The latest Niseko Now report can be found here The snow and cold conditions continue here in Niseko, and there has been at least another 35cm of snowfall at base since my last report. Kind of disappointing that the official snow depth numbers don't reflect all this new snow, perhaps apart from Niseko Grand Hirafu - the others seem to be stalling at much lower numbers for some reason. But believe me, it is out there and lots of it. Yesterday was a fantastic day. What more can I say. More people have been turning up to come and enjoy what Niseko has to offer, though the peak season crowds aren't here quite yet. It was great to get out for nighta for the first time too. The snow is forecast to continue through today and into tomorrow, with things set to settle down from Tuesday. The only thing that is going to dampen things today is those strong winds. No stranger to our Niseko reports, but strong winds on the mountain today are affecting lift operations. Annupuri reporting winds up to 20m/s, Hirafu up to 15m/s. The top two lifts at Hanazono; Swinging Monkey and King Number 3 Triple at Niseko Grand Hirafu; Niseko Gondola at Niseko Village; Gondola and Jumbo Number 3 lifts at Niseko Annupuri... are all not moving at the time of writing. As ever with the weather, things can change. But windy conditions are forecast for the day. At Hirafu the Super Course opens today (super!), as well as the Furiko Course. At Utopia, Silver, Shirakaba, Merchen, Paradise, Junior, Challenge, Dynamic and Family courses are now open. Moiwa 500m: NW12m/s, -7C, 50cm of fresh and moderate development of snowdrifts. Coastal data: NW16m/s, 2.5m waves, 1006hPa. Intermittent & moderate snowfall is persisting due to the stagnating low-pressure system. Snowdrifts and cornices are developing above 1000m treeline and the snowpack is yet to stabilize. Small slides (though big enough to be buried and asphyxiated) are to be considered in steep slopes. The snow accumulation is still insufficient and it will take a bit more time to set the gates. Please refrain from ducking ANY ropes. One track left under a rope would lead many others to do the same and increase the chances of accidents. Ducking ropes is strongly prohibited by the Niseko Rules. Avalanche accidents mostly occur during or just after storms. Do not overestimate your knowledge and skills; stay humble towards the mountain and always think safety first. Be careful of bushes and stumps and pay attention to the ski patrol’s advices. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's another good morning from Hirafu as I have 30-35cm of new snow to report here in the village since yesterday. Colder still again this morning. It has been snowing in style over the last day and earlier on this morning the skies were clearer, but the snow clouds have moved back in and it is snowing again. The forecast is for continued snow through Monday and more snow coming up after that. It looks like our worries about snow are over. Loads of snow and the Niseko Gondola at Niseko Village resort is going for a late start because of that snow. (Next time, get up earlier!) Niseko Grand Hirafu peak snow depth officially hits 200cm this morning as they add 40cm to that number. I am not complaining. At the time of writing the Hanazono Number 3 top lift was closed due to stronger winds on upper areas. Nighta starts at Niseko Grand Hirafu, Niseko Village and Niseko Annupuri from today. At Grand Hirafu they will have the following lifts operating: Ace Family lift - until 8:30pm Ace Number 2 Center Four lift - until 8:20pm Hirafu Gondola - until 8:10pm Holiday Number 1 pair lift - until 8:30pm The King Number 3 triple lift will NOT be joining in the nighta fun this season, which is a shame. But still, nighta at Hirafu especially is very much worth it. I think anyone who comes here should really give it a go. Moiwa 500m: 70cm of fresh, heavy snowdrift development, -5C, NW12m/s, stormy. Coastal data: NNW19m/s, 2.3m waves and 1007hPa. Heavy snowfall has started since the low-pressure system passed and formed a typical winter weather pattern. Snowdrifts are heavily developing in leeward slopes above 800m. Cornice slopes are unstable and could easily slide under ski stimulation. Potential sliding layer: Dec 12th, which formed under rapid change in temperature. The bonding of snow in the new snowdrifts is very weak and slabs are likely to collapse easily. Most avalanche related accidents occur in slopes with heavily developed snowdrift, during or just after storms. The snow is excellent, however bushes and stumps are still present just under the surface. Be prudent. Ducking ropes is strictly prohibited and off-limits areas are not to be entered at anytime. Top chairlifts are yet to operate due to lack of snow, and gates won’t be ready anytime soon. Niseko resorts are concerned about your safety but are also ready to respect your freedom. