of it! Tomorrow should also be generally good clear weather as well by the way. (I'll deal with the weekend weather in the report tomorrow - in the meantime do take a look at the forecast below for that). --- Resort official snow depths (Wednesday 17th February 2016) and any specific news at time of writing: Not updated today as it's too early - this data will be updated again tomorrow. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 364cm Posted on Monday 22nd February 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Hello and good morning from Yuzawa where there's some fresh snow on the ground. We had to put up with rain for quite a bit of yesterday down in town level though I hear it was snowing at times at higher elevations. Down here as well it was trying to snow at times, and by evening it eventually did turn into snow - and we have 5cm of new snow on the ground this morning. Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 5-10cm of snowfall and Kagura are reporting 5cm, so it looks like you can expect around 5cm of fresh out there on the slopes this morning. Obviously that's not as much as we would have liked and not enough to totally refresh conditions, but an improvement. It has still been snowing since I got up, but is expected to ease off any time now leaving us with a mostly cloudy day. We might get to see some sunshine tomorrow morning along with the seemingly ever-present 'warmer than average' temperatures, rising to around +6 or +7C. Good news is we should be back to snow on Wednesday and some decent snowfall is currently on the forecast for later on Friday as well, so fingers crossed! --- Recently it has been getting noticeable how the days appear to be getting longer and it getting darker later on. --- Resort official snow depths (Monday 22nd February 2016) and any specific news at time of writing: Resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa 160cm Ishiuchi Maruyama 120cm Iwappara 130cm Joetsu Kokusai 160cm Kagura 160cm (Mitsumata) 190cm (Tashiro) 220cm (Kagura) Kandatsu Kogen 120-140cm Maiko Snow Resort 165cm (upper) 60cm (lower) Muikamachi Hakkaisan 160cm Naeba 120cm NASPA Ski Garden 110cm Yuzawa Kogen 140cm Yuzawa Nakazato 90cm Yuzawa Park 90cm Yuzawa Now 2015-2016 season Data as of Monday 22nd February 2016 Total snowfall at base so far 364cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 35 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 34cm (10th February) November 2015 snowfall 0cm December 2015 snowfall 92cm reported on 7 days January 2016 snowfall 143cm reported on 18 days February 2016 snowfall 129cm reported on 10 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 386cm Posted on Saturday 27th February 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Yuzawa. Yesterday started off with those clear blue skies but by late morning mostly thin cloud had covered lots of the sky and it was even snowing lightly in a few higher areas and down to town for a short while as well. It didn't amount to much though. I think I heard the sprinklers overnight as well but there's just a dusting down here in town since yesterday... just about give it 1cm. Kagura are this morning saying that there's 2-5cm of fresh snow on their slopes with Maiko Snow Resort reporting 3cm of fresh. So just a bit. This morning it's another bright start. There's a bit more of a hazy feel to the blue skies this morning and it does look like it's going to be a very mild day again - perhaps temperatures rising to around +6 degrees at town level. There may be some slight snowfall tonight again but don't expect anything significant. Tomorrow is likely to be more cloudy than today but temperatures are forecast to be around the same. Later in the day on Monday is still looking good -- on the forecast anyway. Once we get into Wednesday though expect a spell of sunny skies and warmer conditions. --- Resort official snow depths (Saturday 27th February 2016) and any specific news at time of writing: Resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa 180cm Ishiuchi Maruyama 140cm Iwappara 130cm Joetsu Kokusai 180cm Kagura 160cm (Mitsumata) 190cm (Tashiro) 220cm (Kagura) Kandatsu Kogen 130-155cm Maiko Snow Resort 170cm (upper) 60cm (lower) Muikamachi Hakkaisan 160cm Naeba 130cm NASPA Ski Garden 115cm Yuzawa Kogen 150cm Yuzawa Nakazato 95cm Yuzawa Park 90cm Yuzawa Now 2015-2016 season Data as of Saturday 27th February 2016 Total snowfall at base so far 386cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 39 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 34cm (10th February) November 2015 snowfall 0cm December 2015 snowfall 92cm reported on 7 days January 2016 snowfall 143cm reported on 18 days February 2016 snowfall 151cm reported on 14 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this season 373cm Posted on Wednesday 24th February 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . It started raining yesterday evening and was still raining last time I was outside at 10:30am, but the very good news is that this morning we have woken to some fresh snow on the ground. Hurray! Early on Kagura are reporting 10cm, while Maiko Snow Resort report 5-10cm... and I have just measured 9cm outside my place at town level at 8:30am. Better still is that it is still snowing now as I write the report. We can probably expect it to ease off sometime around lunchtime, so we just want as much as possible to fall before then (of course). Next up after today in terms of snowfall (or more than potential very light snow) looks like it should be Friday and then later in the weekend as well. Let's see if we can have a good end to the month of February and start to March. --- Resort official snow depths (Wednesday 24th February 2016) and any specific news at time of writing: Resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa 170cm Ishiuchi Maruyama 120cm Iwappara 130cm Joetsu Kokusai 160cm Kagura 160cm (Mitsumata) 190cm (Tashiro) 220cm (Kagura) Kandatsu Kogen 120-140cm Maiko Snow Resort 170cm (upper) 60cm (lower) Muikamachi Hakkaisan 160cm Naeba 120cm NASPA Ski Garden 115cm Yuzawa Kogen 140cm Yuzawa Nakazato 90cm Yuzawa Park 85cm Yuzawa Now 2015-2016 season Data as of Wednesday 24th February 2016 Total snowfall at base so far 373cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 36 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 34cm (10th February) November 2015 snowfall 0cm December 2015 snowfall 92cm reported on 7 days January 2016 snowfall 143cm reported on 18 days February 2016 snowfall 138cm reported on 11 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. - Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 1st March 2016