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Snowing pretty much all day yesterday again, with the winds ever present and getting stronger especially later in the day. There's another 15-20cm of new snowfall here in Hirafu since my last report. It's not quite as cold this morning, hovering around 0C at the moment, but the strong winds are still with us. At the time of writing, it looks like a few lifts are being affected - including the King Number 3 triple and Swinging Monkey at Hirafu, the top quad at Hanazono, and the Gondola at Niseko Village. Lifts at Annupuri don't seem to be operating yet, though that may well just be that the information hasn't been updated. Anyway the situation may well change depending on the weather conditions of course. Clearer conditions seem likely tomorrow - we might even get to see the sun again sometime in the next few days. The isobars are spacing out but the wind remains strong in high altitude. Heavy snowdrifts have developed in leeward slopes above 800m due to last night’s severe storm. 50cm thick slides are to be highly considered in steep slopes under 800m altitude, as the newly & drastically formed snowdrift-slabs are yet to stabilize. Potential sliding layer Dec 14th. The slab is heavy due to the incoming warm air and even small avalanches can be highly destructive. The snowpack is still insufficient and the setting of gates will take a little while. Do not duck ropes to seek fresh lines. The wind calmed down and the snow is good. Beware of hitting trees. The resorts are concerned about your safety, please respect the Niseko Rules and the ski patrol’s instructions. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Around 5cm of new snow to report this morning, so better than the last few. Intermittent snow earlier on this morning but now the sun is out and we have increasingly blue skies over Niseko. All but 4 lifts (see below) are now operating at the four resort areas of the mountain, though a few are running at reduced speed early on due to wind - but it doesn't seem to be affecting things as a whole. Down here in the village area there hasn't been much of a wind to report at all actually, though it has picked up in the last hour or so - and the Niseko Village resort is reporting winds of up to 16m/s on upper elevations. Noticeably more people around this weekend as you would expect. Lots of overseas visitors arriving for the Christmas and New Year period. There will be lots of parties over the next week, that's for sure. It would be nice if Mr Santa brought us huge dumps of Niseko-branded powder snow, though some pesky forecasts seem to have his significant delivery scheduled more for later in the week. Other less pesky ones with more on Christmas Eve. I'll let you decide what to believe looking at the different forecasts! --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am:-5C, 8cm of fresh crystal snow since 4am. 800m data: -6C, 15cm of crystal snow, no snowdrift development. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNE11m/s, Kamui cape ENE5m/s, 3m waves and 1014hPa. Intermittent snowfall with northerly wind is continuing above 800m. Snowdrifts and cornices are developing and the avalanche risk is rising in leeward ridges, knolls and cornice slopes. Potential sliding layer: Dec 20th. Top chairs are scheduled to operate but gates will be closed due to lack of snow. Please respect the Rules and remain inbounds. Do not duck ropes, as it will make people follow your tracks and unnecessarily increase the chances of accidents to happen. The fresh snow in the trees is good but shallow. Beware of trees, crust lying under the fresh snow and icy wind-ripples. Accidents often occur during storms. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good, we are back to snow! Probably around 10cm or so by the end of the day yesterday, result being just over 15cm of snow waiting for me outside here in Hirafu this morning. Welcome, welcome. It's colder this morning as well, and the snow quality is good. It is coming down nicely as well as I write this report. Not good visibility out on the mountain though, but I'm glad to report less wind. Hirafu adding 20cm to their upper slopes snow depth this morning. Forecast seems to have changed for the better. Hopefully we will see the snow continue through tomorrow. Then it's looking good for decent snowfall at the end of the week. Perhaps clearer conditions for Christmas though. At least we'll be able to spot Santa sliding down the slopes. --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am: -5C, 15cm of crystal snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -7℃, 20cm of crystal snow. Annupuri 1000m: -9℃, 20cm of crystal snowfall, 50cm snowdrift development. No drastic development of snowdrifts can be observed above 800m, wind is blowing at 10m/s NNE. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW13m/s, Kamui cape N4m/, 2.2m waves and 1017hPa. The general avalanche risk is low, but moderate to considerable in knoll terrains around 1000m altitude. Top chairs are scheduled to operate and the groomers conditions are excellent. Gate 6 is scheduled to open today, but routes are still limited and bushes are thick. The creeks are still yet to be fully buried, better head back early towards the course. Other gates will also start opening. Ask the ski patrol’s advice and ride carefully. Always remember that the area outside the gates is outside the resort’s management. Safety is never guaranteed in winter mountains, be responsible of your own actions. Are you prepared for emergencies? Carrying avalanche gears (transceiver, shovel & probe) may not be mandatory, but strongly recommended. Being trained and comfortable on how to use these gears is as important as carrying them. Better not overestimate technology, skills or knowledge; always be prudent and stay humble towards the mountains. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It was indeed a mild day yesterday in the region, warm enough for us to actually get a bit of rain. Happily, that didn't last long and it's colder again this morning and I have a few more cm of snow to report. As in the report below, up to 15cm being reported around the mountains. Still a wind this morning but less and it's not affecting lifts by the looks, though a few including the Hirafu Gondola may be slightly late starting up - reasons being maintenance checks and moving snow and ice. Snow is falling at the moment and we should keep cold and see regular snowfall through the week right up to the weekend. --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am: -6C, 15cm of low pressure snowfall in last 12 hrs. Moiwa 800m: -8C, wind NW 12m/s, 10cm. Annupuri 1150m: -12C, wind W18m/s, 10cm new snow, no significant snowdrift development. Hirafu 1000m: -11C, 15cm new snow, strong wind. Annupuri peak 1308m: -11.1℃, wind WSW5.7m/s. Cape Benkei: NW16m/s, Cape Kamui: wind W13m/s, wave 2.4, pressure 1003hPa. Warm wet snowfall above Feb 2nd layer has recrystallised overnight from drop in temperature, around 1000m elev shallow surface avalanches are likely to occur on steep slopes. Below 800m the forest is reset and the snow is good. The overall avalanche risk is low but always aware. The is always the danger of avalanches from deep within the snowpack. Today there is a strong wind above 1100m, Patrol yet to decided gate openings. In Niseko it is becoming increasingly hard to find powder and many are following tracks under the ropes looking for it. Dont forget Niseko Rules exist to protect your freedom to ski outside the ropes. Always use the gates, never duck ropes. Be aware of a sudden change in weather. Note cracks are difficult to see from above. Groomers are good. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Yesterday was a great day. Beautiful blue skies, just a few clouds, calm. Lots of goods on offer as well due to the wind of the previous few days keeping lifts closed. Nice. Just a few cm of new snowfall to report this morning in Hirafu and a cold -11 degrees. After the clearness of yesterday, we are back to snow and limited visibility this morning and it is snowing again. It was actually much clearer just earlier on this morning, so it just shows how quickly conditions can and do change. Snowfall forecast for the next few days and it will remain cold. Wrap up well! --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am: -11C, Trace new snow crystals in last 12 hrs. Moiwa 800m: -13C, calm, no significant snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -16C, wind N10m/s. Hirafu 1000m: -16C, some snowdrift development, Northerly wind and snow. Annupuri peak 1308m: -17.4C, wind NNW11.1m/s. Cape Benkei: NNE10m/s, Cape Kamui: wind N7m/s, wave 0.8m, pressure 1008hPa. From this mornings observations shallow snowdrifts around 1000m East Ridge (HigashiOne) are likely to slide. There has been little snow in the last 12hrs and the surface is not reset, but snow is good. The avalanche risk will increase though the afternoon with the expected increase in wind and snow. 1-2nd Feb frost layer will become notable in snowpack, note the future snowfall transition. Avalanches often occur in windy and snowy conditions. Snow conditions change everyday, snowdrifts develop rapidly on leeward slopes in strong winds and can easily collapse high above you on the mountain. A slope that was good yesterday isn’t necessarily good today. Gate openings yet to be decided. Please follow the patrols advice. Enter the mountains with caution, a few small mistakes and overconfidence is the cause of many accidents. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here There's just a thin layer of new snowfall to report this morning. After the windy conditions of yesterday - it's somewhat calmer this morning, though still a moderate wind is affecting the top lifts at Niseko Grand Hirafu and Niseko Village as of mid morning. Earlier on this morning the sun was making an appearance and there was only a light wind, but it has clouded over and snow and windy conditions are forecast for the rest of the day. Having said that, it's a relatively mild day after it being really cold overnight. Should get colder again from tomorrow though and snow is lined up on the forecast for at least the first half of the week. --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am: -11, no new snow in last 12 hrs. Moiwa 800m: -12C, trace new snow, snow drift development eased. Annupuri 1150m: -11C, trace new snow. Hirafu 1000m: -11, 10cm new snow. Annupuri peak 1308m: -12.6C, wind WSW7.6m/s. Cape Benkei: SSE10m/s, Cape Kamui: wind calm, wave 1.1m, pressure 1013hPa. The strong winds for the last 2 days have dropped in the last 10 hrs and new snowdrifts are starting to stabilise. The overall avalanche risk is beginning to fall however around 1000m Kozen no sawa, Osawa, Higashione (east ridge) cornice slope, the risk of slabs fracturing continues. Also on south facing slopes below 850m the risk continues from Jan 28-29 layer. Peak gates are expected to open today. Please listen to the patrols advice before exiting the gates. The snow is good. The 2nd Feb layer is expected to become a notable layer in future snow pack due to surface frost. Pay attention to the snow conditions, heavily wind effected slopes are not good riding, take care falling. Dont traverse under cornices. Dont set off any avalanches. Switch on your beacon. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Just under 10cm of fresh snow this morning in the Hirafu village area. Light snow and cloudy/overcast earlier on this morning but the skies have been clearing and we seem to be on for a fine, sunny day. Can't say I was expecting that! The local forecast still has cloud for the day so it may well cloud over once again. For now though - lovely morning. Not much wind as well this morning with all resorts open as planned. And it's keeping cold too, so it should be a good morning to be out on the mountain. Back to snowy conditions tomorrow through Friday. --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am: -10C, 5cm of new snow in last 12 hrs. Moiwa 800m: Occassional northern flurries, Anbetsu side 30cm snowdrift growth. Annupuri 1150m: -13C, wind W8m/s, 10cm snowdrift growth. Hirafu 1000m: -12C, 10cm new snow, calm. Annupuri peak 1308m: -16.9C, wind NW10.3m/s. Cape Benkei: NW9m/s, Cape Kamui: wind N7m/s, wave 1.6m, pressure 1009hPa. The weather is calm at both sea and mountains and there is little noticeable snowdrift development. Avalanche risk is low. Peak gates are expected to open this morning. Yesterdays tracks are not covered but the snow is good. The ridge lines are hard and crusty, not good for riding. When traversing go one by one. Ride the fall line, dont keep traversing under the cornices. More cracks are appearing everyday, they release tension in the slope but do not necessarily cause an avalanche immediately. However on NW to NE (Goshiki Onsen side)slopes it is possible for a huge avalanche to be triggered deep within the snowpack at the same time the crack opens. Have a good day. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here And it's another cold morning in Niseko with 15cm or so of fresh snow down here in my Hirafu village base. I was told that it was clearer again earlier on this morning, but a bit of a late start for me today and now it is cloud and... yes, you guessed it... snowing, albeit lightly at the moment. Snow showers for the day seems to be the forecast. Saturday tomorrow of course and we might get some sunshine and a break from the snow clouds. It will remain cold though and we should be returning to snow on Sunday. It's never that far away mid season! It should be a good day. --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am: -10C, 15cm new snow crystals in last 12 hrs. Moiwa 800m: -14C,calm, cm snow, snowdrift development. Annupuri 150m: -18, calm. Hirafu 1000m: -13C, calm. Annupuri peak 1308m: -18.6C, wind WNW8.7m/s. Cape Benkei: wind NNW14m/s, Cape Kamui: wind W9m/s, wave 1.9m, pressure 1019hpa. The winter weather pattern has calmed and isobars moved apart and snow drifts are beginning to stabilise. From observation snow is stable under 800m and avalanche risk is begiining to fall, but Kozan no sawa 1100m, Osawa 1000m and HigashiOne cornice slope the risk continues. Peak gates are expected to open this morning, but please listen to the patrols advice before leaving. Outside the gate is not the ski area and everybody is responsible for themselves. Don't rest at the bottom of steep slopes, in gullies or on slopes under cornices. Dont traverse steep slope and trigger avalanche, there are many people on the mountain and can easily bury them below. Around 1000m there is the possibility to trigger slab avalanche by skier stimulation on Feb 6th layer due to delayed stabilisation from the cold weather. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Hirafu and I have another 25cm or so of fresh snow to report. Very nice snow too, conditions should be very good indeed this morning out on the mountain (where there will likely be even more of course). It's another very cold morning and I'm glad to say less wind. Yesterday wind make access limited at the resorts, but at the start of the day while we have a moderate wind blowing it does not seem to be affecting lift operations. Obviously that can change any time, but fingers crossed... So it's snowing - still! :) - but visibility is limited. It's that Sapporo Snow Festival time of the year, with many people visiting Niseko making the trip over to Sapporo to take a look at the very impressive snow sculptures and enjoy the festivities. It's well worth a look. --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am: -10C, 25cm new snow in last 12 hrs. Moiwa 800m: -14C, wind W15m/s, major snowdrift development, poor visibility. Annupuri 1150m: -18C, wind W16m/s, snowdrift development. Hirafu 1000m: -13C, 25cm new snow, snowdrift development. Annupuri peak 1308m: -18.1C, wind WNW7.7m/s. Cape Benkei, Cape Kamui: no data. Strong wind and heavy snow have entered the region and there has been major snowdrift development on leeward faces. Mikaeri Bowl, Osawa cornice slope, Kozen no sawa, HigashiOne cornice slope the avalanche risk is HIGH. Peak gates 2&3 will be closed. Others undecided, please follow the patrols instructions. From observation around 800m elev, new slab development on cornices and knolls is 120cm. There is possibility of 80cm surface slab fracture easily triggered from rider stimulation. Dont carelessly jump cornices or into steep slopes today. The snow in the trees is good. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Brrrr, it's very very cold this morning. And those of you reading this in Tokyo - or hearing about the forecast 'heavy' snowfall down there - might be thinking that we'd be getting masses more up here.... but actually, we've just got 5cm or so from yesterday and no more this morning. And instead of stormy snow clouds above Niseko right now.... it's clear, sunny and calm. It often happens like that. So yes the sun is out and it's going to be a fine day. Snow should be back with us tomorrow. Keep well wrapped up, the cold is going to continue. --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am: -15C, no new snow in last 12 hrs, clear, cold & surface frost. Moiwa 800m: -14C,calm, no snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -15C, calm, no new snow. Hirafu 1000m: -13℃, calm, no new snow. Annupuri peak 1308m: -16.7C, wind N4.3m/s. Cape Benkei: wind S4m/s, Cape Kamui: wind NE5m/s, wave 1.1m, pressure 1021hpa. A high pressure system has brought us a clear cold night and a surface frost has formed, which will become notable in future snow pack. Drifts formed over the last few days have stabilised and general avalanche risk is low. Peak gates are expected to open this morning. Please listen to the patrols advice before exiting the gates. While it is not enforced, it is recommended everyone wears a beacon and knows how to use it. The snow is good. Every year as technology improves your riding speed increases. Remember, if you hit a tree – the tree always wins. Take care drinking too much, a fall down the stairs can lead to a serious accident.