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 22cm Snowfall at base this season 408cm Posted on Tuesday 1st March 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Yuzawa. And this is the kind of report I like writing... This morning Kagura are reporting an impressive 40-50cm of fresh snow since yesterday and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 30+cm on their slopes. Here in town outside my place I have measured 22cm of lovely snow on the ground. That's more like it, great to see a decent amount of snow. This is what we are used to here! It started off raining quite a lot yesterday but turned into snowfall and by evening there was a layer of snow on the ground with more joining it overnight. Snow is forecast for the day today and also hopefully into tomorrow as well, though perhaps just light snow rather than heavy. Actually just at the moment the snow has stopped falling and it's fairly bright. Hopefully that is just a temporary break rather than a clear up. So this morning conditions should be great and definitely one to make the most of. Strong winds seem to be affecting operations at Kagura with only the Mitsumata area open this morning with the chance of parts of Kagura opening depending on conditions. (That means that there'll be lots of untouched up there on the main Kagura areas tomorrow). Once these snow clouds clear up, I'm afraid there isn't much more snow to be seen on the 6-day forecast. Rather it looks like it's going to really warm up by the weekend. Let's deal with that nearer the time. For now though, a very good morning! --- Resort official snow depths (Tuesday 1st March 2016) and any specific news at time of writing: Some numbers have not yet been updated as the report went online Resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa 160cm Ishiuchi Maruyama 130cm Iwappara 110cm Joetsu Kokusai 160cm Kagura 160cm (Mitsumata) 190cm (Tashiro) 220cm (Kagura) Kandatsu Kogen 115-145cm Maiko Snow Resort 155cm (upper) 50cm (lower) Muikamachi Hakkaisan 180cm Naeba 130cm NASPA Ski Garden 105cm Yuzawa Kogen 150cm Yuzawa Nakazato 80cm Yuzawa Park 80cm Yuzawa Now 2015-2016 season Data as of Tuesday 1st March 2016 Total snowfall at base so far 408cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 40 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 34cm (10th February) November 2015 snowfall 0cm December 2015 snowfall 92cm reported on 7 days January 2016 snowfall 143cm reported on 18 days February 2016 snowfall 151cm reported on 14 days March 2016 snowfall 22cm reported on 1 day Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. - Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 2nd March 2016
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 7cm Snowfall at base this season 415cm Posted on Wednesday 2nd March 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Yesterday it was great to see a return to a proper winter-like day and that good-to-great new layer of snow on the ground which really gave the resorts a good refresh. It snowed for lots of yesterday, though wasn't particularly heavy for the most part and this morning there's another 7cm to add to what I observed yesterday morning. Light snow is falling at the moment and that's what we have forecast for this morning until sometime later on this afternoon or this evening. It should keep quite cold as well, so today should also be a great day to be out on the skis or board. As so often been the case this season though, annoyingly it looks like things are going to warm up from tomorrow. More worrying than there not being any snow on the weekly forecast are the warm temperatures due over the weekend... double digit temperatures are likely at town level, so it's very probably going to be another spring-like weekend. We can just hope that temperatures keep on the lower side of things to help protect the snow that we have... If you can get out onto the snow today or tomorrow even, rather than the weekend, it should be really good. And you'll have less people to share the snow with as well. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 419cm Posted on Saturday 19th March 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Morning from Yuzawa. I heard a bit of rain falling on the roof late last night and it was drizzly earlier on but right now it's just cloudy - the rain clouds currently seem to be doing their thing just to the north of us, hopefully they may stay there! The forecast though does warm of rain on and off for the day At 9am this morning it is 9 degrees but it's not forecast to warm up much more than that. Tomorrow there's a still a chance of light rain at times according to the local forecast, though less than today. We might be lucky to avoid it completely. It will not be as warm as well with temperatures generally dipping from tomorrow. Resorts are playing around with snow on lower areas to try and keep things going especially for this weekend - it's a 3-day weekend with Monday being a national holiday. I don't have any official news yet, but I would imagine after that we'll be hearing about some places closing next week. Higher up there's still plenty of snow to play in and those resorts will be open for quite a while yet of course. It will be interesting to see how long they can last this season, for example Kagura plans to go right through until the end of May (and in a normal season usually is able to). --- Resort official snow depths (Saturday 19th March 2016) and any specific news at time of writing: There are now lots of patches of ground on view showing through now on some lower slopes around town. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Yuzawa where the day starts off just cloudy, and that is what the forecast is for much of the day really with a high of around 4C expected. The day is starting off fairly chilly though, currently around 0C. Yesterday soon after my report went up it was snowing properly and it was good to see it coming down. Not as much as we would have liked though with just a few cm on the ground around town and hopefully a bit more than that higher up. I notice this morning that Kagura are reporting 1-2cm of fresh, with both Naeba and Maiko Snow Resort reporting 5cm. There's the chance of occasional snow here and there still on the forecast over the next few days, but if and when it does snow I wouldn't expect much more than light snow like yesterday. Local forecasts seem to be pointing towards a largely sunny day tomorrow in fact. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 424cm Posted on Friday 25th March 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . After the snow up high mentioned in my report yesterday, it's an even better one this morning. Snow falling yesterday for periods though it didn't really amount to anything at town level, but this morning I woke up to the sound of sprinklers and looked out of the window to see... 5cm of snow on the ground! That was a good surprise. And here's what the 'resorts that report' are reporting: Naeba: 30cm of fresh snowfall up top! Kagura: 20cm of fresh snowfall Maiko: 15cm of fresh snowfall Not bad at all! I think it's fair to say that all slopes will have got a layer of 10-30cm of fresh on them which is most welcome indeed. What's more, it's actually still snowing - though it's not really expected to continue beyond this morning. So yes, it is probably a very good morning to be heading up high and enjoy this late March snowfall. From tomorrow, we're expecting more in the way of sunshine and temperatures starting to gradually rise again. --- Naeba have announced that they will be open until Sunday 3rd April, which will be the last day of their season. - Yuzawa Now: Thursday 31st March 2016
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 424cm Posted on Thursday 31st March 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Yuzawa. It's another clear and light blue sky hazy kind of start to the day here. The sun is out, the pollen is flying, and after temperatures reaching as high as 19 degrees in the valley yesterday... the snow is melting pretty quickly. We actually got some rain last night though I don't think it lasted too long. It was coming down quite hard at one point though. So anyway, it's clear again this morning and it may not get quite as warm today. Warmer again tomorrow. And sunshine forecast for today, tomorrow and Saturday. Today is the last day of the season for the NASPA Ski Garden resort. Maiko Snow Resort have also announced that they will not be able to open on 9th/10th April as originally planned, so this coming Sunday (3rd April) will be the last day of their season. I'm not quite sure how the town level Yuzawa Park is able to remain open until now, but apparently they are. Official snow depth over there is 10cm but I suspect that it's 10cm less than that in most areas! Gambatte-imasu ne. --- Resort official snow depths (Thursday 31st March 2016) and any specific news at time of writing: Lower slopes around town now have little or no snow on them, though higher areas still enjoy good snow cover. Best to head high. Some of the below official snow depths seem a little... optimistic... with some surrounding areas at lower resorts closer to 0cm. Resorts in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma: GALA Yuzawa Central Area and part of North Area remain open. - Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 15th March 2016
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 419cm Posted on Tuesday 15th March 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Yesterday we ended up with (wet) snow falling on the mountains with both Kagura and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 5-10cm of fresh snow since yesterday. It has been more like a bit of slush around town really but good to hear of some fresh on the slopes. This morning we have been having more of that wet snow here - basically in lower areas it's raining/sleeting, and it's snowing higher up. There's also some wind this morning higher up that is affecting Kagura resort... all of Tashiro is closed this morning along with Kagura Number 4 and 5 lifts. All other resorts appear to be opening as planned this morning. Once the clouds start clearing up today - expected sometime afternoon - we're expecting things to start getting more spring like once again. Tomorrow and Thursday should see lots of sunshine and blue skies and warmer temperatures. Friday will be the warmest of the lot (up to around 12 degrees in town?), but a dip in temps again beyond that is due too. Unfortunately, rain is currently on the forecast for Saturday. Nighta operations at Maiko Snow Resort and Yuzawa Nakazato has now finished for the season. --- Resort official snow depths (Tuesday 15th March 2016) and any specific news at time of writing: After some very warm conditions recently, there are some patches of ground on view on some lower slopes around town now. Southern facing slopes are generally more affected. Some courses at resorts are closed due to the snow situation - best to check with the individual resorts for their up-to-date details. Snow cover is not a problem higher up. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . It's a bright morning but I almost can't tell if it's just hazy or overcast. Or maybe both! But the sun is out and it's a warm morning already. Yesterday I was driving along Route 17 near Ishiuchi and the temperature message board said... 20C! Similarly warm conditions are forecast for today along with these sunny conditions continuing. Maybe slightly less warm tomorrow, but still sunny. Yesterday was also the last day of the season for NASPA Ski Garden and (not surprisingly) Yuzawa Park as well. A few more resorts plan to continue on until the end of Sunday and then we will just be left with Kagura, GALA Yuzawa and Kandatsu Kogen. Rain is due sometime between later on Sunday and Monday and there's a good chance that it'll be rain up at Kagura as well. --- Resort official snow depths (Friday 1st April 2016): Lower slopes around town now have little or no snow on them, though higher areas still enjoy good snow cover.
